Context: The growing number of females entering the armed forces has led to an increase in the number of female Veterans with spinal cord injury and diseases (SCI/D) requiring mobility devices. Limited research exists that explores whether mobility devices meet their needs in terms of comfort, fit and design.

Objective: To characterize respondents with SCI/D who use mobility devices and determine if these devices are meeting their daily needs.

Inappropriate urinary tract infection diagnosis in patients with neurogenic bladder may result from ambiguous symptoms experienced by these patients and contributes to antibiotic overuse. Characterization of patient-reported signs and symptoms may help providers more appropriately diagnose urinary tract infections. A previous study collected signs and symptoms recorded in electronic medical records of patients with neurogenic bladder due to spinal cord injury/disorder, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson's disease with at least one urinary tract infection diagnosis between 2017-2018 at four medical centers.

  • A 3-year-old male rhesus macaque was brought to a veterinary clinic with chronic diarrhea, body swelling, dullness, and vomiting, which had escalated over a month prior to the visit.
  • Diagnostic tests revealed the presence of protozoa in the feces, confirming a co-infection of Blastocystosis and intestinal trichomoniasis, while cultures were negative for other pathogens.
  • Treatment involved a combination of antibiotics, supportive therapies including iron and vitamins, and medications for vomiting; the monkey showed improvement in symptoms after 7 days.

Introduction: Dry socket and infection are complications of tooth extractions. The objective was to determine risk factors for post-extraction complications in patients without antibiotic prophylaxis stratified by early- and late-complications and complication type (oral infection and dry socket).

Methods: Retrospective, case (with complications)-control (without complications) study of patients (n = 708) who had ≥1 extraction performed at any Veterans Health Administration facility between 2015-2019 and were not prescribed an antibiotic 30 days pre-extraction.

Although urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common in patients with neurogenic bladder (NB), limited data exist on UTI perceptions, experiences, and beliefs in these patients. We recruited adults with NB due to spinal cord injury/disorder (SCI/D) or multiple sclerosis (MS) at three Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers to participate in 11 virtual focus groups. Audio transcripts were coded using a mixed approach with primary deductive codes linked to the Health Belief Model, and secondary inductive codes informed by grounded theory.

Objective: To test an intervention designed to improve patient engagement in telehealth visits by encouraging patients to use active communication behaviors.

Methods: US Veterans with type 2 diabetes mellitus receiving primary care using telehealth were randomized 1:1 to receive both a pre-visit educational video and pamphlet (intervention) or pamphlet alone (control) prior to their scheduled telehealth visit. Data were collected before and after the intervention from the medical record and at telephone interviews (questionnaires).

Clinical Video Telehealth (CVT) use is increasing and allows geographically separated care; however, this separation may affect participants behaviors. Using semi-structured in-depth interviews, we asked CVT nurse practitioners (NP), staff and patients at a VA Medical Center about perspectives on how CVT effects communication and identified three themes. They remarked on the complexity of scheduling appointments, local barriers to care, and acutely ill patients.

Background: Clinical video telehealth (CVT) offers the opportunity to improve access to healthcare providers in medically underserved areas. However, because CVT encounters are mediated through technology, they may result in unintended consequences related to the patient-provider interaction.

Methods: Twenty-seven patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus enrolled in Veteran Affairs Health Care and at least one previous telehealth visit experience were interviewed regarding their perspectives on facilitators and barriers to communication with their provider during their CVT visit.
