Medical laboratories in France have always adapted to technical and medical progress, as well as to the regulations imposed by the supervisory authorities. However, over the last ten years, this evolution has been so important that biologists are witnessing a revolution in their mode of practice. The supervisory authorities wanted to increase and harmonize the quality of laboratory results.

The proposed THESEUS mission will vastly expand the capabilities to monitor the high-energy sky. It will specifically exploit large samples of gamma-ray bursts to probe the early universe back to the first generation of stars, and to advance multi-messenger astrophysics by detecting and localizing the counterparts of gravitational waves and cosmic neutrino sources. The combination and coordination of these activities with multi-wavelength, multi-messenger facilities expected to be operating in the 2030s will open new avenues of exploration in many areas of astrophysics, cosmology and fundamental physics, thus adding considerable strength to the overall scientific impact of THESEUS and these facilities.

Since the publication of the ordinance of January 13th 2010, ratified by the law of May 30th 2013, medical biology in France has undergone a massive restructuration with the emergence of groups of several hundred laboratories. This evolution, which leads to a considerable reduction in the number of structures, causes numerous problems related to increased industrialization and financialization, difficulties of accreditation and disappearance of the proximity link between the biologist and the prescriber or the patient. It also leads to a clear disaffection of students, especially medical students, for this specialty whose medical character has been clearly affirmed by the law.

Melatonin is an endogenous pleiotropic molecule which orchestrates regulatory functions and protective capacity against age-related ailments. The increase in circulating levels of melatonin through dietary supplements intensifies its health benefits. Investigations in animal models have shown that melatonin protects against Alzheimer's disease (AD)-like pathology, although clinical studies have not been conclusive.

Brain inflammaging is increasingly considered as contributing to age-related cognitive loss and neurodegeneration. Despite intensive research in multiple models, no clinically effective pharmacological treatment has been found yet. Here, in the mouse model of brain senescence SAMP8, we tested the effects of proinsulin, a promising neuroprotective agent that was previously proven to be effective in mouse models of retinal neurodegeneration.

Cholesterol reduction at the neuronal plasma membrane has been related to age-dependent cognitive decline. We have used senescent-accelerated mice strain 8 (SAMP8), an animal model for aging, to examine the association between cholesterol loss and cognitive impairment and to test strategies to revert this process. We show that the hippocampus of SAMP8 mice presents reduced cholesterol levels and enhanced amount of its degrading enzyme Cyp46A1 (Cyp46) already at 6 months of age.

Senescence accelerated mice P8 (SAMP8) is a phenotypic model of age, characterized by deficits in memory and altered behaviour. Here, we determined the effect of age in SAMP8, and compared with the resistant strain, SAMR1, in behaviour and learning parameters linking these disturbances with oxidative stress environment. We found impairment in emotional behaviour with regard to fear and anxiety in young SAMP8 vs.

The amyloid precursor protein/presenilin 1 (APP/PS1) mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has provided robust neuropathological hallmarks of familial AD-like pattern at early ages, whereas senescence-accelerated mouse prone 8 (SAMP8) has a remarkable early senescence phenotype with pathological similarities to AD. The aim of this study was the investigation and characterization of cognitive and neuropathological AD markers in a novel mouse model that combines the characteristics of the APP/PS1 transgenic mouse model with a senescence-accelerated background of SAMP8 mice. Initially, significant differences were found regarding amyloid plaque formation and cognitive abnormalities.

The amyloid-β protein precursor/presenilin 1 (AβPP/PS1) mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has provided robust neuropathological hallmarks of familial AD-like pattern. AD is a neurodegenerative process that causes severe cognitive impairment; it is characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) and hyperphosphorylated tau forms and by oxidative and inflammatory processes in brain. Currently, efforts are made to understand biochemical pathways because there is no effective therapy for AD.

Most supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are accreting at very low levels and are difficult to distinguish from the galaxy centers where they reside. Our own Galaxy's SMBH provides an instructive exception, and we present a close-up view of its quiescent x-ray emission based on 3 megaseconds of Chandra observations. Although the x-ray emission is elongated and aligns well with a surrounding disk of massive stars, we can rule out a concentration of low-mass coronally active stars as the origin of the emission on the basis of the lack of predicted iron (Fe) Kα emission.

This review summarizes the effects of resveratrol in neurodegenerative diseases and speculates on the direction the field will take in the immediate future. In particular, we emphasize studies on the effects of resveratrol on new pathways related to neurodegenerative diseases such as inflammatory processes, mitochondrial biogenesis and its control through gamma coactivator 1-α (PGC1α), and the role of the tandem sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in neurodegeneration and in neurohormesis. While not all reported results are free from controversy, the demographic shift toward an older population makes compounds with this broad spectrum of potential clinical applications particularly interesting.

The role of peroxisome proliferator activator receptor (PPAR)β/δ in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease has only recently been explored through the use of PPARβ/δ agonists. Here we evaluated the effects of PPARβ/δ deficiency on the amyloidogenic pathway and tau hyperphosphorylation. PPARβ/δ-null mice showed cognitive impairment in the object recognition task, accompanied by enhanced DNA-binding activity of NF-κB in the cortex and increased expression of IL-6.

Resveratrol is a polyphenol that is mainly found in grapes and red wine and has been reported to be a caloric restriction (CR) mimetic driven by Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) activation. Resveratrol increases metabolic rate, insulin sensitivity, mitochondrial biogenesis and physical endurance, and reduces fat accumulation in mice. In addition, resveratrol may be a powerful agent to prevent age-associated neurodegeneration and to improve cognitive deficits in Alzheimer's disease (AD).

The senescence-accelerated prone 8 (SAMP8) mouse strain shows early cognitive loss that mimics the deterioration of learning and memory in the elderly and is widely used as an animal model of aging. SAMP8 mouse brain suffers oxidative stress, as well as tau- and amyloid-related pathology. Mitochondrial dysfunction and the subsequent increase in cellular oxidative stress are central to the aging processes of the organism.

The measurement of urine sialic acid (N Acetylneuraminic Acid: Neu5Ac) is useful for screening sialic acid storage disorders. We developed a new LC MS/MS method for the determination of a sialic acid. Urine samples were analyzed, after an HCl n-Butanol derivatization step, by a reverse phase based high-performance liquid chromatography method using 1,2,3-(13)C(3) N-Acetyl-D-neuraminic Acid ((13)C-Neu5Ac) as an internal standard.

Recent studies have implicated resveratrol and pterostilbene, a resveratrol derivative, in the protection against age-related diseases including Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the mechanism for the favorable effects of resveratrol in the brain remains unclear and information about direct cross-comparisons between these analogs is rare. As such, the purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of diet-achievable supplementation of resveratrol to that of pterostilbene at improving functional deficits and AD pathology in the SAMP8 mouse, a model of accelerated aging that is increasingly being validated as a model of sporadic and age-related AD.

To better understand the cellular mechanism of stress resistance to various pollutants (cadmium, pentachlorophenol), we undertook a survey of the Euglena gracilis transcriptome by mRNA differential display and cDNA cloning. We performed a real-time RT-PCR analysis upon four selected genes. One of them significantly changed its expression level in response to stress treatments: B25 gene was overexpressed in Cd-resistant cells whereas it was down-regulated in PCP-adapted cells.

We measured serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin concentrations on a bioMérieux Mini Vidas system in a pediatric population ranging in age from 1 to 19 years. Reference intervals were established separately for females and males, with stratification by age group and by Tanner's pubertal stage. FSH values were higher in females than in males, and were lowest in both sexes of age class 2 (4-8 years), increasing thereafter to the upper limit for stage PIV (females) and stage PV (males).
