Cardiovascular control is vulnerable to forced high sodium consumption during the per-inatal period, inducing programming effects, with anatomical and molecular changes at the kidney, brain, and vascular levels that increase basal and induce blood pressure. However, the program- ming effects of the natriophilia proper of the perinatal period on blood pressure control have not yet been elucidated. In order to evaluate this, we studied the effect of a sodium overload challenge (SO) on blood pressure response and kidney and brain gene expression in adult offspring exposed to voluntary hypertonic sodium consumption during the perinatal period (PM-NaCl group).

Sodium appetite is a motivational state involving homeostatic behavior, seeking the ingest of salty substances after sodium loss. There is a temporal dissociation between sodium depletion (SD) and the appearance of sodium appetite. However, the responsible mechanisms for this delay remain poorly elucidated.

The aim of the present study was to determine whether the TRPV1 channel is involved in the onset of sodium appetite. For this purpose, we used TRPV1-knockout mice to investigate sodium depletion-induced drinking at different times (2/24 h) after furosemide administration combined with a low sodium diet (FURO-LSD). In sodium depleted wild type and TRPV1 KO (SD-WT/SD-TPRV1-KO) mice, we also evaluated the participation of other sodium sensors, such as TPRV4, Na and angiotensin AT1-receptors (by RT-PCR), as well as investigating the pattern of neural activation shown by Fos immunoreactivity, in different nuclei involved in hydromineral regulation.

Angiotensin II (Ang II) acts on Ang II type 1 (AT1) receptors located in the organum vasculosum and subfornical organ (SFO) of the lamina terminalis as a main facilitatory mechanism of sodium appetite. The brain serotonin (5-HT) system with soma located in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) provides a main inhibitory mechanism. In the present study, we first investigated the existence of Ang II AT1 receptors in serotonergic DRN neurones.

Objectives: Despite significant numbers of Afghanistan and Iraqi veterans and service members who report symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, the majority do not seek help for these problems. A better understanding of the help-seeking process might aid providers and administrators in outreach and provision of services for those who need them. Past research has shown several variables that influence an individual's help-seeking behavior: demographic variables, the nature and severity of a mental health problem, and psychological variables.

Our aim was to analyze the participation of inhibitory and stimulatory signals in the temporal dissociation between sodium depletion (SD) induced by peritoneal dialysis (PD) and the appearance of sodium appetite (SA), particularly 2h after PD, when the rats are hypovolemic/natremic but SA is not evident. We investigated the effects of bilateral injections of the serotonin (5-HT) receptor antagonist, methysergide, into the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN) on hypertonic NaCl and water intake 2h vs. 24h after PD.

Veteran activity levels may decrease between Active Duty and postdeployment. We examined attitudes and changes in self-reported activities between the two in Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom (OIF/OEF) veterans using Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) services. We conducted an online cross-sectional survey (June-August 2008) of postdeployment OIF/OEF veterans registered with the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Objectives: Depression and anxiety are associated with significantly increased healthcare costs that include costs of non-psychiatric medical care. PTSD has been found to be related to many negative health perceptions and outcomes (e.g.

We compared videoconferencing and face-to-face (FTF) assessments for veterans seeking a mental health evaluation for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS) interview was used in 20 male veterans. There were significant correlations (ranging from 0.
