There is a spotlight on mental health, with government initiatives in Australia highlighting the importance of, and need for, greater focus on psychological wellbeing and on addressing psychosocial hazards at work. The growing body of evidence in Australia and internationally suggests that the mental health and wellbeing of lawyers is adversely affected by their work. This cross-disciplinary evidence highlights the need for mental health concerns to be addressed systemically to prevent psychosocial injury and for tailored, proactive psychological support services in the legal environment.

Accuracy of the HPV status site-specific factor 10 (SSF-10) variable for patients with oropharyngeal cancers in the Iowa Cancer Registry, 2010-2014.

Background: Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Cancer Registries (SEER) began collecting human papillomavirus (HPV) status for upper aerodigestive tract cancers in 2010. However, classification of p16-testing was not included in the Collaborative Stage coding guidelines, potentially leading to inconsistent coding.

Methods: The HPV values for Iowa patients with oropharyngeal cancers (n = 824) were recoded based on modified guidelines that included p16 test results, and compared with the original guidelines.

Background: The night clinic which is part of the psychiatric department of the University of Zurich is a part-time treatment option with psychiatric treatment and support in the evening. This study aimed to characterize the patients and detect different functions of the treatment setting.

Methods: Data of 253 patients covering a six-year period from 2008 up to 2013 were retrospectively assessed using descriptive methods.

Characterization of two MODY2 mutations with different susceptibility to activation.

Glucokinase plays a key role in glucose sensing in pancreatic beta cells and in liver metabolism. Heterozygous inactivating glucokinase mutations cause the autosomal dominantly inherited MODY2 subtype of maturity-onset diabetes of the young. The goal of this study was to elucidate the pathogenicity of the recently described glucokinase mutants L304P and L315H, located in an alpha-helix and connecting region, respectively, at the outer region of the large domain of glucokinase.

What increased registry outreach may mean for cutaneous melanoma surveillance: impact of changes in Iowa.

Background: Cutaneous melanoma (CM) is underreported to cancer registries, in part due to insufficient reporting in the nonhospital setting. The objective of this study was to better understand the impact of dermatologist and private pathology laboratory reporting on CM rates.

Methods: We examined the impact of targeted casefinding in private pathology laboratories and dermatology offices by the State Health Registry of Iowa (SHRI) on CM incidence, as well as the characteristics of nonhospital reported cases.

Agreement for tumor grade of ovarian carcinoma: analysis of archival tissues from the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results residual tissue repository.

Background: Emerging data suggest that ovarian cancers differ by tumor grade. However, the reliability of microscopic grade from paraffin tissue in the general medical community and as reflected in population-based cancer registries is unknown.

Methods: We examined grade agreement between two gynecologic pathologists and the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results Residual Tissue Repository (SEER).

Rubin H. Flocks and colloidal gold treatments for prostate cancer.

In the early 1950s, Rubin H. Flocks of the University of Iowa began to treat prostate cancer patients with colloidal gold (Au(198)) therapy, evolving his technique over nearly 25 years in 1515 patients. We reviewed the long-term outcomes of Flocks' prostate cancer patients as compared to those patients treated by other methods at the University of Iowa before Flocks' chairmanship.

Small intestinal cancer: a population-based study of incidence and survival patterns in the United States, 1992 to 2006.

Background: The etiology of cancers of the small intestine is largely unknown. To gain insight into these rare malignancies, we evaluated contemporaneous incidence and survival patterns.

Methods: Using small intestine cancer data from 12 population-based registries of the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Program, we calculated age-adjusted and age-specific incidence rates (IRs), IR ratios, and relative survival (RS) rates.

The occurrence of rare cancers in U.S. adults, 1995-2004.

Objective: Rare cancers have been traditionally understudied, reducing the progress of research and hindering decisions for patients, physicians, and policy makers. We evaluated the descriptive epidemiology of rare cancers using a large, representative, population-based dataset from cancer registries in the United States.

Methods: We analyzed more than 9 million adult cancers diagnosed from 1995 to 2004 in 39 states and two metropolitan areas using the Cancer in North America (CINA) dataset, which covers approximately 80% of the U.

Help-seeking pathways in early psychosis.

Introduction: Understanding the help-seeking pathways of patients with a putative risk of developing psychosis helps improving development of specialised care services. This study aimed at obtaining information about: type of health professionals contacted by patients at putative risk for psychosis on their help-seeking pathways; number of contacts; type of symptoms leading to contacts with health professionals; interval between initial contact and referral to a specialised outpatient service.

Method: The help-seeking pathways were assessed as part of a prospective study in 104 patients with suspected at-risk states for psychosis.

Probability-based differential normalized fluorescence bivariate analysis for the classification of tissue autofluorescence spectra.

Differential normalized fluorescence (DNF) is an efficient and effective method for the differentiation of normal and cancerous tissue fluorescence spectra. The diagnostic features are extracted from the difference between the averaged cancerous and averaged normal tissue spectra and used as indices in tissue classification. In this paper, a new method, probability-based DNF bivariate analysis, is introduced based on the univariate DNF method.

The frequency of ipsilateral second tumors after breast-conserving surgery for DCIS: a population based analysis.

Background: The diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is increasing, although to the authors' knowledge there is no consensus regarding optimal treatment. This analysis of women treated with breast-conserving surgery (BCS) evaluated the impact of radiation therapy (RT) in patient outcomes.

Methods: The current study included a population-based sample of 1103 women residing in selected Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registries who were diagnosed with DCIS between 1991-1992.

Correlation coefficient mapping in fluorescence spectroscopy: tissue classification for cancer detection.

Correlation coefficient mapping has been applied to intrinsic fluorescence spectra of colonic tissue for the purpose of cancer diagnosis. Fluorescence emission spectra were collected of 57 colonic tissue sites in a range of 4 physiological conditions: normal (29), hyperplastic (2), adenomatous (5), and cancerous tissues (21). The sample-sample correlation was used to examine the ability of correlation coefficient mapping to determine tissue disease state.

Lung cancer histologic type in the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results registry versus independent review.

Because few studies have assessed the accuracy of lung cancer histologic diagnoses reported by state cancer registries, we examined whether the Iowa Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Cancer Registry (i.e., the Iowa Cancer Registry)-reported lung cancer histologic diagnoses were reliable.

Interstitial thermal therapy in patients with localized prostate cancer: histologic analysis.

Objectives: To examine, by way of histologic examination, the destruction of excised prostate glands treated with thermal ablation. Thermal ablation treatment with permanently implanted temperature self-regulating rods is being used in the treatment of localized prostate cancer.

Methods: Four patients with biopsy-proven prostate cancer, who had been scheduled for routine radical prostatectomy with a gland size of less than 70 g, Gleason sum of 7 or less, and prostate-specific antigen values less than 10.

In vitro maintenance, cooling and cryopreservation of red wolf (Canis rufus) spermatozoa.

A current priority for the preservation of the endangered red wolf (Canis rufus) is the development of a sperm-based genome resource bank. The aims of this study were to examine the effects of (i) holding temperature on the motility of spermatozoa over time, and (ii) cooling methods on the characteristics of spermatozoa after cooling and cryopreservation. Electroejaculates (n = 11; fresh) were evaluated for the percentage of motile spermatozoa, cell and acrosome morphology (Spermac (Meditech 1st Canada Inc, Montreal, Ontario) and fluorescein isothiocyanate-labelled Pisum sativum agglutinin lectin (PSA/FITC; Sigma Diagnostics, Oakville, Ontario) staining), and zona penetration.

Use of permanent interstitial temperature self-regulating rods for ablation of prostate cancer.

Background And Purpose: We have examined a new technique for the thermal treatment of prostate cancer involving the percutaneous placement of small magnetic alloy rods into the gland in a procedure analogous to the placement of permanent brachytherapy seeds. When the patient and the implanted rods are placed in an extracorporeal alternating magnetic field, the rods heat and can produce tissue necrosis. The rods are temperature self-regulating and produce temperatures no higher than their preprogrammed regulation value.

Residential radon gas exposure and lung cancer: the Iowa Radon Lung Cancer Study.

Exposure to high concentrations of radon progeny (radon) produces lung cancer in both underground miners and experimentally exposed laboratory animals. To determine the risk posed by residential radon exposure, the authors performed a population-based, case-control epidemiologic study in Iowa from 1993 to 1997. Subjects were female Iowa residents who had occupied their current home for at least 20 years.

Procurement of population-based cancer tissue in Iowa.

We describe the first systematic survey of pathology laboratories serving Iowans to assess attitudes concerning assistance with cancer research efforts. Previous reports suggested that pathologists are reluctant to loan slides and/or paraffin tissue blocks for research purposes because of potential loss or damage, medicolegal concerns, or lack of compensation for time and effort spent in retrieving materials. In this study, we obtained survey responses from laboratory directors of 54 of the 56 pathology laboratories serving Iowans.

Semen parameters and electron microscope observations of spermatozoa of the red wolf, Canis rufus.

Semen parameters were evaluated on ejaculates of a captive population of red wolves (Canis rufus) sampled over two consecutive mating seasons. A total of 31 samples from 15 animals yielded mean sperm motility of 69.6 +/- 19.

Characteristics of fresh and frozen-thawed red wolf (Canis rufus) spermatozoa.

Ejaculates of the red wolf (Canis rufus) were evaluated immediately after collection and freeze-thawing to initiate a reproductive database for this endangered species. Electroejaculates from 13 adult red wolves collected during the breeding season (February-March; n=25; 1-3 collections/male) had a mean volume of 4.7+/-0.

Marked granulocytic proliferation induced by granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in the spleen simulating a myeloid leukemic infiltrate.

The authors describe a patient with a long-standing history of systemic lupus erythematosus and leukopenia who received multiple intermittent doses of recombinant granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and who underwent splenectomy because of a clinical impression of sequestration of granulocytes by the spleen. Histologic evaluation of the spleen revealed marked granulocytic hyperplasia with an increase in immature myeloid precursors, morphologically indistinguishable from a myeloid leukemic infiltrate. A postsplenectomy bone marrow aspirate and biopsy revealed a normocellular bone marrow with active hematopoiesis and trilineage maturation.
