Reliability and outcomes of lymph nodes biopsy in cT1-cT2 N0 supraglottic laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

Background: In oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), sentinel node biopsy (SNB) was described as a reliable and reproductive alternative to elective neck dissection for the staging of clinical N0 T1-T2 patients. The SNB technique in supraglottic laryngeal SCC was successfully described in small series. The aim of this study is to analyze retrospectively the results of SNB technique in supraglottic SCC in CHU Godinne, to determine if the technique is reliable and may be proposed in a future multicentral prospective trial.

Deep-Learning-Based Thrombus Localization and Segmentation in Patients with Posterior Circulation Stroke.

Thrombus volume in posterior circulation stroke (PCS) has been associated with outcome, through recanalization. Manual thrombus segmentation is impractical for large scale analysis of image characteristics. Hence, in this study we develop the first automatic method for thrombus localization and segmentation on CT in patients with PCS.

Pleth variability index and fluid management practices: a multicenter service evaluation.

Objectives: The introduction of a new technology has the potential to modify clinical practices, especially if easy to use, reliable and non-invasive. This observational before/after multicenter service evaluation compares fluid management practices during surgery (with fluids volumes as primary outcome), and clinical outcomes (secondary outcomes) before and after the introduction of the Pleth Variability Index (PVI), a non-invasive fluid responsiveness monitoring.

Results: In five centers, 23 anesthesiologists participated during a 2-years period.

Global Impact of COVID-19 on Stroke Care and IV Thrombolysis.

Objective: To measure the global impact of COVID-19 pandemic on volumes of IV thrombolysis (IVT), IVT transfers, and stroke hospitalizations over 4 months at the height of the pandemic (March 1 to June 30, 2020) compared with 2 control 4-month periods.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, observational, retrospective study across 6 continents, 70 countries, and 457 stroke centers. Diagnoses were identified by their ICD-10 codes or classifications in stroke databases.

Refractory thyroid carcinoma: which systemic treatment to use?

The incidence of thyroid cancer has increased markedly in recent decades, but has been stable in terms of mortality rates. For the most part, these cancers are treated with surgery, which may or may not be followed by radioactive iodine depending on the tumor subtype. Still, many of these cancers will recur and may be treated with radioactive iodine or another surgery.

Clinical guidelines for the practice of peripheral nerve blocks in the adult.

These guidelines, made by BARA, are, like the "Safety First Guidelines" of the SARB, clinical recomendations for a good and safe practice when performing peripheral nerve blocks (PNB). These recommendations were made according to the most recent literature and experts opinion and are therefore prone to changes due to evolution of literature. The guidelines deal with "Informed Consent", preoperative visit, monitoring, equipment and the PNB procedure itself regardless of using ultrasound or neurostimultion or both.

Cost-effectiveness analysis of FDG PET-CT in the management of pulmonary metastases from malignant melanoma.

Objectives: Most guidelines consider FDG PET-CT to detect occult extra-pulmonary disease prior to lung metastasectomy. A cost-effectiveness analysis, using a Markov model over a 10 year period, was performed to compare two different surveillance programs, either PET-CT or whole-body CT, in patients with suspected pulmonary metastasised melanoma.

Methods: Data from published studies provided probabilities for the model.

Activity-based costing evaluation of a [(18)F]-fludeoxyglucose positron emission tomography study.

Objective: The aim of the study is to use the activity-based costing approach to give a better insight in the actual cost structure of a positron emission tomography procedure (FDG-PET) by defining the constituting components and by simulating the impact of possible resource or practice changes.

Methods: The cost data were obtained from the hospital administration, personnel and vendor interviews as well as from structured questionnaires. A process map separates the process in 16 patient- and non-patient-related activities, to which the detailed cost data are related.

Role of PET in the initial staging of cutaneous malignant melanoma: systematic review.

Purpose: To calculate summary estimates of the diagnostic performance of fluorine 18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomographic (PET) imaging in the initial staging of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM), following the new American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging classification on per-patient and per-lesion bases.

Materials And Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews databases, and reference lists of reviews and included papers were searched, without any language restrictions, for relevant articles published before March 2007. Two reviewers independently assessed study eligibility and methodologic quality by using the quality assessment of diagnostic accuracy studies checklist.

Activity-based costing evaluation of [18F]-fludeoxyglucose production.

Introduction: As healthcare expenses are escalating in many countries, the sector faces a new challenge of becoming more cost efficient. There is an urgent need for more accurate data on the costs of healthcare procedures. The cost of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) with [(18)F]-fludeoxyglucose ((18)F-FDG) studies is mainly influenced by the price of the radiopharmaceutical, which may vary throughout Europe from 300 to 500 Euro per patient dose (370 MBq).

An uncommon case of septic cortical osteitis.

A 39-year-old healthy female patient with an unremarkable medical history complained about a rapidly progressive pain for a period of 1 month at the level of the anterior part of the right leg that was not relieved by NSAIDs. She mentioned only that she resumed her high level sport training 6 months before the onset of the symptoms. There was no specific history of trauma, fever, or other distinctive symptoms.

FDG PET utility in paraneoplastic sweet syndrome.

We describe a 43-year-old woman who presented a sudden onset of fever and migratory arthralgias. Physical examination revealed tender, well-demarcated erythematous papules and plaques, consistent with a Sweet syndrome. After developing systemic symptoms with hepatomegaly, a liver biopsy and FDG PET imaging demonstrated the presence of an aggressive and extended non-Hodgkin T-cell lymphoma.

Sixty years in algal physiology and photosynthesis.

This personal perspective records research experiences in chemistry and biology at four German universities, two before and two after World War II. The research themes came from cytophysiology of green unicellular algae, in particular their photosynthesis. The function of inorganic ions in photosynthesis and dark respiration was investigated at different degrees of specific mineral stress (deficiencies), and the kinetics of recovery followed after the addition of the missing element.
