Article Synopsis
  • Floods in Thailand often lead to skin diseases, particularly infectious dermatoses like eczema and fungal infections, but microbiological causes have not been thoroughly studied.
  • A study evaluated 96 patients with skin issues during a flood in October 2006, finding eczema was the most common, especially irritant contact dermatitis, with a subset of patients also experiencing skin maceration in toe web spaces.
  • The majority of infections were due to various Gram-negative bacilli, with only a few fungal cases; the study emphasizes the need for appropriate topical treatments that address inflammation and bacterial and fungal infections, even though microbiological testing isn't always feasible during floods.
