Residue of energetic formulations, which is deposited on military training grounds following incomplete detonation, poses biotic hazards. This residue can be transported off-site, adsorb to soil clays and organic matter, transform or degrade, or taken up by plants and animals. Its harmful effects can be mitigated by localizing the energetics at the site of initial deposition using soil amendments and allowing them to bio- and photodegrade in situ.

We present the first results from a proof-of-concept search for dark sectors via invisible decays of pseudoscalar η and η^{'} mesons in the NA64h experiment at the CERN SPS. Our novel technique uses the charge-exchange reaction of 50 GeV π^{-} on nuclei of an active target as the source of neutral mesons. The η,η^{'}→invisible events would exhibit themselves via a striking signature-the complete disappearance of the incoming beam energy in the detector.

New results are presented on a high-statistics measurement of Collins and Sivers asymmetries of charged hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering of muons on a transversely polarized ^{6}LiD target. The data were taken in 2022 with the COMPASS spectrometer using the 160 GeV muon beam at CERN, statistically balancing the existing data on transversely polarized proton targets. The first results from about two-thirds of the new data have total uncertainties smaller by up to a factor of three compared to the previous deuteron measurements.

The COMPASS Collaboration performed measurements of the Drell-Yan process in 2015 and 2018 using a 190  GeV/c π^{-} beam impinging on a transversely polarized ammonia target. Combining the data of both years, we present final results on the amplitudes of five azimuthal modulations, which correspond to transverse-spin-dependent azimuthal asymmetries (TSAs) in the dimuon production cross section. Three of them probe the nucleon leading-twist Sivers, transversity, and pretzelosity transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs).

We report the first search for dark sectors performed at the NA64 experiment employing a high energy muon beam and a missing energy-momentum technique. Muons from the M2 beamline at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron with a momentum of 160  GeV/c are directed to an active target. The signal signature consists of a single scattered muon with momentum <80  GeV/c in the final state, accompanied by missing energy, i.

Rare-earth-doped nanoscaled BaGdF is known as an efficient contrasting agent for X-ray micro-CT and NMR as well as a promising candidate for X-ray photodynamic therapy, thereby opening an opportunity for theragnostic applications. Conventional synthesis of Ln-doped BaGdF consider a long-lasting batch procedure, while a conjugation with photosensitizer usually implies a separate stage requiring active mixing. To the best of our knowledge, in this work, we for the first time obtain BaGdF:Tb nanophosphors in a microfluidic route at temperatures as low as 100 °C while decreasing the time of thermal treatment down to 6 min.

Article Synopsis
  • Digital soil maps are essential for various fields, and their accuracy is particularly challenged in dense environments like forests where soil is hidden.
  • This study assessed soil organic carbon stocks (SOC) in forests using three methods: regression kriging (RK), random forest (RF), and a hybrid model (RFOK) with Sentinel-2A satellite data, finding SOC ranged from 0.6 to 10.9 kg/m, averaging 4.9 kg/m.
  • The hybrid RFOK method provided the best accuracy (RMSE = 1.58 kg/m, NSE = 0.33) and highlighted the significance of Sentinel-2A's SWIR B12 band, suggesting that considering spatial correlations is crucial for effective

To evaluate the environmental concerns associated with heavy metals (HMs) during their translocations in food chains, it is crucial to gather data on the types of HMs present in soils in order to ascertain their toxicity and potential to migrate. An overview of the findings from several physical techniques used to determine and identify the HMs, sediments, individual minerals, and organic components in contaminated agricultural and industrial soils, is provided in this review article. These studies cover a variety of X-ray-based analytical techniques, including most widely used ones like X-ray absorption near edge structure, extended X-ray absorption fine structure, X-ray diffraction, and less popular ones X-ray fluorescence, etc.

Thermal dark matter models with particle χ masses below the electroweak scale can provide an explanation for the observed relic dark matter density. This would imply the existence of a new feeble interaction between the dark and ordinary matter. We report on a new search for the sub-GeV χ production through the interaction mediated by a new vector boson, called the dark photon A^{'}, in collisions of 100 GeV electrons with the active target of the NA64 experiment at the CERN SPS.

Predicting solubility of small molecules is a very difficult undertaking due to the lack of reliable and consistent experimental solubility data. It is well known that for a molecule in a crystal lattice to be dissolved, it must, first, dissociate from the lattice and then, second, be solvated. The melting point of a compound is proportional to the lattice energy, and the octanol-water partition coefficient (log ) is a measure of the compound's solvation efficiency.

Insensitive munition constituents derived from residues of low order detonations and deposited on military training grounds present environmental risks. A series of rainfall simulation experiments on small soil plots examined the effect of precipitation, soil properties, and particle size on transport of IMX-104 munition components: NTO (3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one), DNAN (2,4-dinitroanisole), RDX (hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine), and HMX (octahydro-1,3,5,7- tertranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine). The primary pathways for rainfall driven transport were subsurface infiltration, off-site transport in solution, and transport in solid form including re-adsorption onto soil particles.

X-ray photodynamic therapy (XPDT) is aimed at the treatment of deep-located malignant tumors thanks to the high penetration depth of X-rays. In XPDT therapy, it is necessary to use materials that effectively absorb X-rays and convert them into visible radiation-nanophosphors. Rare-earth elements, fluorides, in particular, doped BaGdF, are known to serve as efficient nanophosphor.

The deposition of explosive contaminants in particulate form onto the soil surface during low-order detonations can lead to ground and surface water contamination. The vertical fate and transport of insensitive munitions formulation IMX-104 through soil has been thoroughly studied, however the lateral transport of explosive particles on the surface is less known. The objective of this research was to understand the impact of overland flow on the transport of IMX-104 constituent compounds 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO), 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN), hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), and octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX).
