High plasma homocysteine levels have been observed in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients treated with levodopa. In this study, we investigated the effects of C677T and A1298C MTHFR polymorphisms, in association with L-DOPA daily dose and vitamin status, on hyperhomocysteinemia development in PD patients. Plasma homocysteine and folate/vitamin B12 levels were assayed in 49 L-DOPA-treated PD patients, and compared with those of 86 healthy subjects.

The challenges of caring for abdominal ostomy disorders have grown over the years. Because the literature shows no evidence of a tool to classify peristomal skin disorders, a study group comprised of seven enterostomal therapy nurses and four surgeons sought to provide an objective, reproducible, standardized classification instrument. A prospective, observational study was conducted among eight ostomy centers across Italy.

Levetiracetam (LEV) monotherapy was investigated in 25 patients with advanced Alzheimer's disease (AD) and new-onset epileptic seizures in a prospective open-label study. At a daily dose of 1000-1500 mg, 72% were seizure-free for at least one year; 16% discontinued for untolerability; 8% were unresponsive; 4% were lost to follow-up. These results suggest the need for controlled studies to confirm if LEV can be a first-choice drug in AD.

The liver is involved in up to 73% of patients suffering from hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), but only some of them become symptomatic. Although management is often conservative, sometimes a more aggressive approach is required. The role of surgery is still undefined.

Interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) is currently the only treatment for patients with chronic hepatitis C. Yet it can induce acute renal transplantation rejection possibly by stimulating humoral responses. We tested patient sera for detection of donor-specific anti-human leukocyte antigen (HLA) antibodies observing an increased panel-reactive antibodies value after IFN-alpha therapy.

The influence of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and/or common polymorphisms (677C --> T, 1298A --> C) of the methylene-tetrahydrofolate-reductase (MTHFR) gene on the recurrence time of hyper-total-homocysteinemia (tHcy > 13 micromol/L) was investigated in 59 hyper-homocysteinemic patients (34M/25F, 20-49 years). Plasma tHcy and folate were assayed before and after 1-month folate supplementation (5 mg/day), and after 2, 4, and 6 months. Four MTHFR polymorphism groups were identified with the following tHcy (micromol/L) and folate (nmol/L) levels (mean +/- SD): (a) MTHFR677TT/1298AA, 24 patients, 36.

Mini-chromosome maintenance (MCM) proteins form ring-like hexameric complexes that are commonly believed to act as the replicative DNA helicase at the eukaryotic/archaeal DNA replication fork. Because of their simplified composition with respect to the eukaryotic counterparts, the archaeal MCM complexes represent a good model system to use in analyzing the structural/functional relationships of these important replication factors. In this study the domain organization of the MCM-like protein from Sulfolobus solfataricus (Sso MCM) has been dissected by trypsin partial proteolysis.

The eukaryotic GINS complex has an essential role in the initiation and elongation phases of genome duplication. It is composed of four paralogous subunits--Sld5, Psf1, Psf2 and Psf3--which are ubiquitous and evolutionarily conserved in eukaryotic organisms. Here, we report the biochemical characterization of the human GINS complex (hGINS).

The hyper-thermophilic archaeon Sulfolobus solfataricus possesses two functional DNA polymerases belonging to the B-family (Sso DNA pol B1) and to the Y-family (Sso DNA pol Y1). Sso DNA pol B1 recognizes the presence of uracil and hypoxanthine in the template strand and stalls synthesis 3-4 bases upstream of this lesion ("read-ahead" function). On the other hand, Sso DNA pol Y1 is able to synthesize across these and other lesions on the template strand.

Patients with ipsilateral neglect (IN) bisect lines toward contralesional space. It has been posited that IN might be induced by an attempt at compensation, as part of the crossover effect, where patients with an ipsilesional bias when bisecting long lines, cross over and develop a contralesional bias on short lines or as a release of an approach (grasp) behavior that might be attentional or intentional. To test these alternative hypotheses we had a patient with IN from a right medial frontal lesion bisect lines that contained no cue, a left-sided cue, a right-sided cue, and bilateral cues.

The spatial allocation of attention influences estimates of stimulus magnitude, including line length and the line bisection task has been used to assess the asymmetrical allocation of spatial attention. The purpose of this study is to learn if normal subjects' allocation of attention changes as a function of the trunk-head centered spatial position of the line stimuli. Normal subjects were asked to bisect lines placed in five different head-trunk centered special positions (central, right up-distal, left up-distal, right down-proximal, left down-proximal).

Background: We studied a visual artist with Lewy body dementia (LBD) to learn how this disease influenced his paintings during the course of the disease.

Methods: Study 1 evaluated two paintings of the same subject matter, one that the patient painted before his illness and the other after the onset of this disease. Study 2 evaluated a collection of his paintings from the time before he was ill (1994) until the time he stopped painting when he was suffering with LBD (2002).

The survival and function of a kidney transplant are influenced by numerous immunological and nonimmunological factors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of a number of cadaveric donor parameters on transplanted kidney function, and in particular on the occurrence of delayed graft function (DGF) since DGF is one of the most important factors in long-term organ survival. This study looked at 143 patients who underwent kidney transplant of whom 32 displayed DGF.

Sensory processing is a crucial underpinning of the development of social cognition, a function which is compromised in variable degree in patients with pervasive developmental disorders (PDD). In this manuscript, we review some of the most recent and relevant contributions, which have looked at auditory sensory processing derangement in PDD. The variability in the clinical characteristics of the samples studied so far, in terms of severity of the associated cognitive deficits and associated limited compliance, underlying aetiology and demographic features makes a univocal interpretation arduous.
