Shattering the Shield: Embracing Complexity in Undergraduate Medical Education.

Background: Multimorbidity and patient complexity are increasing, yet undergraduate medical education curricula remain dominated by single disease frameworks, where students are often shielded from exposure to this complexity. Why this shielding continues to occur is understandable; however, this may leave graduates feeling underprepared for real-world practice. This study aimed to explore medical students' experiences of encountering, managing and dealing with complexity and to provide informed recommendations for integrating complexity into clinical teaching.

Assessing law enforcement officer skills in Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) research: developing and implementing standardized scenarios.

This paper outlines the development of standardized scenarios used to assess the efficacy of Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training in a randomized, controlled trial. The objective was to create scenarios that accurately simulate mental health crisis situations for law enforcement officers, ensuring that each scenario tests specific CIT skills relevant to real-world encounters. Our process involved building an interdisciplinary team and drawing from the knowledge and experience of professionals in law enforcement, mental health, and performance arts to design a set of scenarios that are both realistic and challenging.

Acceptability of a Fresh Produce Intervention for Individuals With Serious Mental Illnesses.

Objective: To qualitatively evaluate the acceptability and end-user perspectives of a 3-component Fresh Produce and Healthy Eating intervention seeking to increase fruit and vegetable consumption among individuals with serious mental illnesses (SMI) in residential settings.

Methods: Twenty-seven interviews were conducted with housing residents with SMI, curriculum instructors, agency leadership, and mobile market staff. Interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis.

Support for a Weight-Inclusive Curriculum? Exploring Partner Perspectives and Influences on Nutrition Education in Vermont High Schools.

Background: The weight-normative approach to nutrition education dominates health education programming across the United States, despite evidence that this paradigm contributes to negative outcomes including weight cycling, bias and stigma, the development of disordered eating behaviors, and weight-based bullying.

Methods: This study investigates perspectives of 10 potential partners with interest in and potential to influence nutrition education. Through qualitative interviews and document analysis, researchers explored support for a weight-inclusive curriculum and factors that influence high school nutrition curricular content and implementation.

Developing decision support tools for high-risk women and healthcare providers to increase chemoprevention informed choice and uptake: A retrospective translational science case study.

Retrospective case studies are one approach to help identify processes underlying the translation of successful health interventions. This case study investigates the development of and (), decision support tools for breast cancer risk assessment, and risk-stratified prevention. Following a recently developed protocol for retrospective translational science case studies, we examined the career trajectory of Dr Katherine Crew as she expanded from basic science to interdisciplinary, patient-oriented research in oncology and began collaboration with Dr Rita Kukafka, a public health informatician focused on communicating risk.

The Glasgow experience: a model for GP out-of-hours teaching for year 3 medical students.

We present a model for delivering out-of-hours (OOH) teaching to year 3 medical students at Glasgow University. Clinical placement time in general practice for students is under unprecedented pressure, and scope to further increase placement capacity in daytime general practice is challenging. The OOH primary care setting is underutilized in Glasgow.

Qualitative Evaluation of Acceptability and Feasibility of a Behavioral Intervention to Reduce Violence Among Young Adults with Early Psychosis.

Young adults with early psychosis are at higher risk of violent behavior, but no studies have explored using CBT-based interventions to reduce violence in specialized early intervention services (EIS) settings. This study describes formative research about the acceptability and feasibility of the Psychological Intervention for Complex PTSD and Schizophrenia-Spectrum disorder (PICASSO) to reduce violence, using interviews with EIS participants and staff. Generated themes regarding acceptability included negative experiences of violence and the desire to control and minimize violence.

Barriers and Facilitators to Staff Recruitment and Retention for ACT Teams: Perspectives of Staff and Participants.

The behavioral health workforce has been experiencing deepening problems with recruitment and retention, particularly in publicly funded settings serving individuals with serious mental illnesses. This quality improvement project gathered Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) participant (service user) and provider perspectives on workforce challenges. The authors conducted 8 interviews with ACT participants and 9 focus groups with ACT current staff, team leaders, and former staff.

The transition into postgraduate medical training is complex, requiring an integration into the workplace, adjustment to new identities, and understanding of the social and organisational structure of healthcare. Studies suggest that social resources, including a sense of belonging, inclusivity from social groups, and having strong social identities can facilitate positive transitions. However, little is known about the role these resources play in junior doctors' transitions into the healthcare community.

A Group-Based, Six-Lesson Healthy Eating Curriculum for Individuals With Serious Mental Illnesses: Development and Implementation.

As part of an intervention tailored to individuals with serious mental illnesses in residential settings that aimed to increase dietary intake of fresh vegetables and fruits, we developed and implemented a nutrition and cooking curriculum. To develop the curriculum, we assembled a Workgroup that consisted of professionals from multiple fields. The Workgroup held weekly discussions before drafting what would become the Workbook.

Both naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions (NDBIs) and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) have been shown to support the language development of children with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and minimal speech. However, little research has addressed the impact of incorporating AAC systems within NDBIs. This systematic review was conducted to assess the relative impact of NDBI procedures with and without AAC on the language development of children on the autism spectrum with minimal speech.

An open pilot trial of a behavioural intervention to reduce violence by young adults with early psychosis receiving treatment in an early intervention services setting: A protocol.

Aims: Despite the public health impact of violence among young adults with psychosis, behavioural interventions to reduce the risk of engaging in violence remain rare. For young adults with early psychosis, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)-based psychotherapy has efficacy in reducing impairment and improving functioning. A scoping review of AAC interventions for children and young adults with simultaneous visual and motor impairments: Clinical and research Implications.

Individuals with multiple disabilities are among the most challenging to serve and AAC teams often lack direction in determining effective interventions. The purpose of this scoping review was to summarize the research evidence on AAC interventions for individuals with complex communication needs and simultaneous motor, and visual impairments as part of their multiple disabilities; to consider implications for practice; and to determine gaps and directions for future research. A total of 27 studies were identified and reviewed, involving 55 unique participants with multiple disabilities.

Comparing brief video interventions to reduce public and self-stigma: Randomized control trial.

Aim: Stigma is a major mental healthcare barrier. This study compares the efficacy of two types of brief video interventions, targeting public and self-stigma, in reducing public stigma towards people living with psychosis. We hypothesized both interventions would similarly reduce public stigma and outperform the control group.

Randomized Controlled Trial of a Brief Video Intervention to Reduce Self-Stigma of Mental Illness.

Self-stigma, a phenomenon wherein individuals internalize self-directed negative stereotypes about mental illness, is associated with negative outcomes related to recovery. This randomized controlled study assessed the efficacy of a brief social contact-based video intervention in reducing self-stigma in a large sample of individuals ages 18-35 endorsing an ongoing mental health condition. We hypothesized that the brief video would reduce self-stigma.

Control of Neuronal Survival and Development Using Conductive Diamond.

This study demonstrates the control of neuronal survival and development using nitrogen-doped ultrananocrystalline diamond (N-UNCD). We highlight the role of N-UNCD in regulating neuronal activity via near-infrared illumination, demonstrating the generation of stable photocurrents that enhance neuronal survival and neurite outgrowth and foster a more active, synchronized neuronal network. Whole transcriptome RNA sequencing reveals that diamond substrates improve cellular-substrate interaction by upregulating extracellular matrix and gap junction-related genes.

Addressing differential attainment between International Medical Graduates (IMGs) and their peers who hold UK Primary Medical Qualifications remains one of the most significant challenges facing postgraduate General Practice (GP) training. Enhanced Induction programme, such as the Scottish Trainee Enhanced Programme (STEP), is one tool designed to try and facilitate transition into training and reduce this inequity. The STEP course is attended by both the trainee and their educational supervisor, and aims to lay the foundations of a successful and supportive supervisory relationship.
