Background: Chronic pelvic pain is a debilitating condition affecting quality of life. Endometriosis is one of the leading causes of CPP, but recent studies highlighted the role of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/PBS) in causing CPP. Only some studies addressed the coexistence of these two conditions, which seems more frequent than what is supposed, leading to diagnostic delays and unnecessary surgeries.

Our approximation can be used for all processes governed by non-linear master equations without long-range interactions and with a conserved number of entities, which are typical in biological systems, such as gene regulatory or chemical reaction networks, where no exact solution exists. For linear systems, the RWA becomes the exact result obtained from the maximum entropy principle.

We compared the psychological impact of CF transmembrane conductance regulator-related metabolic syndrome (CRMS)/CF screen-positive, inconclusive diagnosis (CFSPID), and clear CF diagnosis, on parents.
Methods: The participants were administered the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and the Italian version of the Impact of Event Scale-Revised as quantitative tools and semi-structured interviews as qualitative tools.

Objectives: Mini-puberty is the physiological and transient activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis occurring during the first months after birth. In preterm infants, the hormonal surge is more pronounced and longer-lasting than in at-term-peers. To date, only few cases of vaginal bleeding in the setting of an exaggerated mini-puberty have been reported.

An optimization work on dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on both artificial and natural dyes was carried out by a fine synthesis work embedding gold nanoparticles in a TiO semiconductor and perfecting the TiO particle sizes of the scattering layer. Noble metal nanostructures are known for the surface plasmon resonance peculiarity that reveals unique properties and has been implemented in several fields such as sensing, photocatalysis, optical antennas and PV devices. By embedding gold nanoparticles in the mesoporous TiO layer and adding a scattering layer, we were able to boost the power conversion efficiency (PCE) to 10.

The growth is governed by a reproduction rate obeying a probability distribution with finite mean a[over ¯] and variance v_{a}. These two control parameters determine if the avalanche size tends to a stationary distribution (finite scale statistics with finite mean and variance, or power-law tailed statistics with exponent ∈(1,3]), or instead to a nonstationary regime with log-normal statistics.

Studies in non-human animal models have revealed that in early development, the onset of visual input gates the critical period closure of some auditory functions. The study of rare individuals whose sight was restored after a period of congenital blindness offers the rare opportunity to assess whether early visual input is a prerequisite for the full development of auditory functions in humans as well. Here, we investigated whether a few months of delayed visual onset would affect the development of Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABRs).

Method: The present study aims at assessing the possible associations between levels of physical activity (PA) and clinical features, endocrinological data and psychopathological traits in a sample of 244 female adolescents hospitalised for AN subdivided into two groups according to PA levels (high PA vs. no/low PA).

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant multisystemic disorder caused by mutations in either TSC1 or TSC2 genes and is characterized by hamartomas in multiple organs. The most frequent and best-known ocular manifestation in TSC is the retinal hamartoma. Less frequent ocular manifestations include punched out areas of retinal depigmentation, eyelid angiofibromas, uveal colobomas, papilledema, and sector iris depigmentation.

As a type of capsular polysaccharide (CPS) of streptococcus pneumoniae, pneumococcal polysaccharides are essential components for colonization and virulence in mammalian hosts. This study aimed to characterize the CPS structure of type 8 streptococcus pneumoniae, which is one of the most fatal serotypes.

Non-infectious uveitis can be an expression of a systemic autoimmune condition, or it can be idiopathic. It is a serious disease, associated with possible severe complications leading to visual impairment and blindness.

Design: Prospective cohort of subjects aged 50-69 years, undergoing their first FIT between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2010 in four population-based programmes in Italy.
Methods: All programmes adopted the same analytical procedure (OC Sensor, Eiken Japan), performed every 2 years, on a single sample, with the same positivity cut-off (20 µg Hb/g faeces).
Social network analysis can draw upon surveys and discussions to generate quantitative and qualitative data. We describe network data generated via a social network survey and discussion activity with high school science teachers in a teacher leadership development program. Data include social network maps related to seeking expertise in teaching content and/or pedagogy, disaggregated by contacts at the school, district, state, nation, and international spheres of influence.

Understanding how to control the formation of hot spots in a dynamic and reversible way is crucial to further expand the panorama of plasmon enhanced phenomena. In this work, we investigate the ability to modulate the hot spots in magnetic-plasmonic iron-doped silver nanoparticles dispersed in aqueous solution, by applying an external magnetic field.

Mixed, self-assembled, monolayer (SAM)-protected AuNPs, prepared with incompatible hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon amphiphilic ligands, are used here to probe the molecular basis of surface phase separation and disclose the role of fluorinated ligands on the interaction with lipid model membranes and cells, by integrating in silico and experimental approaches. These results indicate that the presence of fluorinated amphiphilic ligands enhances the membrane binding ability and cellular uptake of gold nanoparticles with respect to those coated only with hydrogenated amphiphilic ligands.

Sugar-1-phosphates of D-xylose and L-arabinose were synthesized from their β-glycosylsulfonylhydrazides and evaluated as substrates for recombinant UDP-sugar pyrophosphorylases from or to furnish the biologically active nucleotide. The facile, three-step procedure takes advantage of substrate diversity available through chemical synthesis followed by the selectivity of enzyme catalysis.

Here we investigate the OER activity of Au-Fe nanoalloys obtained by laser-ablation synthesis in solution. This method allows a high amount of iron (up to 11 at %) to be incorporated into the gold lattice, which is not possible in Au-Fe alloys synthesized by other routes, due to thermodynamic constraints.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFLow intrinsic toxicity, high solubility, and stability are important and necessary features of gold nanoparticles to be used in the biomedical field. In this context, charged nanoparticles proved to be very versatile, and among them charged mixed-monolayer gold nanoparticles, displaying monolayers with well-defined morphologies, represent a paradigm. By using mixtures of hydrogenated and fluorinated thiols, the formation of monolayer domains may be brought to an extreme because of the immiscibility of fluorinated and hydrogenated chains.
