Objectives: To determine whether the Groningen Frailty Indicator (GFI) has a positive predictive value for postoperative delirium (POD) after vascular surgery.

Methods: Between March and August 2010, 142 consecutive vascular surgery patients were prospectively evaluated. Preoperatively, the GFI was obtained and postoperatively patients were screened with the Delirium Observation Scale (DOS).

Objective: This research studied the effects of laser therapy on healing processes following tooth extraction in healthy human subjects, evaluating some inflammation, osteogenesis, and clinical parameters.

Background Data: Alveolar healing following tooth extraction is a complex repair process involving different types of tissues, including epithelium and bone. Therefore, it can be advantageous to use techniques able to influence the healing of all tissues.

Introduction: Use of proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in children has increased enormously. However, effectiveness and safety of PPIs for pediatric GERD are under debate.

Objectives: We performed a systematic review to determine effectiveness and safety of PPIs in children with GERD.

Alveolar healing following tooth extraction is a complex repair process involving different tissues, including epithelium and bone. This research aimed to study the effect of laser therapy on alveolar healing process in patients waiting for liver transplantation, evaluating some inflammation, osteogenesis, and clinical parameters. Twelve patients with hepatic failure waiting for liver transplantation, with indications to bilateral extraction, entered the split-mouth study.

Purpose: More cases of osteonecrosis of the jaws in patients treated with intravenous bisphosphonates have been reported. The aim of this prospective hospital-based study was to detail a surgical protocol for teeth extraction in such patients.

Patients And Methods: Prospective patients with a follow-up of at least 4 months were included.

Design: Systematic review of studies of inter-rater reliability.

Participants: Individuals with and without lower extremity disorders.

Outcome Measures: Range of motion and end-feel using methods feasible in daily practice.

Extraction of an impacted mandibular third molar is a common surgical procedure, although it still leads to several postoperative symptoms and complications. The study assessed the efficacy of autologous plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF) in the healing process by checking the difference of tissue cytokines and other healing factors produced by the mucosa after extraction between sites treated with PRGF and control sites and, at the same time, by evaluating the clinical efficacy of PRGF in terms of reduced pain and facial swelling. This study was a split-mouth study, in which the patient becomes his/her own control, to eliminate any individual response differences toward PRGF treatment.

Aim: This study was designed to determine the effect of treating hemorrhoids with the Doppler-guided hemorrhoidal artery ligation (DG-HAL) procedure.

Methods: From June 2005 to March 2008, 244 consecutive hemorrhoidal patients underwent hemorroidal artery ligation performed with the DG-HAL system from AMI. All patients were evaluated postoperatively with a proctologic examination and interview.

We compared the clinical performance of the PapilloCheck human papillomavirus (HPV) assay with that of the GP5+/6+-PCR method with an enzyme immunoassay readout (GP5+/6+-PCR-EIA) for the detection of high-risk HPV (hrHPV) types by the use of cervical samples originating from women in a population-based by the use of cervical screening cohort tested by combined cytology and GP5+/6+-PCR-EIA (POBASCAM trial). Specimens from a random sample of 1,437 controls (women ages 40 to 60 years with normal cytological findings and without evidence of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 or higher [> or = CIN2] within up to 8 years of follow-up) and 192 cases (women ages 30 to 60 years in whom > or = CIN3 was detected within up to 3 years of follow-up) were subjected to analysis by the PapilloCheck method. When all 17 (probably) hrHPV types were taken into account, the PapilloCheck assay had a clinical sensitivity for the detection of > or = CIN3 of 96.

Background And Objective: Laser therapy is a new approach applicable in different medical fields when bone loss occurs, including orthopedics and dentistry. It has also been used to induce soft-tissue healing, for pain relief, bone, and nerve regeneration. With regard to bone synthesis, laser exposure has been shown to increase osteoblast activity and decrease osteoclast number, by inducing alkaline phosphatase (ALP), osteopontin, and bone sialoprotein expression.

Background: With an incidence of less than 5%, type II paraesophageal hernias are one of the less common types of hiatal hernias. We report a case of a perforated prepyloric gastric ulcer which, due to a type II hiatus hernia, drained into the mediastinum.

Case Presentation: A 61-year old Caucasian man presented with acute abdominal pain.

This study examines a pilot school-based treatment program for American Indian adolescents residing on a reservation who presented with symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and symptoms of depression. This is the first study directed at treating American Indian children with trauma; seven case studies demonstrate our findings that a manualized cognitive behavior therapy intervention delivered in group format for 10 weeks has potential for helping some children who experience PTSD symptoms and depression. The findings generally replicate previous research conducted with groups of non-Indian adolescents in urban settings.

Staging by sentinel node (SN) biopsy is the standard procedure for clinically node-negative breast cancer patients. Intra-operative analysis of the SN allows immediate axillary lymph node (ALN) dissection in SN positive patients, but a quick, reliable and reproducible method is lacking. We tested the suitability of a quantitative cytokeratin 19 (CK19) mRNA one step nucleic acid amplification (OSNA#) technique (OSNA-CK19) for intra-operative SN analysis.

A method for structure validation based on the simultaneous analysis of a 1D (1)H NMR and 2D (1)H - (13)C single-bond correlation spectrum such as HSQC or HMQC is presented here. When compared with the validation of a structure by a 1D (1)H NMR spectrum alone, the advantage of including a 2D HSQC spectrum in structure validation is that it adds not only the information of (13)C shifts, but also which proton shifts they are directly coupled to, and an indication of which methylene protons are diastereotopic. The lack of corresponding peaks in the 2D spectrum that appear in the 1D (1)H spectrum, also gives a clear picture of which protons are attached to heteroatoms.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assays that use consensus primers to detect DNA of a broad spectrum of human papillomavirus (HPV) types in a single assay belong to the most frequently used methods to detect HPV in clinical specimens. Here, we describe in detail one of these assays, the so-called GP5+/6+ PCR method, which can be used to detect and type HPV DNA in crude extracts of cervical scrapes and biopsy specimens. Following PCR with GP5+ and GP6+ primers, the latter of which is biotinylated at its 5' end, the presence of DNA of any of the high-risk genotypes can easily be determined by an enzyme immunoassay (EIA).

The beta and gamma genera of papillomaviruses consist of epidermodysplasia verruciformis-related human papillomaviruses (HPVs) and phylogenetically related cutaneous HPVs. Here, we have developed a consensus primer PCR assay and reverse line blot typing system coupled thereto (referred to as beta and gamma cutaneous HPV PCR [BGC-PCR]) for detection and typing of 24 beta and gamma HPVs (HPV types 4, 5, 8, 9, 12, 14, 15, 17, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 36, 37, 38, 47, 48, 49, 50, 60, and 65). Because the HPV-specific PCR products are only 72 bp in size, the system is suitable for formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded specimens and other samples in which the DNA is of suboptimal quality.
