Amplification and mRNA expression of the erbB-2 gene was analyzed in 61 samples of primary human breast carcinoma. In the 57 samples where RNA could be isolated four different expression level groups were identified. Comparison of hybridization signal with that for beta-actin revealed that erbB-2 mRNA could not be detected in 6 of 57 samples (11%), was detected at normal levels in 32 of 57 samples (56%), showed 4- to 8-fold overexpression in 8 of 57 samples (14%), and showed 16- to 128-fold overexpression in 11 of 57 samples (19%).

These processes suggest that the administration of an antiestrogen might alter the rate of hepatic regeneration. To examine this question, male Wistar rats were treated with tamoxifen (0.

In particular, the microsomal content of specific enzymes and the synthesis of specific proteins are under sex steroid hormone control. Because the liver of male rats is strikingly androgen responsive, we sought evidence for an androgen receptor in this tissue.

This self phosphorylation occurred in the absence of EGF or other growth factors. High concentrations of solutes did not activate phosphorylation of either isolated EGF receptor or EGF receptor solubilized by non-ionic detergents.

These results suggest that both striata subserve this response. The present experiment further assessed this possibility by determining the effects of unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine lesions of the mesotelencephalic dopamine system on conditioned circling.

Facial nerve paralysis is the most common mononeuropathy and idiopathic facial paralysis (Bell's palsy) the most common seventh nerve disease electromyographers may be asked to evaluate. The electrophysiologic method of choice to assess the facial nerve is side-to-side evoked amplitude comparison with the affected side expressed as a percentage of the nonaffected side. This examination should be performed on days 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13 after onset of paralysis.

We examined this pathway to determine more precisely the distribution pattern of fibers and the laminar arrangement of axon terminals in the motor cortex. The recently developed technique of PHA-L staining enabled us to label anterogradely the axons that form this projection.

Its aetiology and prevalence have not been established but associating problems underscore the importance of early identification and treatment. Theories about aetiology relate to minimal brain damage, heredity, temperament variations, maturational lag, dysfunction of the reticular activating system, food sensitivity, and learned response to unorganized environment.

In the present study the effect of the antiandrogen flutamide on liver regeneration was assessed. Adult male Wistar rats were treated with flutamide (2 mg/rat/day or 5 mg/rat/day subcutaneously) or vehicle for 3 days prior to and daily after partial hepatectomy.

Normally, these axons are eliminated by the end of the third postnatal week. However, if a portion of fetal occipital cortex is transplanted to the parietofrontal region in newborn hosts then some neurons in the transplant will extend pyramidal tract axons and maintain them.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA long-lasting increase in the efficiency of synaptic transmission in the central nervous system has been thought to be one of the bases of learning and memory. To explore the possibility that the motor cortex (area 4 gamma) itself is involved in motor learning, the existence of long-term potentiation (LTP) was examined by recording excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) from motor cortical neurons. Short tetanic intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of the somatic sensory cortex produced a marked potentiation of the EPSPs in a small group of motor cortical neurons.

One group served as an unoperated control (C), and the others were subjected to the following lesions: bilateral SI-bilateral SII; bilateral SI; bilateral SI-contralateral SII; bilateral SII-bilateral posterior parietal; bilateral parietal lobectomy; and contralateral parietal lobectomy. The groups were then tested again on the same tasks.

Specific hormone binding to cytosol and nuclei from normal liver containing such receptors is of high affinity, low capacity, saturable, and specific for steroidal and nonsteroidal estrogens. Although estrogens alter metabolism and may produce disease, little data is available concerning estrogen receptor levels found in diseased liver.

All patients received combination chemotherapy consisting of cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, and vincristine (CAV) with or without methotrexate, etoposide, and/or hexamethylmelamine. Thoracic and/or prophylactic cranial irradiation was administered to 159 (42 percent) and 192 (51 percent) patients, respectively.

The concept of high-dose induction therapy for extensive-stage patients has been explained in a series of pilot studies. Patients with chronic gastrointestinal bleeding with no source found after standard radiographic and endoscopic procedures are diagnostic challenges. Since angiodysplasia is a frequent cause of such bleeding, selective angiography has become an essential diagnostic tool in identifying arteriovenous malformations (AVM) of the large and small bowel. In addition to preoperative identification, some method of intraoperative localization is essential to assure removal of the involved segment.

Eighteen patients (20%) achieved major responses to therapy (three complete responders and 15 partial responders). Response rates were similar in each histologic subtype.
