We hypothesise that the differential expression of IL-17 contributes to variable corticosteroid sensitivity in different interstitial lung diseases.
Objective: To determine the associations among expression of IL-17, glucocorticoid receptor-β and responsiveness to corticosteroid treatment in interstitial lung diseases.
Background: The circulating progenitor cells of fibroblasts (fibrocytes) have been shown to infiltrate the airway smooth muscle compartment of asthma patients; however, the pathological significance of this discovery has yet to be elucidated. This study established a co-culture model of airway smooth muscle cells (ASMCs) and fibrocytes from asthmatic or normal subjects to evaluate innate cytokine production, corticosteroid responses, and signaling in ASMCs.
Methods: CD34 fibrocytes were purified from peripheral blood of asthmatic (Global Initiative for Asthma treatment step 4-5) and normal subjects and cultured for 5∼7 days.
An effective antiseptic agent is an essential component of a central venous catheter (CVC) care bundle, to protect against catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs). We conducted a trial to compare the incidences of CRBSI and the growth of insertion site flora in patients with CVC using 2% chlorhexidine gluconate−alcohol (CHG) or 10% povidone-iodine−alcohol (PVI) in the CVC care bundle. Background And Objective: Overexpression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 has been demonstrated in asthma, and MMP polymorphisms are known to enhance disease susceptibility. We investigated whether MMP-1 polymorphism is associated with persistent airway obstruction in asthma in the Taiwanese population.
Methods: A total of 131 unrelated Taiwanese subjects were enrolled, age-matched, and divided as follows: (1) those who had asthma with persistent airway obstruction with forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV(1)) and FEV(1)/forced vital capacity (FVC) values less than 75% predicted (n = 41); (2) those with asthma without airway obstruction with FEV(1) and FEV(1)/FVC values > or = 75% predicted (n = 47); and (3) normal control subjects (n = 43).
