Aplasia Cutis Congenita Associated with Fetus Papyraceus.

Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC), or congenital absence of skin, is a heterogeneous condition that may be due to varied mechanisms. ACC has rarely been reported in association with fetus papyraceus, representing a peculiar phenotype of ACC. We present six new cases of neonates born with symmetric ACC associated with intrauterine fetal demise of co-twins during the late first or early second trimester.

Effect of L-arginine on leukocyte adhesion in ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Nitric oxide has been reported to be beneficial in preserving muscle viability following ischemia-reperfusion injury. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of nitric oxide via L-arginine on leukocyte adhesion following ischemia-reperfusion injury. Intravital videomicroscopy of rat gracilis muscle was used to quantify changes in leukocyte adherence.

Plasma glucose and insulin responses to carbohydrate food (rice) with different thermal processing.

The effects of thermal processing on plasma glucose and insulin responses in healthy subjects were examined. Fourteen volunteers, after being tested with a glucose load, were randomly administered a test meal, consisting of an amount of rice, calculated to yield the same quantity of glucose, used for the glucose tolerance test (70 g). Rice (90 g, raw) was cooked in two different manners: (a) boiled in salted water and (b) baked for 10 min at 160 degrees C after boiling as in the first test.
