Article Synopsis
  • - Cationic antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) show potential as both antimicrobial and anticancer agents, and linking them to bioactive molecules may enhance their effectiveness in treating cancer.
  • - In this study, two derivatives of usnic acid were combined with the AMP L-K6 using a new bonding method while both components demonstrated selective activity against cancer cells, specifically targeting the DNA repair enzyme TDP1.
  • - The resulting conjugates showed a range of effects, from decreased activity of the original drugs to increased cytotoxicity against glioblastoma cells, suggesting enhanced therapeutic potential compared to the individual components.

A large series of 2-arylchromen-4-ones containing from 1 to 3 fluorine atoms or a trifluoromethyl group in the structure was synthesized by condensation of fluorinated 2-hydroxyacetophenones with benzaldehydes in an alkaline medium and subsequent oxidative cyclization of the resulting 2'-hydroxychalcones by action of I in DMSO. The cytotoxicity of the obtained compounds was studied in glioblastoma cell line, SNB19, and in a monkey-derived normal kidney epithelium cell line, Vero. In addition, antiglycation activity of the obtained compounds was evaluated.

Aim: to determine the efficiency of different doses of erythropoietin and carbamylated darbepoetin, to prove experimentally the possibility of increasing the efficiency of carbamylated darbepoetin when using the levorotatory stereoisomer of ethoxidol.

Materials And Methods: On the model of ischemia-reperfusion injury in male CD-1 mice that were undergone to contralateral nephrectomy, the nephroprotective effect of different doses of erythropoietin alfa, carbamylated darbepoetin, L-ethoxidol (the levorotatory enantiomer of ethylmethylhydroxypyridine malate), and the combined use of L-ethapylated carboxypyridine malate and L-etapoietin alfa was studied. The parameters of microcirculation and glomerular filtration rate were studied one day after 30-minute ischemia.

A possible ability of twelve new derivatives of known antioxidants trolox (TroH), trolox succinate (TroS), α-tocopheryl succinate (α-TOS) containing nitroxyl radicals (1-12) to protect bacterial cells from spontaneous and peroxide-induced mutagenesis and their cytotoxicity against six different tumor cells as well as two normal cells were investigated and compared with that for TroH, TroS, α-TOH, and α-TOS for the first time. In contrast to TroH and TroS, all nitroxide derivatives 1-12 demonstrated not only antioxidant properties, but also suppress the growth of human tumor cells: myeloma, mammary adenocarcinoma, hepatocarcinoma, T cells leukemia, histiocytic lymphoma, and T-cellular leucosis. The IC50 values (24 - ≥ 300 μM) depend significantly on the compounds and type of tumor cells.

Twenty-one phenolic compounds (1-21) including dihydrocinnamic acid, isoflavonoids, flavonoids, coumestans, pterocarpans, chalcones, isoflavan and isoflaven, were isolated from the roots of Glycyrrhiza pallidiflora Maxim. Phloretinic acid (1), chrysin (6), 9-methoxycoumestan (8), isoglycyrol (9), 6″-O-acetylanonin (19) and 6″-O-acetylwistin (21) were isolated from G. pallidiflora for the first time.

Article Synopsis
  • A series of new compounds called 2-(4-R-triazolyl)substituted 3-oxo-2,3-dihydrofurocoumarins were created using a special chemical reaction involving azidooreoselone and different alkynes, with copper and ascorbate in a specific solvent mixture.
  • These new compounds were tested for their ability to kill cancer cells, with most showing better cytotoxic effects than the original natural furocoumarin called peucedanin.
  • The research also explored the potential of these compounds as inhibitors of a specific enzyme (PDE-4B), identifying three promising candidates with strong binding energy through virtual screening.

A series of secondary amines combining monoterpenoid and aminoadamantane moieties have been synthesized. Their cytotoxic activity against human cancer cells CEM-13, MT-4, and U-937 has been studied for the first time. Most of the obtained compounds exhibited a significant cytotoxic activity with the median cytotoxic dose (CTD50) ranging from 6 to 84 µM.

A simple and efficient method for synthesizing chiral heterocyclic compounds with the hexahydrofluoreno[9,1-bc]furan framework via interaction between trans-4-hydroxymethyl-2-carene and aromatic aldehydes containing methoxy and hydroxyl moieties in the presence of montmorillonite clay was found. One of the synthesized compounds exhibited a high cytotoxic activity against lymphoblastoid cell line MT-4 (CTD50 0.9μM), which was higher than that of the comparative drug Doxorubicin.

A series of new analogs of combretastatin A-4 (CA-4, 1) with the A or B-ring replaced by a 3-oxo-2,3-dihydrofurocoumarin or a furocoumarin residue have been designed and synthesized by employing a cross-coupling approach. All the compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxic activity with respect to model cancer cell lines (CEM-13, MT-4, U-937) using conventional MTT assays. Structure-activity relationship analysis reveals that compounds 2, 3, 6-8 in which the (Z)-styryl substituent was connected to the 2-position of the 3-oxo-2,3-dihydrofurocoumarin core, demonstrated increased potency compared to 3-(Z)-styrylfurocoumarins 4, 5, 9-11.

L-arginine (200 mg/kg), vitamin B(6) (2 mg/kg), and folic acid (0.2 mg/kg) exert a protective effect on endothelial function in L-NAME-induced NO deficiency in male and pregnant female Wistar rats. Combined administration of these agents effectively prevented the development of endothelial dysfunction and L-NAME-induced preeclampsia.
