Vibrio cholerae 01 was detected from aquarium water and fish imported from Thailand and Sri Lanka. The infected fish were treated with antibiotics and the tanks and other aquatics were decontaminated. None of the persons taking care of the infected fish became ill; bacteriological analyses of fecal specimens of these persons were negative.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn a group of student volunteers vaccinated at the age of 13-17 years with vaccine produced by SmithKline Beecham Biologicals which contains the live attenuated strain of the Oka virus of varicella zoster the period of the protective effect of vaccination was assessed. In the course of 310,000 man-days of detailed investigation the authors revealed in 55 vaccinated subjects close exposure to a patient with varicella, and six of the vaccinated subjects contracted the disease after exposure. In the course of the subsequent three years no further case of varicella was recorded.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn the course of 20 years in collaboration with dermatologists and doctors attending adolescents 75 patients were treated suffering for at least four years from 10 relapses of herpes labialis or genitalis every year. The usual treatment mitigated only temporarily their complaints but had no effect on the frequency of relapses. Two thirds of the patients had immunological examinations, in half of them shortage of IgA was found.

On the example of existing information systems of communicable diseases the authors analyze the possibilities of and draw attention to the obstacles of their wider use. The following information systems are involved: ARO (acute respiratory diseases), APO (acute diarrhoeal diseases), ISBT (information system of bacillary tuberculosis), ISPO (information system of communicable diseases), ISID (information system of child immunization). In the general evaluation the authors draw attention to the demand to do away with the scattered character of the system and the necessity of delimitation of the responsibility for the establishment and operation of the information systems.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA group of 251 children aged 2-3 years given live attenuated mumps virus vaccine PAVIVAC of Czechoslovak production were tested for antiparotitis antibody levels in pre- and postvaccination sera by neutralization test (NT), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and sensitive hemagglutination inhibition test, enhanced by heterologous antibody to human immunoglobulin G (E-HIT). The prevaccination findings were as follows: positive ELISA IgG titres, neutralization antibodies and hemagglutination inhibition antibodies were present in, respectively, 35%, 25.9% and 27.
