The aim of the NEPTUNE (Nuclear process-driven Enhancement of Proton Therapy UNravEled) project is to investigate in detail both the physical and radiobiological phenomena that could justify an increase of the proton-induced cytogenetic effects in cells irradiated in presence of an agent containing natural boron. In this work, a double-stage silicon telescope coupled to different boron converters was irradiated at the CATANA proton therapy facility (INFN-LNS) for studying the proton boron fusion and the neutron boron capture reactions by discriminating secondary particles from primary protons. Different boron targets were developed by depositing boric acid, enriched with a higher than 99% content of B or B, on a 50 µm thick PolyMethilMetacrylate (PMMA) substrate.

Among the existing elemental characterization techniques, particle-induced x-ray emission (PIXE) and energy-dispersive x-ray (EDX) spectroscopy are two of the most widely used in different scientific and technological fields. The outcome of kidney transplant patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection is still unclear. Here we describe the clinical characteristics, disease outcome, and risk factors for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and death of a cohort of 53 kidney transplant patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Eight of 53 have been handled as outpatients because of mild disease, on average with immunosuppression reduction and the addition of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin; no patients required admission, developed ARDS, or died.

We are in the midst of a health emergency that is totally new for us all and that requires a concerted effort, especially when it comes to safeguarding patients on hemodialysis, and kidney transplant recipients. Brescia is currently a very active cluster of infections (2918 cases on the 17/03/2020), second only to Bergamo. The way our structure is organised has allowed us to treat nephropathic patients directly within the Nephrology Unit, following of course a great deal of reshuffling; at the moment, we are treating 21 transplanted patients and 17 on hemodialysis.

The performances of an innovative material based on graphene multilayers in a 3D structure similar to expanded graphite, Grafysorber G+ (Directa Plus), have been tested via in field applications on a real contaminated site. Several experimental tests were performed using Grafysorber inside adsorbent devices (booms and pillows) to treat waters polluted by oil. The experimental campaign was carried out with the aim of comparing the performances of Grafysorber with those of polypropylene (PP), which is the material used worldwide in case of water oil spill clean-up activities.

CSYP (CYlindrical SPectrometer) is a directional neutron spectrometer based on a single moderator embedding multiple thermal neutron detectors. Similarly to Bonner Spheres, CYSP responds from thermal up to GeV neutrons and the spectrum is obtained via few-channel unfolding methods.
