Orthopedic implants made of biodegradable magnesium (Mg) provide an alternative to nondegradable implants for fracture repair. Widely reported to be pro-osteogenic, Mg implants are also believed to be anti-inflammatory and anti-osteoclastic, but this is difficult to reconcile with the early clinical inflammation observed around these implants. Here, by surveying implant healing in a rat bone model, we determined the cellular responses and structural assembly of bone correlated with the surface changes of Mg implants inherent in degradation.

In this study, the interaction of pure Mg and WE43 alloy under the presence of osteoblast (OB) and osteoclast (OC) cells and their influence on the degradation of materials have been deeply analyzed. Since OB and OC interaction has an important role in bone remodeling, we examined the surface morphology and dynamic changes in the chemical composition and thickness of the corrosion layers formed on pure Mg and WE43 alloy by direct monoculture and coculture of pre-differentiated OB and OC cells in vitro. Electrochemical techniques examined the corrosion performance.

Our study reports the ultrasound-assisted synthesis of SnS and SnS in the form of nanoparticles using aqueous solutions of respective tin chloride and thioacetamide varying sonication time. The presence of both compounds is confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, as well as Raman and FT-IR spectroscopic techniques. The existence of nanoparticles is proven by powder X-ray diffraction investigation and by high resolution transmission electron microscopy observations.

Implants made of magnesium (Mg) are increasingly employed in patients to achieve osteosynthesis while degrading . Since Mg implants and Mg have been suggested to possess anti-inflammatory properties, the clinically observed soft tissue inflammation around Mg implants is enigmatic. Here, using a rat soft tissue model and a 1-28 d observation period, we determined the temporo-spatial cell distribution and behavior in relation to sequential changes of pure Mg implant surface properties and Mg release.

Samples of 316L SS were manufactured by Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS) using different technological parameters. The deposited samples were investigated in terms of microstructure, mechanical properties, phase content and corrosion resistance (salt chamber and electrochemical corrosion). Parameters were chosen to obtain a proper sample built for layer thicknesses of 0.

Article Synopsis
  • Biological methods for silver nanocomposite synthesis promote environmentally-friendly practices but face limitations, such as the unintended formation of silver chlorides during the process.
  • The research emphasizes using bioactive sources like milk to isolate lactobacillus strains (Lactobacillus curvatus and Lactobacillus fermentum) for synthesizing various biosilver nanocomposites.
  • Two innovative mediation methods, "direct method" and "modified method," were developed, leading to the successful synthesis of three types of nanocomposites, with findings illustrating their complex structures and the role of organic molecules secreted by the lactobacillus strains in the reduction of silver ions.

Magnesium (Mg)-based implants are promising candidates for orthopedic interventions, because of their biocompatibility, good mechanical features, and ability to degrade completely in the body, eliminating the need for an additional removal surgery. In the present study, we synthesized and investigated two Mg-based materials, ultrahigh-purity ZX00 (Mg-Zn-Ca; <0.5 wt% Zn and <0.

The objective of the present work was to evaluate the effects of different types of particles added to a polymer paste applied onto a textile carrier on the cut resistance of the resulting material. Knitted aramid textile samples were coated in laboratory conditions using a polymer paste that was functionalized with 12 types of reinforcing particles of different chemical compositions and size fractions. Cut resistance was tested in accordance with the standard EN ISO 13997:1999 and the results were subjected to statistical analysis.

Bismuth sesquioxide ([Formula: see text]) draws much attention due to wide variety of phases in which it exists depending on the temperature. Among them, [Formula: see text] phase is specially interesting because of its high oxide ion conductivity and prospects of applications as an electrolyte in fuel cells. Unfortunately, it is stable only in a narrow temperature range ca.

Sonochemical production of tin(II) and tin(IV) sulfides is investigated. Different conditions of syntheses are examined: used solvent (ethanol or ethylenediamine), source of tin (SnCl or SnCl), the molar ratio of thioacetamide to the tin source, and time of sonication. The obtained powders are characterized by the X-ray diffraction method (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and the Tauc method.

The effects of exposure to overheating (temperature above 1000 °C) on the degradation (modification) of layers of coatings (coatings based on aluminum) of uncooled polycrystalline rotor blades of aircraft turbine jet engines were investigated under laboratory conditions. In order to determine the nature of the changes as well as the structural changes in the various zones, a multi-factor analysis of the layers of the coating, including the observation of the surface of the blades, using, among others, electron microscopy, structural tests, surface morphology, and chemical composition testing, was carried out. As a result of the possibility of strengthening the physical foundations of the non-destructive testing of blades, the undertaken research mainly focused on the characteristics of the changes occurring in the outermost layers of the coatings.

In this work we show that ordered freestanding titanium oxide nanotubes (TiO NT) may be used as substrates for the simple and efficient immobilization of anisotropic plasmonic nanoparticles. This is important because anisotropic plasmonic nanostructures usually give greater spectral enhancement than spherical nanoparticles. The size of the pores in a layer of titanium oxide nanotubes can be easily fitted to the size of many silver plasmonic nanoparticles highly active in SERS (surface-enhanced Raman scattering) spectroscopy (for example, silver nanocubes with an edge length of ca.

A hybrid process that combines oxidation under glow-discharge conditions with ion beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) has been applied to mechanically polished NiTi shape memory alloy in order to produce composite surface layers consisting of a TiO layer and an external carbon coating with an addition of silver. The produced surface layers a-C(Ag) + TiO type have shown increased surface roughness, improved corrosion resistance, altered wettability, and surface free energy, as well as reduced platelet adhesion, aggregation, and activation in comparison to NiTi alloy in initial state. Such characteristics can be of great benefit for cardiac applications.
