Understanding the relationships between motor proficiency (MP) and physical fitness (PF) is important for the future health of children, although longitudinal findings of this nature are limited. This study explored the association between MP and PF during earlier childhood (6 and 9 years old) and later childhood (12 years old) in boys and girls. A stratified and randomized research design including a baseline and two follow-up time-point measures (2010, 2013, and 2016) were used.

Congenital nephrogenic diabetes insipidus treated with acetazolamide.

Congenital nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (CNDI) is a rare disorder. The condition is characterised by an inability of distal nephron segments to respond to normal or raised concentrations of serum antidiuretic hormone. In this report, we describe the case of a 13-year-old male known with CNDI who experienced a pedestrian vehicle accident leading to coma following a head injury.

Deeply jaundiced: Not so surgical after all.

Unlabelled: Leptospirosis is an under-recognised disease in sub-Saharan Africa and the diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion. This case report highlights the protean manifestations of leptospirosis. Leptospirosis should be considered in any patient presenting with fever and jaundice, especially when there has been a history of occupational or recreational exposure to water, soil or rodents.

Mild Biceps Tendonitis May Be Managed Nonoperatively During Shoulder Arthroscopy.

Purpose: The purposes of this study were to determine whether patients with mild biceps tendonitis required revision surgery after the biceps tendon was not surgically treated, while addressing concomitant pathology, and to evaluate whether preoperative groove pain affected patient-reported outcomes.

Methods: Patients who underwent shoulder arthroscopy between 2015 and 2018 by a single surgeon for rotator cuff pathology, debridement, and distal clavicular excision (DCE), with or without subacromial decompression (SAD), and where the biceps tendon was not surgically addressed were retrospectively identified. Inclusion criteria were mild LS (<50% hyperemic appearing biceps tendon arthroscopically), and a minimum 2-year follow-up.

Cutaneous tuberculosis: An infrequent manifestation of a common pathogen in South Africa.

Methods: This prospective cohort study included all players and caddies participating in two large professional golf events from 7 to 20 February 2022 in South Africa. Fully vaccinated persons testing positive who were asymptomatic were subject to risk assessment and risk reduction measures to protect the integrity of the event.

Longitudinal Effects of Excessive Weight and Obesity on Academic Performance of Primary School Boys in Different Socio-Economic Statuses: The NW-CHILD Study.

Obesity affects millions of children worldwide and can often impact their academic performance. This longitudinal study, conducted over seven years, determines the effects of excessive weight and obesity on the academic performance of primary school boys, taking into account their socio-economic status (SES). The study forms part of a seven-year (2010-2016) longitudinal study, the North-West Child-Health-Integrated-Learning and Development (NW-CHILD) study, which includes a baseline measurement and two follow-up measurements of the 181 participants from varying areas in the North West Province.

High grade renal trauma: Does the mechanism of penetrating injury influence renal salvage rate?

Background: Most of the data on high grade Traumatic renal injuries (TRI) has come from centres which predominantly encounter blunt trauma. Blunt and penetrating mechanisms are not analogous, and it is imprudent to blindly extrapolate management strategies between the two groups. In addition, within the broad group of penetrating mechanisms of injury there are also major differences between gunshot wounds (GSW) and stab wounds (SW).

The aim of this study was to provide a detailed anatomical description of the abdomen in the clinically normal common marmoset by means of computed tomography (CT). Eight clinically healthy mature common marmosets ranging from 12 to 48 months and 235 to 365 g bodyweight were anesthetized and pre- and post-contrast CT examinations were performed using different CT settings in dorsal recumbency. Abdominal organs were identified and visibility noted.

Praziquantel treatment for species infection of a domestic cat on St Kitts, West Indies.

Case Summary: A 1-year-old, female spayed, domestic shorthair, indoor cat on the island of St Kitts was diagnosed with platynosomiasis, infection with a feline-specific liver fluke, and treated with praziquantel at the marketed dose for tapeworms (5 mg/kg; actual calculated dose 5.75 mg/kg). Serial fecal analyses showed that egg counts decreased to zero within 10 days of treatment but re-emerged at day 17 and persisted at low levels until a second treatment was administered on day 78.
