Objectives: Motivational Interviewing (MI), a client-centered approach that seeks to evoke and resolve ambivalence, and health education (HE), which provides health information and advice, may both provide some benefit to unmotivated smokers. In HE, it is possible that client language reflective of new learning, or "learning talk" (LT), and rejection of health advice, or "rejection talk," (RT), may uniquely reflect intent of subsequent behavior change.

Methods: This project utilized MI and HE sessions from two randomized clinical trials (RCTs), one in a low-income, diverse community civilian sample of 255 unmotivated smokers, and the other in a sample of Veterans with mental illness who were unmotivated smokers (n = 55).

Previous research has shown that informal caregiver burden can have deleterious effects on patient recovery; however, this relationship has yet to be investigated in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. This study aimed to examine the impact of the change of caregiver burden from pre- to post-surgery on patients' mental and physical health after CABG surgery. Ninety patient-caregiver dyads were assessed one month before the surgery, two months and one year after the surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • PAR1 is a key receptor linking blood coagulation and obesity-related liver issues, with specific mutations affecting its signaling pathways in mice.
  • High-fat diet experiments on different mice strains revealed that while the R41Q mutation reduced liver fat, the R46Q mutation increased liver weight and fat, showing mutations influence liver health differently.
  • Treatment with the PAR1 modulator NRD-21 demonstrated benefits by reducing inflammation and liver fat while improving insulin resistance, highlighting potential therapeutic targets for metabolic diseases linked to obesity.

Objective: Posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) can have detrimental influences on both individual and couple functioning, including how individuals respond to stressors and regulate emotions. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) can serve as a key indicator of emotion regulation; however, few studies have examined psychophysiological stress reactions within a couple's context.

Method: Forty-three couples ( = 86 individuals) with a trauma history were assessed for PTSS and RSA at baseline.

Importance: Current treatments for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis slow the rate of lung function decline, but may be associated with adverse events that affect medication adherence. In phase 2 trials, pamrevlumab (a fully human monoclonal antibody that binds to and inhibits connective tissue growth factor activity) attenuated the progression of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis without substantial adverse events.

Objective: To assess the efficacy and safety of pamrevlumab for patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Article Synopsis
  • Osimertinib targets and inhibits the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in cancer cells, leading to cell death and reduced tumors, making it a key treatment for EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
  • The ADAURA study compared the effects of osimertinib to a placebo in patients with surgically removed early-stage (IB-IIIA) EGFR-mutated NSCLC, showing that those on osimertinib had longer disease-free survival.
  • Recent results reveal that osimertinib significantly improves overall survival, with a 51% lower risk of death for patients treated with it compared to the placebo group.

Article Synopsis
  • Acetaminophen (APAP) overdose is a major cause of acute liver failure (ALF), and neutrophil activation may worsen outcomes by enhancing coagulation, but their exact role in liver injury is unclear.
  • A study used a strategy to deplete neutrophils in mice to investigate their involvement in liver damage after APAP exposure at different doses (300 or 600 mg/kg).
  • Results showed that neutrophil depletion reduced liver necrosis in mice exposed to higher APAP doses and suggested that neutrophils contribute to liver injury through interactions with platelets, particularly in cases of severe overdose.

Acute liver injury (ALI), that is, the development of reduced liver function in patients without preexisting liver disease, can result from a wide range of causes, such as viral or bacterial infection, autoimmune disease, or adverse reaction to prescription and over-the-counter medications. ALI patients present with a complex coagulopathy, characterized by both hypercoagulable and hypocoagulable features. Similarly, ALI patients display a profound dysregulation of the fibrinolytic system with the vast majority of patients presenting with a hypofibrinolytic phenotype.

Background: Activation of coagulation and fibrin deposition in the regenerating liver appears to promote adequate liver regeneration in mice. In humans, perioperative hepatic fibrin deposition is reduced in patients who develop liver dysfunction after partial hepatectomy (PHx), but the mechanism underlying reduced fibrin deposition in these patients is unclear.

Methods And Results: Hepatic deposition of cross-linked (ie, stabilized) fibrin was evident in livers of mice after two-thirds PHx.

Cardiovascular disease and diabetes are leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Social inequalities in the distribution of these diseases across the population exist. The aim of the current study was to examine the additive effect of socioeconomic position and a known biological risk marker (C-reactive protein [CRP]) for future incident cardiometabolic disease.

Extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1 and 2 (ERK1/2) are dysregulated in many pervasive diseases. Recently, we discovered that ERK1/2 is oxidized by signal-generated hydrogen peroxide in various cell types. Since the putative sites of oxidation lie within or near ERK1/2's ligand-binding surfaces, we investigated how oxidation of ERK2 regulates interactions with the model substrates Sub-D and Sub-F.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a known inducer of inflammatory signaling which triggers generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cell death in responsive cells like THP-1 promonocytes and freshly isolated human monocytes. A key LPS-responsive metabolic pivot point is the 9 MDa mitochondrial pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC), which provides pyruvate dehydrogenase (E1), lipoamide-linked transacetylase (E2) and lipoamide dehydrogenase (E3) activities to produce acetyl-CoA from pyruvate. While phosphorylation-dependent decreases in PDC activity following LPS treatment or sepsis have been deeply investigated, redox-linked processes have received less attention.

One challenge for multisite clinical trials is ensuring that the conditions of an informative trial are incorporated into all aspects of trial planning and execution. The multicenter model can provide the potential for a more informative environment, but it can also place a trial at risk of becoming uninformative due to lack of rigor, quality control, or effective recruitment, resulting in premature discontinuation and/or non-publication. Key factors that support informativeness are having the right team and resources during study planning and implementation and adequate funding to support performance activities.

Background: Among patients with resected, epidermal growth factor receptor ()-mutated, stage IB to IIIA non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), adjuvant osimertinib therapy, with or without previous adjuvant chemotherapy, resulted in significantly longer disease-free survival than placebo in the ADAURA trial. We report the results of the planned final analysis of overall survival.

Methods: In this phase 3, double-blind trial, we randomly assigned eligible patients in a 1:1 ratio to receive osimertinib (80 mg once daily) or placebo until disease recurrence was observed, the trial regimen was completed (3 years), or a discontinuation criterion was met.

For a single species, human kinship organization is both remarkably diverse and strikingly organized. Kinship terminology is the structured vocabulary used to classify, refer to, and address relatives and family. Diversity in kinship terminology has been analyzed by anthropologists for over 150 years, although recurrent patterning across cultures remains incompletely explained.
