Cord lipoma in minimally invasive surgical repairs of inguinal hernias: a prospective study.

Cord lipomas are frequent findings in laparoscopic inguinal hernia surgeries in male patients. The symptoms of lipoma and the potential benefits of removing them are often overlooked because the focus is on the primary pathology of the hernia itself. Current recommendations are to reduce this fatty content, when present.

Volumetry after botulinum toxin A: the impact on abdominal wall compliance and endotracheal pressure.

Purpose: Botulinum toxin type A (BTA) is an adjuvant tool used in the preoperative optimization of complex hernias before abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR). This study aims to investigate changes in the abdominal cavity and hernia sac dimensions after BTA application.

Method: A prospective study with 27 patients with a hernia defect of ≥ 10 cm and loss of domain (LOD) ≥ 20% underwent AWR.

Purpose: Surgical repair of large hernia defects requires detailed pre-operative planning, particularly in cases with loss of domain. Robotic re-TAPP: a minimally invasive alternative for the failed posterior repair.

Objective: to describe the use of the robotic platform in inguinal hernia recurrence after a previous laparoscopic repair.

Methods: patients with recurrent inguinal hernias following a laparoscopic repair who have undergone robotic transabdominal preperitoneal between December 2015 through September 2020 were identified in a prospectively maintained database. Reversal of unstable atrial fibrillation after surgical correction of hiatus hernia: A case report.

Introduction: The presence of Atrial Fibrillation (AF) with herniation of abdominal content through the esophageal hiatus can be explained by the compression of the cardiac tissue by the viscera and, consequently, of its electrical transmission network, compromising the correct propagation of stimuli. Due to the causal relationship, hernia correction is almost always able to reverse the arrhythmic picture.

Presentation Of The Case: A 75-year-old male with atrial fibrillation with a large hiatal hernia causing clinical decompensation was successfully treated after a laparocopic correction- primary closure of the defect was made with barbed surgical thread plus and placing a biological mesh (porcine small intestine submucosa, non-cross-linked), fixed with cyanoacrylate; after the procedure, he was discharged asymptomatic and with sinus heart rhythm.

Blunt gastric rupture: a plural clinical presentation and literature review.

Blunt trauma is still the leading mechanism of trauma found in patients admitted to trauma centres worldwide. In these patients, the gastric injury is a very rare lesion, occurring in less than 2% of all blunt traumas. Besides the low incidence, gastric rupture mortality is high, which makes the diagnosis an essential step.

Pancreatoduodenal Artery Aneurism rupture post colonoscopy - Case report.

Introduction: Complications related to colonoscopy is considered low and in most cases involves intestinal perforation. Vascular complications involving aneurysm rupture are rare in the literature and may occur after colonoscopy.

COVID-19 and Cytomegalovirus Co-infection: A Challenging Case of a Critically Ill Patient with Gastrointestinal Symptoms.

Unlabelled: COVID-19 is a severe disease that has reached pandemic status. To the best of our knowledge, we describe the first case of COVID-19 and cytomegalovirus (CMV) co-infection in a critically ill patient. We discuss the challenge of establishing the diagnosis as well as the management of tissue-invasive gastrointestinal CMV infection (TI-GI CMV) simulating vascular involvement and intestinal obstruction in a critically ill patient.

Hepatic subcapsular hematoma post-ERCP: Case report and literature review.

Introduction: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is one of the most frequently performed minimally invasive procedures currently available for diagnosis and treatment of biliary and pancreatic diseases. Though considered a safe procedure, it has the highest rate of complications among the other endoscopic procedures, such as duodenal perforation and hepatic subcapsular hematoma (HSH). The recent advent of free-electron laser (FEL) sources is driving the scientific community to extend table-top laser research to shorter wavelengths adding elemental selectivity and chemical state specificity. Both a compact setup (mini-TIMER) and a separate instrument (EIS-TIMER) dedicated to four-wave-mixing (FWM) experiments has been designed and constructed, to be operated as a branch of the Elastic and Inelastic Scattering beamline: EIS. The FWM experiments that are planned at EIS-TIMER are based on the transient grating approach, where two crossed FEL pulses create a controlled modulation of the sample excitations while a third time-delayed pulse is used to monitor the dynamics of the excited state.

Liquid crystal based sensors monitoring lipase activity: a new rapid and sensitive method for cytotoxicity assays.

In this work we present liquid crystal (LC) based sensor devices to monitor cell viability. The sensing layer is composed by the LC and a planar monolayer of phospholipids. In the presence of minute traces of phospholipases, which hydrolyze enzymatically phospholipids, the LC-lipid interface is disintegrated.

[Binge eating and associated factors among teenagers in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso State, Brazil].

Binge eating means ingesting a large amount of food during a certain period of time, followed by a sensation of lack of control over what and how much has been eaten. The study aimed to estimate the prevalence of binge eating episodes and associated factors in teenagers. The cross-sectional study included 1,209 teenagers (14 to 19 years old).

Changes in sulfhydryl status have been shown to be involved with the ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity. In addition, evidence shows the importance of replenishing thiols in patients with alcoholic liver disease. This study was undertaken to examine the possible beneficial effects of the individual and simultaneous treatments with two antioxidant drugs (N-acetylcysteine and ebselen) against ethanol-induced changes in thiol status, as well as on the activities of δ-aminolevulinate dehydratase (δ-ALA-D) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in mice liver.

Acetaldehyde, the primary ethanol metabolite, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of alcoholic liver disease, but the mechanism involved is still under investigation. This study aims at the search for direct in vitro effects of different concentrations of acetaldehyde (30, 100 and 300microM) on the activities of glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) from liver supernatants, and the thiol-peroxidase activity of ebselen. They did not change after pre-incubation with acetaldehyde, which suggests that acetaldehyde does not have any direct effect.
