Mice of two strains selected for successful solution of "object permanence" test and for lack of such solution demonstrated the differential reaction to injections of two drugs. The effects of injections of atomoxetine. which blocks the noradrenaline reuptake, and of 'non-benzodiazepine" anxiolytic afobazol was different.

Epilepsy is a group of neurological diseases which requires significant economic costs for the treatment and care of patients. The central point of epileptogenesis stems from the failure of synaptic signal transmission mechanisms, leading to excessive synchronous excitation of neurons and characteristic epileptic electroencephalogram activity, in typical cases being manifested as seizures and loss of consciousness. The causes of epilepsy are extremely diverse, which is one of the reasons for the complexity of selecting a treatment regimen for each individual case and the high frequency of pharmacoresistant cases.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn this paper, the data are presented concerning different reactions to seven daily injections of atomoxetine in two mouse strains differing in relative brain weight. Atomoxetine affected the performance in a puzzle-box cognitive test in a complicated way-the large brain mice were less successful at task solutions (presumably because they were not afraid of the brightly lit test box), while the small brain strain of atomoxetine treated mice solved the task more successfully. The behavior of all atomoxetine treated animals was more active in an aversive situation (an unescapable slippery funnel, (analogous to the Porsolt test) and the time of immobility decreased significantly in all atomoxetine treated mice.

The levels of a number of pro-inflammatory cytokines were examined in the Krushinsky-Molodkina (KM) rat strain with high audiogenic epilepsy (AE) proneness (intense tonic seizure fit in response to loud sound) and in the control strain "0" (not predisposed to AE) using multiplex immunofluorescence magnetic assay (MILLIPLEX map Kit). Cytokine levels were determined in the dorsal striatum tissue and in the brain stem.

This test evaluates the success (or failure) in finding the underpass, leading to the dark part of the box, when it is blocked. The wild run stage of audiogenic seizure fit could be regarded as an intense panic reaction, and this view found support in numerous experimental data. The phenomenon of audiogenic epilepsy probably attracted the attention of physiologists as rodents are extremely sensitive to dangerous sound stimuli.

The article reflects methodological approaches to the formation of a list of rare and in need of protection species and describes the corresponding datasets published in GBIF.
New Information: Information about 7,187 occurrences of 438 rare species and infraspecies included in the third edition of the 'Red Data Book of the Komi Republic' have been published.
Using the selected mouse strain EX as the founding population (selection for extrapolation ability) three selection generations of mice were obtained, which were selected for successful solution of object permanence test (plus-sub-strain) and for lack of such solution (minus-sub-strain). The successful solution required not only the ability to operate the object permanence rule (by J. Piajet), but the performance of complicated action (executive function) which was significantly higher in plus-substrain, and this is the unique example of successful selection for cognitive trait.

Ethosuximide given with drinking water (300 mg/kg/day) over 45 days slightly reduced proneness to audiogenic epilepsy and increased locomotor activity of the animals at the periphery of the open field. Neonatal administration of ethosuximide (3-4 mg per animal, from 2 to 10 days of life) insignificantly modulated the parameters of audiogenic epilepsy in these animals at the age of 1.

The relative brain weight was higher and neurogenesis in the hippocampal fascia dentate was more intensive in this group. In non-selected mice, the changes were similar, but insignificant in many cases.

Using immunoblotting, we showed that in rats of audiogenic epilepsy (AE) prone strain (Krushinsky- Molodkina, KM) the superior colliculus tissue (SC) contains significantly less quantity of glial neurotrophic factor (GDNF), beta-tubulin and actin in comparison to the same brain region in "0" rats, nonprone to AE. This fact led to the suggestion that the histological structure of the SC in KM rats could differ significantly from that of the "0" strain. Using neuromorphologу technique, we demonstrated that the total number of SC cells, as well as the number of neurons were significantly less in KM rats than in the "0" strain rats.

Presumably, this effect is determined by the activation of the heat-shock protein system (stress proteins).

We didn't find significant changes in respiration rats of brain and liver mitochondria of KM and control rats; however the efficiency of АТР synthesis in the KM rat mitochondria was 10% lower. In rats with audiogenic epilepsy the concentration of oxidative stress marker malondialdehyde in mitochondria of the brain (but not liver) was 2-fold higher than that in the control rats.

Materials And Methods: 1108 residents of Voronezh city at the age from 20 to 75 years were examined in 2015 including measurement of their height, body mass, arterial pressure, and BMI calculation. Medical histories were analyzed to reveal arterial hypertension in the preceding period in the following age groups: 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-75 yr and the entire study group (20-75 yr).
Mice with a knockout of the sodium-calcium exchanger 2 (NCX2) gene were statistically significantly more successful than wild-type controls in the solution of two cognitive tasks, the test for the capacity to extrapolate the direction of the stimulus movement and the "puzzle-box" test for the capacity to find a hidden route to safe environment, which were based on food and aversive motivations, respectively. In both tests, the success of task solution was based on the animal's ability to use the object's "permanence" rule (according to J. Piaget).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAnxiety (Anx) and depression (Dp) levels were evaluated in rats of 4 lines: 2 of them (KM and "4") exhibited audiogenic seizures (AS), and 2 (Wistar and "0") had no AS. In KM rats (with AS), Anx and Dp levels were higher than in Wistars (without AS), while in "4" and "0" rats with the related genetic background but contrasting in AS severity, Anx and Dp indices were not different. Fluoxetine treatment exerted antidepressant effect in all rat lines irrespective of its effect on AS.

GABAergic brain system is an important link in the pathological circuits of rodent audiogenic epilepsy (AE). The number of GABAergic neurons in the inferior colliculi of KM strain rats (AE prone) was not different from that of the control non-prone strain. At the same time, the glutamate decarboxylase mRNA expression (the key enzyme of GABA synthesis) was 5 times higher than in control.
