Several candidate genes, chosen from the renin- angiotensin system, were examined for their association with essential hypertension. The genes of the renin- angiotensin system (RAS) are good candidates for such an approach because this system is well known to be involved in the control of blood pressure. One of these candidate genes is the gene encoding for angiotensinogen (the most important gene of the RAS associated with essential hypertension in the most population, is the gene for angiotensin-converting enzyme- ACE).

In carotenoids the lowest energetic optical transition belonging to the pi-electron system is forbidden by symmetry, therefore the energetic position of the S(1) (2(1)A(g)) level can hardly be assessed by optical spectroscopy. We introduce a novel experimental approach: For molecules with pi-electron systems the transition C1s-->2p(pi*) from inner-atomic to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) appears in X-ray absorption near edge spectra (NEXAFS) as an intense, sharp peak a few eV below the carbon K-edge. Whereas the peak position reflects the energy of the first excited singlet state in relation to the ionization potential of the molecule, intensity and width of the transition depend on hybridization and bonding partners of the selected atom.

Thymo-adrenals reaction in pre-pubertal and pubertal Wistar rats in response to acute administration of calcitonin.

Pre- and post-pubertal Wistar rats were injected i.m. with a single dose equivalent to 1 UI of Calcitonin (Calsyn-50 Rorer, Swiss).

The investigations were carried out on 30 Wistar albino male rats. A group of animals received Levodpa (Nakom), another group received Methyldopa (Dopegyt). One and a half hour after administration, the phagocytic activity was measured using colloidal carbon.

[Allergic retinal vasculitis following the intramuscular administration of Moldamin].

[Difficulties in the treatment of secondary cataracts with the YAG-Nd laser].

The paper presents a clinical study performed about 402 patients with secondary cataract treated between 1989-1994 with YAG-Nd Laser capsulotomy in the University Eye Hospital from Tg. Mureş. We described the technique used, taking into consideration the recovery obtained, the early and belated complications and the secondary effects.

[Clinical and therapeutic considerations in pseudomyxoma peritonei].

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is an uncommon clinical entity, lacking a precisely defined etiopathogenesis. Its clinical features are not specific and diagnosis is difficult. We analysed 10 patients, all of them women, whom we had treated surgically in combination with intraperitoneal chemotherapy.

[Madelung's cervicodorsal adipose hypertrophy (the Launois-Bensaude syndrome)].

Based on an experience (that we believe may be very low in any Clinic) of three cases of cervicodorsal fatty hypertrophy (Launois-Bensaude syndrome) in one case with relapse of the disease, we performed complex anterior dissection of the region, with access of both vascular bundles of the neck and with subsequent surgical removal of the left hypertrophic maxillary salivary gland, followed in a second step (3 months after the primary operation) by the dissection of the dorsal fatty tumours. The aesthetic and functional results were excellent. In the postoperative step, the patient follows a radiation therapy at a dose for anti-inflammatory purpose and steroid therapy.

The authors analysed the main etiopathogenetic conditions and the clinical and evolutional profile of 1586 patients with heart failure (HF), admitted to the First Medical Clinic of Cluj-Napoca between 1990 and 1994. [Familial abdominal fibromatosis].

Two cases of abdominal fibromatosis are followed-up in two brothers patients development, each of them having a peculiar development. First of them underwent operation for a huge abdominal tumor with a retroperitoneal origin and intraperitoneal development which needed a complex partial resection with first jejunal loop enterectomy. The other patient had first surgery for fibrosarcoma of nuchal area and after that he underwent an operation for superior digestive haemorrhagia as a result of antral gastric fibroid tumor with transverse colic and mezocolic extension, which needed gastro-colectomy.

[Unilateral pseudotumoral exophthalmos in ethmoid-sphenoid-maxillary mucocele].

Here is shown that drawing blood for immunological tests represents an important stage that must be reached according to medical indications, in order to avoid errors, taking into account the large range of these tests. All along the report it is discussed the dividing of the immunological tests needed into usual ones, with a value of basis screening, and complementary tests, with a value of advanced screening and their detailing. With regards to the immunopathological substratum, it is always necessary that the immunological tests should be performed by medical staff specialized in this domain.

[Pharmaceutical preparations from plant products employed in stomatologic diseases].

Derivatization of prostaglandins and related compounds to (methoxime) alkyl ester alkyl ether derivatives for gas chromatographic analysis.

Rapid and convenient methods are described for the exhaustive derivatization of carbonyl, carboxyl and hydroxyl groups of prostaglandins and related compounds to methoxime, alkyl ester and alkyl ether compounds respectively. Optimal reaction conditions were established for each group. The reactions were carried out in polar aprotic solvents.
