Most cases of malaria in the United States, including the case described below, are due to travelers not taking proper prophylactic medications. With a potentially long incubation period, patients are frequently misdiagnosed (often with viral syndrome or pharyngitis) and correct treatment is delayed. Effective preventative medicines include Malarone, mefloquine, and doxycycline.

In the district of Tuttlingen a fluoride varnish and a fluoride gel are used in oral prevention. The gel is applied every 14 days in collaboration with 207 parents and teachers.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe effects of gold-thioglucose (GTG) treatment were examined in mice overexpressing GLUT4 selectively in skeletal muscle (MLC-GLUT4 mice) and in age-matched controls. Groups of MLC-GLUT4 and control mice were injected with GTG or saline at 5 weeks of age. At 12 weeks following the injections, GTG-treated control mice exhibited a 35% increase in body weight versus saline-treated controls.

Staff performance in a residential child-treatment facility was measured by counting the number of jobs completed and number of new procedures implemented within one week of their assignment. Public notices were posted listing each staff member's duties and new procedures to be implemented during the week. The notices produced an immediate increase in performance levels, which quickly tapered off.
