Objective: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the inter-judge and intra-judge reliability of raters using the Voice-Vibratory Assessment with Laryngeal Imaging (VALI) rating form that was developed for assessing videostroboscopy and high-speed videoendoscopic (HSV) recordings.

Subjects And Methods: Nine speech-language pathologists with an average of 12.8 years of experience with laryngeal imaging were trained to use the VALI form for rating 66 de-identified and randomized samples with voice disorders.

Purpose: This study investigated nasalance in speakers from six different dialectal regions across North America using recent versions of the Nasometer. It was hypothesized that many of the sound changes observed in regional dialects of North American English would have a significant impact on measures of nasalance.

Method: Samples of the Zoo Passage, the Rainbow Passage, and the Nasal Sentences were collected from young adult male and female speakers (N=300) from six North American dialectical regions (Midland/Mid-Atlantic; Inland North Canada; Inland North; North Central; South; and Western dialects).

A newly developed stroboscopy rating form is presented. The evolution of the new form is discussed by focusing on how problems with another commonly used form led to its development. Interjudge agreement and intrajudge reliability data for the new rating form reveal that the parameters of phase closure, phase symmetry, and phase regularity remain difficult to rate even with the revised rating form.

Methods of training individuals to rate stroboscopic examinations vary widely in rating criteria, viewing times, samples, and length of training. Consequently, problems occur in both inter- and intrajudge agreement. Computer-aided instruction (CAI) provides a means to integrate and control key learning factors that facilitate learning.
