Nowadays there is a growing interest worldwide in using bacteriophages for therapeutic purposes to combat antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains, driven by the increasing ineffectiveness of drugs against bacterial infections. Despite this fact, no novel commercially available therapeutic phage products have been developed in the last two decades, as it is extremely difficult to register them under the current legal regulations. This paper presents a description of the interaction between a bacteriophage manufacturer and a clinical institution, the specificity of which is the selection of bacteriophages not for an individual patient, but for the entire spectrum of bacteria circulating in the intensive care unit with continuous clinical and microbiological monitoring of efficacy.

We report the synthesis and comprehensive characterization of organic-inorganic hybrid salts formed by bis-cationic bis(2-(trimethylammonium)ethylene)perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid bisimide (PTCD) and Keggin-type [XWO] (X = Si, = 4; X = P, = 3) polyoxometalates. (PTCD)[PWO]·3DMSO·2HO () and (PTCD)[SiWO]·DMSO·2HO () were structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The cations in both structures exhibited infinite chainlike arrangements through π-π interactions, contrasting with the previously reported cation-anion stacking observed in naphthalene diimide derivatives.

We propose an approximate method to calculate ion partition functions in the context of the chemical-picture representation of plasmas as an interacting mixture of various ions and free electrons under the local-thermodynamic-equilibrium conditions. The method uses the superconfiguration approach and implies that the first-order corrections to the energies of excited electron configurations due to the electron-electron interaction may be replaced by a similar first-order correction to the energy of the basic configuration of an ion with the same number of bound electrons. The method enables one to significantly speed up the calculations and generally provides quite accurate results.

Biomaterial-mediated, spatially localized gene delivery is important for the development of cell-populated scaffolds used in tissue engineering.
