Willows (genus ) are increasingly used in operational-scale ecosystem reclamation; however, different opinions exist regarding the optimal cutting size for planting under field conditions. We compared the survival of field-planted willow cuttings sourced from upland and lowland areas with varying diameters and lengths across two growing seasons. Cuttings were grouped into 15 size classes with different diameters (0.

Access to essential medicines is still suboptimal in many countries. Recent studies examining the registration of medicines at the country level show that a considerable proportion of essential medicines do not have any corresponding products registered for use at the country level and therefore cannot be available at all times. Conversely, many non-essential medicines are registered by regulatory authorities for local markets, potentially facilitating inappropriate drug use and antimicrobial resistance.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated the role of interleukin-6 (IL6) cytokine signaling in bovine embryo development by inhibiting the IL6 signal transducer (IL6ST).
  • Using a pharmacological inhibitor (SC144), the researchers found that blocking IL6ST signaling diminished embryo development and reduced cell numbers in critical stages like the 16-cell and blastocyst stages.
  • Additionally, employing CRISPR-Cas9 to disrupt IL6ST showed high editing efficiency and similarly affected embryo development, indicating that IL6 family signals are crucial for normal bovine embryo growth and organization during these early stages.

Background: There is limited evidence to support use of fixed dose combination (FDC) drugs in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. This study aimed to examine the sales and regulatory status of psychotropic FDCs in India, in the context of two government regulatory initiatives.

Methods: Official documents were searched to establish an account of the initiatives and measures targeting psychotropic FDCs.

Across the tree of life, species have repeatedly evolved similar phenotypes. While well-studied for ecological traits, there is also evidence for recurrent evolution of sexually selected traits. Swordtail fish (Xiphophorus) is a classic model system for studying sexual selection, and female Xiphophorus exhibit strong mate preferences for large male body sizes and a range of sexually dimorphic ornaments.

Global Burden of Disease (GBD) estimates have significant policy implications nationally and internationally. Disease burden metrics, particularly for depression, have played a critical role in raising governmental awareness of mental health and in calculating the economic cost of depression. Recently, the World Health Organization ranked depression as the single largest contributor to global disability.

Parliament has imposed duties on the government and NHS in England aimed at reducing health inequalities. AIM: to understand the effect on inequalities of government policies, which require the NHS in England to outsource elective surgery to the private sector. We analysed the numbers of admissions for hip and knee replacement surgery from the least and most deprived population quintiles in three time periods: before the introduction of the policies (1997/98-2002/03); following the implementation of the independent sector treatment centre programme (2003/04-2006/07); and after the extension of 'choice at referral' (2007/08-2018/19).

Objectives: To determine alignment between national and World Health Organization (WHO) treatment recommendations, medicines prioritisation in country's essential medicines list (EML), and medicines availability in National drug register.

Design: An audit of medicines for malaria, tuberculosis, hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus listed in the national standard treatment guidelines (STGs) of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, as of March 2021, against WHO treatment guidelines, and respective country EML and National drug register.

Setting: Not applicable.

Recent reviews and meta-analyses of metacognitive therapy for schizophrenia-spectrum disorder (SSD) have included uncontrolled studies, single-session interventions, and/or analyses limited to a single form of metacognitive therapy. We sought to evaluate the efficacy of metacognitive therapies more broadly based on controlled trials (CT) of sustained treatments. We conducted a pre-registered meta-analysis of controlled trials that investigated the effects of meta-cognitive therapies on primary positive symptom outcomes, and secondary symptom, function and/or insight measures.

Higher estrus-associated temperatures (HEAT) are a hallmark feature in sexually active females. The overarching aim of this study was to characterize the variability, magnitude, and persistence of HEAT in heifers and suckled beef cows as well as identify associated factors when occurring during thermoneutral conditions at the onset of the spring breeding season. In both heifers and cows, estrus was induced using a 7-d controlled internal drug release (CIDR)-PGF2α protocol.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) remains a leading cause of preventable harm among hospitalized patients. Pharmacologic VTE prophylaxis reduces the rate of in-hospital VTE by 60%, but medication administration is often missed for various reasons. Electronic medical record (EMR) prompts may be a useful tool to decrease withholding of critical VTE chemoprophylaxis medications.

Objectives: (a) To critically appraise the quality of data submitted by sub-Saharan African (SSA) cancer registries to GLOBOCAN 2020 and (b) compare the quality of data of the registries common to GLOBOCAN 2008 and 2020.

Design: Critical appraisal of cancer registry data quality using the Parkin and Bray framework.

Setting And Participants: GLOBOCAN 2020 cancer registry estimates for 46 countries in SSA.

Background: In India, states have licensed the manufacture of large numbers of fixed-dose combination (FDC) drugs without the required prior approval of the central regulator. This paper describes two major regulatory initiatives to address the problem, which began in 2007 and 2013, and examines whether they have been sufficient to remove centrally unapproved systemic antibiotic FDCs from the market.

Methods: Information was extracted from documents published by the central regulator and the ministry of health, including the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM), and court judgments, and analysed alongside sales volume data for 2008-2020 using PharmaTrac market dataset.

Introduction: Infective endocarditis (IE) during pregnancy is a rare condition that is associated with a high level of morbidity and mortality. The epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis have changed significantly in the last two decades. The declining incidence of rheumatic heart disease, improved life expectancy with congenital heart disease, advances in cardiac surgery and cardiac devices, rise in resistant microorganisms, complications of the opioid epidemic, and increasing maternal age are some of the many factors contributing to these changes.

Objectives: Given emerging data suggesting that uncertainty in the relative biologic effectiveness at the distal end of the Bragg peak results in increased mucosal injury in patients with oropharynx cancer receiving adjuvant proton therapy, we evaluated the results of post-treatment positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET/CT) in patients with p16-positive oropharynx cancer (p16+OPC) treated with definitive intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT).

Material And Methods: A retrospective cohort study of patients with p16+OPC treated with definitive IMPT between 2016 and 2022 was performed at a single institution. Patients with PET/CT scans within 6 months following completion of IMPT were included in the study.

Preovulatory follicle response to the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge leads to metabolic, molecular, and functional changes in the oocyte and somatic follicular cells from the onset of estrus to ovulation. Follicular fluid contains metabolites, miRNAs, proteins, and hormones that are byproducts of follicular metabolism and support cellular processes of oocyte, cumulus, and granulosa constituents. Numerous studies have highlighted the importance of follicular fluid composition to support fertility, but critical gaps exist toward understanding dynamic modifications in the follicular fluid metabolome from estrous onset to ovulation.

  • Many ant species possess chemical defenses, but their effects on the nervous system remain poorly understood.
  • Research showed that various ant strains respond to chemical extracts from the invasive Argentine Ant, and a specific ion channel is necessary for this response.
  • Conducted in an undergraduate lab course, the study demonstrated that chemotaxis assays can yield valuable research experiences and enhance understanding of interactions between different ant species.
