Objective: Obstructive sleep apnea is common in children with Down syndrome (DS). Tonsillectomy is recommended as the first-line approach in treating children with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), however, there is limited data on the long-term outcomes in children with DS who undergo tonsillectomy. In this retrospective study, we examined the long-term polysomnographic and symptomatic outcomes in children with DS who underwent tonsillectomy with or without an adenoidectomy (T&A).

Bacterially induced precipitation of minerals leading to cementation of natural geological formations has been well recorded in a variety of environments. A range of microbial pathways and geochemical processes have been found to influence the cementation processes; but detailed formation mechanisms and biogeochemical relationships are still not very clear. There has been a growing demand for the application of bacterially driven biocementation in a number of geotechnical engineering applications recently.

Molecular and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of canine parvovirus 2 (CPV-2) in dogs in southeast Anatolia, Turkey.

Canine parvovirus-2 (CPV-2) is the aetiological agent of an infectious viral disease of dogs, characterised by diarrhoea and vomiting. Mutations of the CPV-2 genome have generated new variants circulating worldwide. This article reports the molecular analysis of CPV-2 variants collected in the dog population in southeast Anatolia, Turkey.

Novel Tick Genotypes Lacking Evidence for Vertebrate Infections in Anatolia and Thrace, Turkey.

We screened ticks and human clinical specimens to detect and characterize tick phleboviruses and pathogenicity in vertebrates. Ticks were collected at locations in Istanbul (Northwest Anatolia, Thrace), Edirne, Kırklareli, and Tekirdağ (Thrace), Mersin (Mediterranean Anatolia), Adiyaman and Şanlıurfa (Southeastern Anatolia) provinces from 2013-2018 and were analyzed following morphological identification and pooling. Specimens from individuals with febrile disease or meningoencephalitic symptoms of an unknown etiology were also evaluated.

Expression of ADAMTS-7 in myocardial dystrophy associated with white muscle disease in lambs.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of ADAMTS-7 gene in the pathogenesis of myocardial dystrophy associated with white muscle disease (WMD) in lambs. A total of 217 cardiac tissue samples from lambs with WMD were used in the study. Histopathological sections of the samples were stained with hematoxylin-eosin (HE) and examined using Western-blot, real-time PCR (RT-PCR) and immunohistochemistry for ADAMTS-7 gene expression, and the findings were statistically evaluated.

Improvement of Neuropathy Symptoms With Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in a Patient With Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease.

This is a case report describing a 53-year-old woman with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, obstructive sleep apnea, and a 6-year history of numbness in bilateral upper extremities, feet, and in the trunk that resolved with initiation of continuous positive airway pressure for her obstructive sleep apnea.

A rare case of neuro-Behçet's disease presenting with limbic encephalitis.

Behçet's syndrome is a recurrent systemic inflammation with an unknown etiology. The onset of the condition often occurs in the second decade of life and it is more common in males than in females. One of the most feared organ involvements associated with BS is neurological involvement, which often affects the brain stem, although hemispheric involvement may be primary in a limited number of patients.

Background: Ticks are involved with the transmission of several viruses with significant health impact. As incidences of tick-borne viral infections are rising, several novel and divergent tick- associated viruses have recently been documented to exist and circulate worldwide. This study was performed as a cross-sectional screening for all major tick-borne viruses in several regions in Turkey.

This is a cross-sectional study. The data of the study were collected between February and September 2014 in Şanlıurfa, Turkey.

Can the Function-Morphology Association Be a Model for the Early Detection of COPD in Asymptomatic Smokers?

Objective: In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the morphological and functional characteristics in symptomatic and asymptomatic smokers in comparison to nonsmokers in order to gain better understanding of the pathogenesis and early diagnosis of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Materials And Methods: A Randomized, double-blind, placebo -controlled, parallel-group trial vas performed.

Patients And Interventions: A total of 50 male patients (40 smokers and 10 non-smokers) who completed a questionnaire, between the ages of 18-60 (mean age 32), were included the study.

Primary benign schwannoma of the left ventricle coursing under the left anterior descending artery.

A 57-year-old female patient with a mass adjacent to the left ventricle coursing along the left anterior descending artery has been reported. The maximum possible resection was performed at a maximum degree; however without complete removal. Histological examination revealed a benign primary schwannoma of the heart.

Mammary tuberculosis -- importance of recognition and differentiation from that of a breast malignancy: report of three cases and review of the literature.

Background: While tuberculosis of the breast is an extremely uncommon entity seen in western populations, it accounts for up to 3% of all treatable breast lesions in developing countries.

Case Presentations: We reviewed three female cases of mammary tuberculosis that were diagnosed and treated in Turkey during the same calendar year. All three patients presented with a painful breast mass.

Preoperative staging of esophageal carcinoma with multidetector CT and virtual endoscopy.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT), including virtual endoscopy (VE) for detection, precise localization, preoperative evaluation and staging of esophageal cancer (EC) by comparison with surgical and histopathological findings.

Materials And Methods: Between September 2003 and April 2005, 44 patients with histologically proven EC underwent MDCT and VE. Among 44 patients, the findings were confirmed in 24 at surgery.

Trichoptysis caused by intrapulmonary teratoma: computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings.

We describe a 9-year-old child with a history of trichoptysis caused by intrapulmonary teratoma and we present the CT and MRI findings of the teratoma. A heterogeneous mass containing cystic and solid elements was detected on both CT and MRI scans. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of teratoma.

Pulmonary hypoplasia in a 52-year-old woman.

Pulmonary hypoplasia is a bronchopulmonary foregut anomaly characterized by a decreased number of alveoli and decreased alveolar air space. At autopsy, pulmonary hypoplasia is one of the important causes of death in newborns and infants. Pulmonary hypoplasia is rare in adults.

Handedness differences in widths of right and left craniofacial regions in healthy young adults.

In this work, handedness differences in the widths of right and left craniofacial regions were studied in a healthy sample of 39 male and 43 female students, 17 to 23 years old. Width of craniofacial regions was assessed by computerized tomography. Handedness was associated with the left face width especially for women.
