Animal experimental models are ruled out by respecting the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement) rules which governed the experimental research for decades with an increased tendency to minimize as much as it is possible any pain suffering or distress that the animals might feel. The chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) model is an alternative to other experimental models due to its superior properties compared to other animal models. The CAM is painless by itself due to the lack of innervation and has no immune cells till the 11th day of incubation.

Article Synopsis
  • - DGBI, including IBS, affects a large portion of the population, and while lactose intolerance is common in adults, self-reported symptoms often exaggerate the problem, affecting dietary choices and overall quality of life.
  • - A systematic review analyzed six studies involving 845 participants, highlighting that self-reported lactose intolerance has variable and only moderate accuracy compared to objective testing methods like hydrogen breath tests, leading to confusion in diagnosis.
  • - The review emphasizes the need for objective diagnostic tools and points out that lactose-free diets should not be universally recommended for IBS patients without clear evidence of lactose intolerance.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia globally. High-power, short-duration radiofrequency (RF) catheter ablation (CA) for AF has recently emerged, reducing ablation times and enhancing patient tolerability with comparable efficacy and safety. While the benefits of general anesthesia (GA) for standard-power, standard-duration CA are well-established, data comparing GA to mild conscious sedation (MCS) for high-power, short-duration CA are limited.

(1) Objectives: Assessment of novel impedance parameters such as the post-reflux swallow-induced peristaltic wave (PSPW) index and mean nocturnal baseline impedance (MNBI) have been proposed to enhance the accuracy of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) diagnosis. We aimed to evaluate the clinical value of MNBI and the PSPW index in discerning different phenotypes of GERD in children. (2) Methods: We conducted a prospective, observational study that included 49 children aged 5-18 years, referred for MII-pH monitoring due to negative endoscopy and persisting gastroesophageal reflux symptoms despite acid-suppressant treatment.

The cardiovascular continuum describes how several cardiovascular risk factors contribute to the development of atherothrombosis, ischemic heart disease, and peripheral arteriopathy, leading to cardiac and renal failure and ultimately death. Due to its multiple valences, the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system plays an important role in all stages of the cardiovascular continuum, starting from a cluster of cardiovascular risk factors, and continuing with the development of atherosclerosis thorough various mechanisms, and culminating with heart failure. Therefore, this article aims to analyze how certain components of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (converting enzymes, angiotensin, angiotensin receptors, and aldosterone) are involved in the underlying pathophysiology of the cardiovascular continuum and the possible arrest of its progression.

Background: Despite the availability of current antibiotic and surgical treatment options, infective endocarditis (IE) remains associated with a high mortality rate. Even though two-dimensional (2D) transesophageal echocardiography (TOE) is a major criteria in the diagnosis of IE, it is constrained by the single-plane orientation. Since three-dimensional (3D) TOE provides a comprehensive understanding of the cardiac architecture by allowing for a realistic visualization of the underlying structures in 3D space, it has attracted considerable interest in recent years.
