Emerging zoonotic diseases have increased in importance in human and animal health during the last 10 years. Each of these diseases has emerged from an unsuspected quarter and has caused severe problems. In countries, such as Venezuela, the burden of these zoonoses has been understudied.

Unlabelled: In the study we show the usefulness of PCR (polymerase chain reaction) to follow patients with chronic hepatitis, infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) of Centro Médico de Caracas. The study included 14 patients: 12 anti-HCV positive, 1 with chronic autoimmune hepatitis and 1 classified as non B-non C hepatitis. The patients were divided in 3 groups: Group 1 (5 pretreatment patients, anti-HCV+), 4 with increase in ALT and PCR positive, 1 with normal ALT and PCR negative.

ERCP was performed in two infants (29 and 62 days old) and eight children (5 to 12 years old) with jaundice due to common bile duct stones. Seven patients had hemolytic anemia and three patients had a family history of gallstone disease. Successful cannulation of the common bile duct demonstrating stones was accomplished in all patients.

This study assessed the usefulness of ERCP in the diagnosis of biliary atresia. We evaluated 57 infants with prolonged cholestasis with abdominal ultrasound, liver biopsy, and ERCP. Using clinical observations alone, 22 infants were thought to have biliary atresia; whereas 35 children were thought to have neonatal hepatitis.
