The development of attitudes toward science and technology: a longitudinal analysis of Generation X.

Research on public attitudes toward science and technology policy has relied on surveys taken at single points in time. These surveys fail to indicate how these attitudes develop or change. In this study, we use data from the Longitudinal Study of American Life that has followed a national sample of Generation X for 33 years-from middle school to midlife.

The acceptance of evolution: A developmental view of Generation X in the United States.

The public acceptance of evolution remains a contentious issue in the United States. Numerous investigations have used national cross-sectional studies to examine the factors associated with the acceptance or rejection of evolution. This analysis uses a 33-year longitudinal study that followed the same 5000 public-school students from grade 7 through midlife (ages 45-48) and is the first to do so in regard to evolution.

Public attitude toward Covid-19 vaccination: The influence of education, partisanship, biological literacy, and coronavirus understanding.

The Covid-19 pandemic posed new issues about vaccination and contagious diseases that had not been the focus of public policy debate in the United States since the tuberculosis pandemic of the late 19th century and the early 20th century. Using a national address-based probability sample of American adults in 2020 and a structural equation model, this analysis seeks to understand the role of education, age, gender, race, education, partisanship, religious fundamentalism, biological literacy, and understanding of the coronavirus to predict individual intention concerning taking the Covid-19 vaccine. Given the substantial changes in the United States since the tuberculosis pandemic, it is important to understand the factors that drive acceptance and hesitancy about Covid-19 vaccination.

Public acceptance of evolution in the United States, 1985-2020.

The public acceptance of evolution in the United States is a long-standing problem. Using data from a series of national surveys collected over the last 35 years, we find that the level of public acceptance of evolution has increased in the last decade after at least two decades in which the public was nearly evenly divided on the issue. A structural equation model indicates that increasing enrollment in baccalaureate-level programs, exposure to college-level science courses, a declining level of religious fundamentalism, and a rising level of civic scientific literacy are responsible for the increased level of public acceptance.

[Trust, attitudes, information: a study on the perception of the COVID-19 pandemic in 12 Brazilian cities].

In this study, the perception of Brazilians regarding COVID-19 in 12 cities in the country was analyzed. Issues about the severity and dangers of the disease, sources of information and reliability, checking information, attitudes, precautions, and priorities for coping and trusting relationships in science were addressed. This study was carried out in the context of broader research on how Brazilians perceive the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz).

Therapeutic mammaplasties: full local control of breast cancer in one surgical stage with frozen section.

Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic mammoplasty with frozen section in achieving negative surgical margins in a single-stage surgery for breast cancer.

Methods: Fifty patients affected by early stage breast cancer treated by therapeutic mammaplasties were retrospectively reviewed in this study. Fifty-two therapeutic mammaplasties were accomplished.

[Laparoscopic treatment of liver hydatid cyst: personal technique].

Treatment of liver hydatid cyst is still controversial. Besides medical treatment, interventional radiologic techniques and traditional surgery, recently the laparoscopic approach has been proposed. Laparoscopic treatment of liver hydatid cyst, however, has not been well defined so far and seems to be associated with a recurrence rate from 0 to 9%, in a 3-49 months follow-up.

Laparoscopic splenectomy reduces the need for platelet transfusion in patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.

Objectives: Laparoscopic splenectomy has been increasingly used in patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Because it is associated with minimal abdominal trauma, platelet consumption could be reduced with the laparoscopic approach. The aim of this study was to analyze intraoperative bleeding and the need for apheresis platelets, comparing laparoscopic with open splenectomy.
