Background: Dried blood collection devices might be beneficial for diagnosing infectious diseases in areas far from the medical facilities and in lockdown situations. There are several reports on the efficacy of such applications for qualitative tests. Here we demonstrated the feasibility of a novel Ser-Col blood collection device as a standardized approach for qualitative and quantitative detection of infectious markers and several over immunochemical tests.

In 2014, a fire at an open cut coalmine in regional Victoria, Australia burned for 6 weeks. Residents of the nearby town of Morwell were exposed to smoke, which included high levels of fine particulate matter (PM). We investigated whether the long-term effects of PM on respiratory health were moderated by diet quality.

Coagulation and fibrinolysis in hyperparathyroidism secondary to vitamin D deficiency.

Introduction: Abnormal coagulation tests have been observed in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (HPT) suggesting a prothrombotic effect of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Vitamin D deficiency (VIDD) is the most frequent cause of secondary HPT. Aim of our study was to investigate the influence of HPT secondary to moderate-to-severe VIDD and vitamin D replacement on the coagulation and fibrinolysis system.

Periodontitis as a possible early sign of diabetes mellitus.

Objective: The early diagnosis of (pre)diabetes mellitus is essential for the prevention of diabetes complications. It has been suggested that gum disease (periodontitis) might be an early complication of diabetes and may be a useful risk indicator for diabetes screening. Therefore, a dental office could be a good location for screening for (pre)diabetes in patients with periodontitis using a validated glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) dry spot analysis.

Fecal Calprotectin, Elastase, and Alpha-1-Antitrypsin Levels After Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass; Calprotectin Is Significantly Elevated in the Majority of Patients.

Background: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) causes several alterations in gastrointestinal function. We hypothesized that levels of three commonly used fecal tests change after RYGB.

Methods: Fecal levels of calprotectin, elastase, and alpha-1-antitrypsin were determined in 122 patients without signs of gastrointestinal disease 1 to 2 years after RYGB.

Efficacy and tolerability of a high loading dose (25,000 IU weekly) vitamin D3 supplementation in obese children with vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency.

Background: The recommended dose of vitamin D supplementation of 400 IU/day might be inadequate to treat obese children with vitamin D insufficiency. Therefore, we tested the efficacy and tolerability of a high loading dose vitamin D3 supplementation of 25,000 IU weekly in multiethnic obese children, 8-18 years of age, with vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency.

Methods: Fasting blood samples were drawn for the assessment of vitamin D.

Conformal field theories in fractional dimensions.

We study the conformal bootstrap in fractional space-time dimensions, obtaining rigorous bounds on operator dimensions. Our results show strong evidence that there is a family of unitary conformal field theories connecting the 2D Ising model, the 3D Ising model, and the free scalar theory in 4D. We give numerical predictions for the leading operator dimensions and central charge in this family at different values of D and compare these to calculations of ϕ4 theory in the ϵ expansion.

Comparative study of blood collection tubes and thromboplastin reagents for correction of INR discrepancies: a proposal for maximum allowable magnesium contamination in sodium citrate anticoagulant solutions.

International normalized ratio (INR) discrepancies were noted between clinical laboratories using various prothrombin time (PT) systems. We studied the influence of different commercial blood collection tubes and different PT systems on INR measurements. INRs of fresh patient samples were determined by 3 laboratories, each using different PT systems.

Empirical protein partition functions.

In the present paper, we outline how to construct the partition function for a protein using empirical heat capacity data. The procedure is based on the calculation of a set of energy moments from the temperature dependence of the heat capacity. Given a set of energy moments, one can then use the maximum-entropy method to calculate an approximate energy distribution for the protein; the more energy moments one has, the better the approximation.

Producing a successful malaria vaccine: innovation in the lab and beyond.

With approximately 225 million new cases and 800,000 deaths annually, malaria exacts a tremendous toll--mostly on African children under the age of five. Late-stage trials of an advanced malaria vaccine candidate--which, if approved, would become the world's first malaria vaccine--are under way, and it may be ready for use by 2015. This article recounts the pivotal roles in that achievement played by collaborations of nonprofit organizations, pharmaceutical companies, private and public donors, and countries whose citizens would benefit most directly from a vaccine.

Environmental symbiont acquisition may not be the solution to warming seas for reef-building corals.

Background: Coral reefs worldwide are in decline. Much of the mortality can be attributed to coral bleaching (loss of the coral's intracellular photosynthetic algal symbiont) associated with global warming. How corals will respond to increasing oceanic temperatures has been an area of extensive study and debate.

In the present paper we examine the statistics of occurrence of A-T and C-G base pairs in DNA. We focus on the net base composition in blocks of base pairs of various sizes. This paper extends our previous work on randomness and order in DNA sequences and examines order on various scales.

The Irrational Food Beliefs Scale: development and validation.

This article reports the development and validation of a measure of Irrational Food Beliefs (IFB), defined as cognitively distorted and unhealthy attitudes and beliefs pertaining to food, which is proposed to be a factor that undermines success at weight loss and maintenance. Studies 1 and 2 demonstrated that the Irrational Food Beliefs Scale (IFBS) contains ecologically valid items and is comprised of two primary factors (irrational and rational food beliefs) whose items are internally consistent. Study 3 established that irrational subscale scores were positively associated with first semester weight gain in college freshmen.

Universal scaling of the C--G distribution of genes.

Using our previous result that the C--G distribution in genomes is very broad, varying as a power law of the size of the block of genome considered, we examine the C--G distribution in genes themselves. We show that the widths of the C--G distributions for the genes of several simple organisms also vary as power laws. This suggests that the power law behavior gives a universal scaling whereby the distributions for the C--G content of the genes from all species are mapped onto a single function.

Activated human PMN synthesize and release a strongly fucosylated glycoform of alpha1-acid glycoprotein, which is transiently deposited in human myocardial infarction.

Alpha1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) is a major acute-phase protein present in human plasma as well as in polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN). In this report, we show that PMN synthesize a specific glycoform of AGP, which is stored in the specific and azurophilic granules. Activation of PMN results in the rapid release of soluble AGP.
