Openness to diversity is a crucial component of cultural competence needed in the increasingly diversified modern society and a necessary condition for benefitting from diversity contacts and interventions (e.g., diversity training, cultural courses).

Predictors of satisfaction in geographically close and long-distance relationships.

In this study, the authors examined geographically close (GCRs) and long-distance (LDRs) romantic relationship satisfaction as explained by insecure attachment, self-disclosure, gossip, and idealization. After college student participants (N = 536) completed a Web survey, structural equation modeling (SEM) multigroup analysis revealed that the GCR and LDR models were nonequivalent, as expected. Self-disclosure mediated the insecure attachment-idealization path differently in GCRs and in LDRs.

A collaborative approach to group experiential learning with undergraduate nursing students.

Because many nursing responsibilities are accomplished in groups, undergraduate nursing curricula need to prepare students in the skills required to function effectively in groups. This article describes an interdisciplinary, group experiential learning approach used with baccalaureate nursing students as group participants and graduate counseling psychology students as facilitators. This teaching method provides learning to enhance the knowledge and skills of students preparing for both professions.

Adolescent grief: relationship category and emotional closeness.

Bereaved adolescents (N = 90) who had experienced relatively common death losses (e.g., grandparent, friend) completed the Texas Revised Inventory of Grief and the Emotional Closeness Scale and Continuum.

A patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and untreated Encephalitozoon (Septata) intestinalis microsporidiosis leading to small bowel perforation. Response to albendazole.

Background: Encephalitozoon (Septata) intestinalis is a common disseminating opportunistic intestinal microsporidian affecting patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. This microsporidian does respond to albendazole therapy. A patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and chronic diarrhea presented to George Washington University Hospital in January of 1996.

Adult attachment styles: some thoughts on closeness-distance struggles.

Difficulty with distance regulation is a central source of controversy in couples' relationships. This article describes how attachment theory can contribute to the understanding and treatment of closeness-distance struggles. Discussion focuses on (a) closeness-seeking as a feature of the attachment system, (b) individual differences in adult attachment styles, and (c) the working model that governs how salient interpersonal information is processed and is responded to both emotionally and behaviorally.

Visual field testing in the management of cytomegalovirus retinitis.

Background: Sequential visual field testing is an extremely helpful adjunct to ophthalmoscopy and fundus photography in the management of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis with the antiviral agents ganciclovir or foscarnet in patients with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The authors studied the visual field defects found in a series of 110 patients with AIDS and CMV retinitis.

Methods: Ophthalmoscopy and fundus photography were performed on all patients.

A 31-year-old white male homosexual was healthy until March 1984, when he developed Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, which resolved with treatment.
