The involvement of these neuropeptides in social cognition in ageing, however, and a potential mediating effect of basic cognitive capacities on this link, are not well understood. View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Quantifying the amount and diversity of antibiotic use in United States hospitals assists antibiotic stewardship efforts but is hampered by limited national surveillance. Our study aimed to address this knowledge gap by examining adult antibiotic use across 576 hospitals and nearly 12 million encounters in 2016-2017.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of patients aged ≥ 18 years discharged from hospitals in the Premier Healthcare Database between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2017.
This meta-analytic study systematically investigates the relations between perceived racial/ethnic discrimination and socioemotional distress, academics, and risky health behaviors during adolescence, and potential variation in these relations. The study included 214 peer-reviewed articles, theses, and dissertations, with 489 unique effect sizes on 91,338 unique adolescents. Random-effects meta-analyses across 11 separate indicators of well-being identified significant detrimental effects.

We develop a robust ranking procedure to uncover trends in variation in antibiotic resistance (AR) rates across hospitals for some antibiotic-bacterium pairs over several years. We illustrate how the method can be used to detect potentially dangerous trends and to direct attention to hospitals' management practices. A robust method is indicated due to the fact that some unusual reported resistance rates may be due to measurement protocol differences and not any real difference in AR rates.

We used a common mouse model of DS, the Ts65Dn mouse, to study the contribution of Tbx5, a known modifier of CHD, to heart defects on a trisomic backgroun. Measurement of antimicrobial use before and after an intervention and the associated outcomes are key activities of antimicrobial stewardship programs. In the United States, the recommended metric for aggregate antibiotic use is days of therapy/1000 patient-days. Clinical outcomes, including response to therapy and bacterial resistance, are critical measures but are more difficult to document than economic outcomes.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFStudy Objectives: To determine the proportion of hospitalized adults with hospital-onset Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) who continued to receive concomitant non-CDI antibacterial agents, to characterize the antibacterial therapy that these patients received before and after the diagnosis of CDI, and to compare hospital outcomes between those patients who did and those who did not have their previous antibacterial therapy discontinued after CDI diagnosis.
Design: Retrospective cohort study.
Data Source: Drug use and administrative discharge data from 42 United States academic medical centers.
Hospitals are implementing antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) in response to national guidelines to improve the use and to extend the utility of antiinfective drugs. An often implied purpose of ASPs is to curb or reverse the emergence of resistant bacteria. Because antibiotic use causes antibiotic resistance, there is a natural tendency to link local measures of antibiotic use to local measures of bacterial resistance, and the hospital antibiogram is a readily available measure of resistance.

The hedgehog (HH) family of growth factors is involved in many aspects of growth and development, from the establishment of left-right axes at gastrulation to the patterning and formation of multiple structures in essentially every tissue, to the maintenance and regulation of stem cell populations in adults. Sonic hedgehog (Shh) in particular acts as a mitogen, regulating proliferation of target cells, a growth factor that triggers differentiation in target populations, and a morphogen causing cells to respond differently based on their positions along a spatial and temporal concentration gradient. Given its very broad range of effects in development, it is not surprising that many of the structures affected by a disruption in Shh signaling are also affected in Down syndrome (DS).

Purpose: The degree of compliance with antibiogram guidance among University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) hospitals was analyzed.
Methods: The UHC Pharmacy Council Pharmacy Practice Advancement Committee conducted a survey to evaluate hospital policies regarding the generation, reporting, and utilization of antibiograms among UHC hospitals. The survey was distributed via a UHC online survey tool to pharmacy directors at 237 UHC hospitals.
Background: Antimicrobial stewardship programs are advised to measure and risk-adjust antimicrobial use to facilitate interhospital comparisons, a process called benchmarking. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate a new benchmarking strategy for antibacterials.
Methods: Hospital-wide adult antibacterial drug use in 2009 was measured as days of therapy (DOT) and length of therapy (LOT) from billing records in 70 US academic medical centers (AMCs).
