Article Synopsis
  • * Forty-three patients underwent bowel resection, with serum samples taken at various intervals to measure cytokine levels and clinical data, revealing significant correlations between abdominal wound length, operation time, first flatus passage, and hospital stay.
  • * Results showed that a shorter abdominal wound (less than 7 cm) was associated with quicker recovery times, less postoperative IL-6 increase, and an overall better recovery experience, highlighting the benefits of mini-laparotomy in CRC surgeries.

Article Synopsis
  • Marginally low birth weight (MLBW) is defined as a birth weight between 2000 and 2499 grams, and there's been uncertainty about its impact on children's neurological and cognitive health.
  • This study analyzed data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (2008-2018) to assess the risk of psychiatric disorders in term-born children with MLBW compared to those with normal weight (≥2500 g).
  • Findings revealed that term-born MLBW infants had significantly higher rates of psychiatric disorders, such as ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, and conduct disorder, indicating a need for focused mental health resources for these children.

Background: Neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy (NCRT) followed by surgery is the standard treatment for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC); approximately 80% of patients do not achieve complete response. Identifying prognostic factors predictive of survival in these patients to guide further management is needed. The intratumoural lymphocytic response (ILR), peritumoural lymphocytic reaction (PLR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PtLR) are correlated with the tumour microenvironment and cancer-related systemic inflammation.
