Partial melting of deeply subducted eclogite from the Sulu orogen in China.

We report partial melting of an ultrahigh pressure eclogite in the Mesozoic Sulu orogen, China. Eclogitic migmatite shows successive stages of initial intragranular and grain boundary melt droplets, which grow into a three-dimensional interconnected intergranular network, then segregate and accumulate in pressure shadow areas and then merge to form melt channels and dikes that transport magma to higher in the lithosphere. Here we show, using zircon U-Pb dating and petrological analyses, that partial melting occurred at 228-219 Myr ago, shortly after peak metamorphism at 230 Myr ago.

Protective and therapeutic effect of apocynin on bleomycin-induced lung fibrosis in rats.

We aimed to investigate the preventive and therapeutic effect of apocynin (APO) on bleomycin (BLC)-induced lung injury in rats. Rats were assigned into groups as follows: control group; APO group, 20 mg/kg APO was given intraperitoneal for 29 days; BLC-1 and BLC-2 groups, a single intratracheal injection of BLC (2.5 mg/kg); APO+BLC-preventive group, 20 mg/kg APO was administered 12 h before the intratracheal BLC injection and continued for 14 days; BLC+APO-treatment group, 20 mg/kg APO was given on the 14th day after the intratracheal BLC injection and continued to sacrifice.

No association between left-breast radiation therapy or breast arterial calcification and long-term cardiac events in patients with breast cancer.

Background: Recent studies have suggested an association between radiation therapy (RT) of the left breast and increased incidence of coronary artery disease. However, the increased sparing afforded with modern RT may decrease long-term cardiac risk. The aims of our study were to evaluate the association between the RT and cardiac events in breast cancer patients who underwent contemporary RT and to examine whether breast arterial calcification (BAC) seen on mammogram predicts for cardiac events.

Prognostıc value of increased HER2 expression in cancers of pancreas and biliary tree.

Increased HER2 expression has a prognostic, and predictive value in many solid cancer types, predominantly in breast cancer. However the effects of HER2 on survival from cancers of pancreas, gall bladder, cholangiocellular, and ampullary region are not known. In this study, the effects of increased HER2 expression on these types of cancer have been analyzed.

Fusion of peptide-based tags to recombinant proteins is currently one of the most used tools for protein production. Also, immobilized metal ion affinity chromatography (IMAC) has a huge application in protein purification, especially in research labs. The combination of expression systems of recombinant tagged proteins with this robust chromatographic system has become an efficient and rapid tool to produce milligram-range amounts of proteins.

Readmission To Intensive Care Unit After Coronary Bypass Operations in the Short Term.

Objective: Intensive care unit (ICU) readmissions after coronary bypass (CABG) operations occur in a significant number of patients, and the prognosis is poor. We analyzed the risk factors for ICU readmissions after CABG operations.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the prospectively collected data of 679 coronary bypass patients operated in a single institution in order to evaluate the risk factors for readmittance to the ICU with logistic regression analysis.

Prevention of proximal junctional kyphosis after posterior surgery of Scheuermann kyphosis: an operative technique.

Study Design: A prospective randomized study.

Objective: To introduce an operative technique that prevents proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) in Scheuermann disease after a segmental posterior spinal instrumentation and fusion.

Summary Of Background Data: PJK is the progression of kyphotic deformity at the proximal end of a construct >10 degrees, and it can be seen up to 30% after posterior Scheuermann kyphosis surgery.

Dopamine-secreting giant adrenal ganglioneuroma: clinical and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging findings.

We report a case of a dopamine-secreting giant primary adrenal ganglioneuroma (GN) in a 29-year-old male patient. Although the patient was clinically silent, the 24-hour urine levels of dopamine, normetanephrine, homovanillic acid and vanillyl mandelic acid were elevated. Abdominal ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a large solid tumor with calcifications and a slightly lobular edge on the left adrenal gland.

Perioperative management of tonsilloadenoidectomy and circumcision of a patient with Bernard-Soulier syndrome: case report.

Bernard-Soulier syndrome is an autosomal recessive coagulopathy characterized by thrombocytopenia, prolonged bleeding time and large platelets. Because of the rarity of this disease, standard perioperative treatment protocols have not been developed and there are not enough available data for the management of surgical procedures. In this case, we successfully performed adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy and circumcision surgery concurrently under the preventive and intermittent transfusion of platelets.

Towards single-cell LC-MS phosphoproteomics.

Protein phosphorylation is a ubiquitous posttranslational modification, which is heavily involved in signal transduction. Misregulation of protein phosphorylation is often associated with a decrease in cell viability and complex diseases such as cancer. The dynamic and low abundant nature of phosphorylated proteins makes studying phosphoproteome a challenging task.

Normal pressure hydrocephalus versus atrophic dilatation to distinguish and predict the benefits of surgical intervention with a phase-contrast MRI technique.

Aim: To compare mean cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) volume in the aqueduct by using phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging for the patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (INPH) and atrophic dilation (AD) to investigate the efficacy of this technique in predicting surgery.

Material And Methods: The MR images of a total of 80 individuals, consisting of 30 patients considered to have INPH, 20 patients with AD not proportional with cerebral sulci, and 30 control cases without a hydrocephalus clinical picture, were evaluated retrospectively. The minute mean aqueductal CSF flow rates of the three groups were compared using the Kruskall-Wallis analysis of variance, and the inter-group statistical comparisons were made using the Mann-Whitney U test.

The effect of alprazolam on acoustic stapedius reflex thresholds in healthy volunteers.

Alprazolam, a widely used drug, has widespread, nonspecific depressant effects on the central nervous system, similar to other benzodiazepines. This inhibitor effect may cause changes in reflex thresholds by affecting the acoustic stapedial reflex (ASR) arc. This study was performed on 31 healthy volunteers.

The protective role of molsidomine on the Cisplatin-induced ototoxicity.

This experimental study was designed to investigate the protective effects of molsidomine (MOL) on against cisplatin-induced ototoxicity (CIO). To examine this effect, distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) measurements and serum levels of oxidative and antioxidant status [including malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), and oxidative stress index (OSI)] were evaluated. Thirty-two female wistar albino rats were divided into four groups including; control (Group K), cisplatin (Group C), cisplatin plus MOL group (Group CM), and MOL group (Group M).

Abnormalities in human pluripotent cells due to reprogramming mechanisms.

Human pluripotent stem cells hold potential for regenerative medicine, but available cell types have significant limitations. Although embryonic stem cells (ES cells) from in vitro fertilized embryos (IVF ES cells) represent the 'gold standard', they are allogeneic to patients. Autologous induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells) are prone to epigenetic and transcriptional aberrations.

Endothelial function in patients with familial Mediterranean fever-related amyloidosis and association with cardiovascular events.

Objectives: Secondary amyloidosis is the most important complication of FMF and endothelial function is more severely impaired. Elevated asymmetric dimethyl arginine (ADMA) may mediate the excess cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk of this group. We aimed to compare endothelial function characteristics, including ADMA, in patients with FMF-related amyloidosis and primary glomerulopathies and to define risk factors for a CVD event.

Mode of delivery changes oxidative and antioxidative properties of human milk: a prospective controlled clinical investigation.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of delivery mode on oxidative stress in human breast milk.

Methods: Thirty-three women who delivered by vaginal birth and 55 women who underwent cesarean section (CS) were included in this study. Colostral samples were collected on the second day after delivery.

Intravascular virtual MR endoscopy evaluation of cerebral aneurysms.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of intravascular virtual MR endoscopy in the planning of correct surgical clipping of the aneurysm neck.

Material And Methods: A total of 36 aneurysms were detected by using magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) in thirty patients. Intravascular virtual MR endoscopy is a realistic 3-dimensional simulation of intravascular structures that is generated by postprocessing of MRA maximum-intensity projection images.

Two rare entities in the same palate lesion: hyalinizing-type clear cell carcinoma and necrotizing sialometaplasia.

Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma is a low-grade malignant epithelial neoplasm of the salivary glands. The tumor has epithelial cells and lacks myoepithelial cells. Necrotizing sialometaplasia is a benign, self-limiting lesion of the salivary glands.

Paratracheal air cysts: prevalence and correlation with lung diseases using multi-detector CT.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of paratracheal air cysts (PACs), their correlation with different lung diseases and their connection with the trachea by chest multi detector computed tomography (MDCT).

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed chest MDCT images of 8240 consecutive patients obtained from January 2010 to December 2011 with a 16-detector multi-detector CT scanner. PACs were assessed for prevalence, location, level, size and the presence of visible communication with the trachea.
