Light of different wavelengths can be used to obtain a more profitable outcome of photodynamic therapy (PDT), according to the absorption bands of the photosensitizer (PS). Low-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasias (CINs) are superficial lesions that can be treated with light of shorter wavelength than red because a large light penetration depth in tissue is not necessary. We report a comparative investigation performed to evaluate the efficacy of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) of different wavelengths in the photodynamic treatment applied to both 2D and 3D HeLa cell spheroid cultures.

Interpretation: RAS-RAF-MEK-ERK is a key pathway for apoptosis regulation in cancer cells. B-Raf-inhibitors such as PLX4032 peptide was developed by Institute Curie-Université Pierre et Marie Curie in order to induce apoptosis in cancer cells.

Objectives: To demonstrate pro-apoptotic properties and survival outcome of EP2014/064243 peptide in murine aggressive lymphoma.

[Retinoic acid syndrome].

Medicina (B Aires)

September 1998

Retinoic acid syndrome still remains as the most significant complication of the differentiation treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia. Of unknown pathogenesis this syndrome is close but not absolutely related to hyperleukocytosis developed during treatment. It shares clinico-biological characteristics with three other known syndromes: adult respiratory distress syndrome, endotoxic shock and capillary leak syndrome.

In order to study the lesions produced by lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) adult guinea-pigs were inoculated intraperitoneally with 1000 PFU of the WE or the Armstrong strain of LCMV. The animals were sacrificed at 3, 7, 10 and 14 days p.i.

Administration of cyclophosphamide (CY) to guinea pigs infected with a lethal strain of Junin virus (JV) delayed the time of death, with survival of a small number of animals. Virological studies showed a temporary decrease of virus concentration in blood and viscera shortly after the CY injection. In the pathological study no differences were found in the organic lesions present in CY-treated and nontreated animals, with the exception of the pulmonary alterations.

The role that polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) may play in Argentine hemorrhagic fever (AHF), an endemo-epidemic disease caused by Junín virus (JV), was investigated in experimentally infected guinea pigs depleted of PMN by means of specific antiserum. In leucopenic animals the evolution of the infection with a highly pathogenic strain of JV was more severe, with earlier mortality and higher virus yields in blood and viscera. The pathological study showed similar lesions in both the control and PMN-depleted animals with the exception of the lung, which showed the pathological picture of the human "pulmonary distress syndrome of the adult" in nontreated guinea pigs and appeared histologically unaltered in the PMN-depleted animals.

An association between viral antigens, cytopathic effect (CPE) and viral titers in blood and lymphoid tissues suggests a direct CPE of Junin virus on the lymphopoietic organs of guinea pigs infected with 10(3) 50% lethal doses of the XJ prototype strain. After seven days of infection, all lymphoreticular organs had infectivity titers higher than those for blood. Virus was recovered from bone marrow and lymph nodes at day 5 after infection; peak titers were obtained from bone marrow, spleen, and lymph nodes after day 10.

This cooperative prospective study was designed to answer the following questions in cases with acute lymphoblastic leukemia induced to achieve complete remission with the combination of vincristine and prednisone (if by day 29 the bone marrow was not M1, daunorubicin was added to the former regimen) and who received preventive CNS therapy with 2400 rad of cobalt-60 to craniocervical region and simultaneously intrathecal methotrexate and dexamethasone: 1) Is a short intensification with cytosine-arabinoside and cyclophosphamide immediately after complete remission useful? 2) Does the use of weekly doses of 6-mercaptopurine and methotrexate have the same maintenance effect as daily 6-mercaptopurine and twice weekly methotrexate? and 3) Do further 3 month-doses of intrathecal methotrexate and dexamethasone help to decrease still more the incidence of meningeal leukemia? From October 1972 to December 1975, 473 previously untreated patients entered this study and 465 (390 children and 75 adults) are evaluated in this paper. Of them, 373 (80%) achieved complete remission (children 84% and adults 61%). Out of 109 "high risk" children (one or more of the following characteristics at diagnosis: marked organomegaly, mediastinal widening, leukocytosis above 50000/mm3 and CNS involvement) 83 (76%) and out of 281 "standard risk" children (all the others) 244 (87%) achieved complete remission.
