A series of hydrophilic copolymers were prepared using 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and itaconic acid (IA) from free radical polymerization at different feed monomer ratios using ammonium persulfate (APS) initiators in water at 70 °C. The herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) was grafted to Poly(HEMA--IA) by a condensation reaction. The hydrolysis of the polymeric release system, Poly(HEMA--IA)-2,4-D, demonstrated that the release of the herbicide in an aqueous phase depends on the polymeric system's pH value and hydrophilic character.

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the efficacy of sodium lignosulfonate (LS) as a dye adsorbent in the removal of methylene blue (MB) from water by polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration. Various parameters were evaluated, such as membrane molecular weight cut-off, pH, LS dose, MB concentration, applied pressure, and the effect of interfering ions. The results showed that the use of LS generated a significant increase in MB removal, reaching an elimination of up to 98.

We used bench-scale tests and mathematical modeling to explore chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rates in a moving-bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) for winery wastewater treatment, using either urea or nitrate as a nitrogen source. With urea addition, the COD removal fluxes ranged from 34 to 45 gCOD/m-d. However, when nitrate was added, fluxes increased up to 65 gCOD/m-d, twice the amount reported for aerobic biofilms for winery wastewater treatment.

In skeletal muscle, the Ca release flux elicited by a voltage clamp pulse rises to an early peak that inactivates rapidly to a much lower steady level. Using a double pulse protocol the fast inactivation follows an arithmetic rule: if the conditioning depolarization is less than or equal to the test depolarization, then decay (peak minus steady level) in the conditioning release is approximately equal to suppression (unconditioned minus conditioned peak) of the test release. This is due to quantal activation by voltage, analogous to the quantal activation of IP3 receptor channels.
