Contact dermatitis from dibutylthiourea. Report of a case with fine structural observations of epicutaneous testing with dibutylthiourea.

A 35-year-old machinist developed hand eczema from contact allergy to dibutylthiourea, a compound found in a paint and glue remover. Light and electron microscopy of his positive patch test was consistent with allergic contact dermatitis, showing Langerhans cell-mononuclear cell contacts in the epidermis.

The effect of beta-carotene in combination with canthaxanthin, Ro 8-8427 (Phenoro), in treatment of polymorphous light eruptions.

50 patients with polymorphous light eruptions with treated with a beta-carotene-canthaxanthin combination, Ro 8-8427 (Phenoro) at a daily dose of 100 mg or placebo for a duration of 10 weeks in a double-blind, randomized, cross-over trial. The effect of treatment was evaluated clinically on the basis of occurrence of pruritus, erythema and eruptions as well as subjectively through the patients own opinion about the condition of their skin. Excellent results after treatment with Ro 8-8427 were achieved in 27 cases and good results in 9, regardless of whether this preparation was the first treatment or the second.

Genetic determination of lipopolysaccharide: locus of O-specific unit polymerase in group E of salmonella.

By genetic analysis of a semirough mutant of Salmonella muenster we show that a gene determining the polymerization of the repeating units of the O-3, 10-type lipopolysaccharide side chain in Salmonella of group E resides in the his-linked rfb cluster.

Effect of enterobacterial common antigen on mouse virulence of Salmonella typhimurium.

A series of nearly isogenic O4-12, and O-6,7 Salmonella typhimurium strains differing in regard to the enterobacterial common antigen (ECA) were constructed by conjugation. When tested in intraperitoneal infection of mice, the O-4,12 strains containing ECA were more virulent than their O-4,12 sister recombinants without ECA (P = less than 0.001).

Effect of the quality of the lipopolysaccharide on mouse virulence of Salmonella enteritidis.

The cell wall O antigen is known to affect mouse virulence of Salmonella. We have shown earlier that S. typhimurium expressing somatic antigen 9,12 is less virulent than its 4,12 sister transductants in mice after intraperitoneal inoculation, suggesting that the 4,12-type O antigen is connected with high virulence in mice.
