Call-center-based telephone triage is an example of a complex sociotechnical system relying on successful interactions between patients, callers, and the integration of many digital technologies. Digital technologies such as computer decision support systems are used to standardize triage outcomes with little consideration of how these unique healthcare systems adapt to maintain functionality in response to real-world operating challenges. Using structured observations of call handlers in two call centers and guided by usability heuristics and the concept of 'workarounds', this paper aims to investigate the effects of technology design on workflow and system adaptations.

Gamma Knife Radiosurgery for Meningioma.

Since its first reported use in 1976 in Sweden, Gamma Knife (GK) radiosurgery has become an accepted treatment option for intracranial meningioma, either upfront, in combination with planned subtotal resection, or as adjuvant/salvage treatment. Initially, GK was used in patients unfit for a major surgical procedure or for high-risk meningiomas adjacent to critical neurovascular structures. However, with the availability of larger and increasingly long-term follow-up studies, the proven durability of GK in the treatment of meningiomas means that it has become a treatment option for younger patients who want to avoid the risks of open surgery.

Investigation of UK Farmer Go/No-Go Decisions in Response to Tractor-Based Risk Scenarios.

In order to change behaviors and attitudes toward safety, it is important to understand how farmers approach different types of risk relevant to tractor use.

Predictors of Attitudes Toward Non-Technical Skills in Farming.

Objectives: Farming is a high-risk sector with up to 170,000 worldwide fatalities reported per year; it is therefore vital to identify methods of mitigating the dangers of this industry. Research within high-risk industries, such as aviation, shipping, and agriculture, has identified the importance of non-technical skills (NTS) in maintaining effective, safe performance and reducing error and injury. However, there is a lack of research evaluating factors that may contribute to NTS attitudes and behaviors.

Nurse-led rapid access vascular examination clinic triage reduces inappropriate referrals for peripheral arterial disease.

Introduction: Peripheral arterial disease causing intermittent claudication (IC) causes decreased quality of life and significant morbidity. We hypothesized that triage of patients referred with suspected IC at a nurse-led rapid access vascular examination (RAVE) clinic would identify those patients requiring vascular surgery assessment.

Comparison of CW Doppler ultrasound spectra with the spectra derived from a flow visualization model.

The methods and results of a study to determine the accuracy of continuous wave (CW) Doppler spectral recordings by comparison to the spectra derived from the flow profiles photographed simultaneously in a pulsatile flow visualization model are reported in this paper. A pulsatile pump produced a flow velocity waveform, similar to that seen in the human femoral artery, in a quartz glass tube. The velocity profiles, which were made visible by using a photochromic dye/laser technique, were photographed, and at the same time the instantaneous Doppler spectra were recorded.
