[Enrichment of precooked white corn flour (Zea mays) with amaranth seed flour (Amaranthus sp.)].

Three mixtures of precooked white corn flour with 10, 20 and 30% amaranth flour were prepared. The sedimentation and consistency of the mixtures differed from those of the white corn flour, but without altering the capacity of dough formation to prepare arepas. The protein, fiber, and ash contents were higher than those of the precooked white corn flour.

Repartitioning effect of a mixed beta-agonist on body composition.

Subcutaneous administration of a mixed beta-agonist to young rats induced no changes in animal growth and food conversion efficiency. However, a repartitioning effect was found with increases in lean tissue and decreases in body fat. The enhancement of muscle protein deposition was attributed to a fall in protein breakdown as muscular cathepsin A activity was lower in treated rats.

Risk factors for necrotizing enterocolitis in infants weighing more than 2,000 grams at birth: a case-control study.

A retrospective case-control study of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) was conducted among infants weighing greater than 2,000 g at birth. Twenty-three infants met the NEC criteria for inclusion in the study; 12 weighed 2,001 to 2,500 g at birth and 11 weighed greater than 2,500 g at birth. Pineal region tumors, which comprise 0.4% to 1% of intracranial neoplasms, are classified into four groups: teratomas, pinealomas; glial forms; and cysts. Clinically, they produce hydrocephalus due to the obstruction of the cerebral duct; lesions of the vegetative centers of the hypothalamus; invasion of the quadrigeminal tubercles, producing a symptomatology which varies according to the region affected and occasionally, precocious puberty and diabetes insipidus.
