Background: Alerts in computerized physician order entry (CPOE) systems can improve patient safety. However, alerts in rule-based systems cannot be customized based on individual patient or user characteristics. However, this is not readily available in most homegrown Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) systems.
Objective: To present a novel method that can collect alert information from a homegrown CPOE system (at an academic medical center in Taiwan) and conduct a comprehensive analysis of the number of alerts triggered and alert characteristics.

We used a large cohort data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Data Base (NHIRDB) and identified 9,693 (9, 348) patients from January 1998 to December 2010, admitted for thyroid disorder surgeries.
