Introduction: In USA, six million individuals with Sub-Saharan ancestry carry two high-risk variants, which increase the risk for kidney diseases. Whether APOL1 high-risk variants are independent risk factors for cardiovascular diseases is unclear and requires further investigation.

Methods: We characterized a mouse model to investigate the role of APOL1 in dyslipidemia and cardiovascular diseases.

The recent excitement surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) in health care underscores the importance of physician engagement with new technologies. Future clinicians must develop a strong understanding of data science (DS) to further enhance patient care. However, DS remains largely absent from medical school curricula, even though it is recognized as vital by medical students and residents alike.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how social vulnerability within a community impacts outcomes for patients involved in motor vehicle collisions (MVCs), focusing on the relationship between a patient’s home environment and the crash location.
  • Researchers used crash data from Michigan and a social vulnerability index (SVI) to categorize areas by vulnerability levels, analyzing the interaction between home and crash environments.
  • Results indicated that most MVCs occurred in areas with moderate social vulnerability, and while higher home SVI was associated with increased mortality odds initially, this significance diminished when vehicular and environmental factors were included in the analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • VHL disease and some kidney cancers (RCC) are linked to a problem with a gene called Von Hippel-Lindau, which causes issues with tumor growth due to HIF-2α.
  • Belzutifan is the only medicine approved to block HIF-2α but might not always work for everyone, so scientists are looking for new ways to improve treatment.
  • Researchers are also studying other medicines and combinations that could make HIF-2α blockers more effective and are exploring new HIF-2α inhibitors to see if they can help treat advanced kidney cancer better.

Isolated, ischemic scrotal lesions are an uncommon manifestation of systemic calciphylaxis. This highly morbid disease seen in patients with end-stage renal disease and other risk factors for small vessel calcification results in tissue necrosis and ulceration. Scrotal calciphylaxis is uncommon and difficult to diagnose in patients with comorbid conditions that cause isolated genital skin lesions, including prior systemic infections.

Article Synopsis
  • A linear tomosynthesis scanner aimed at imaging histologic samples at a high resolution of 10 µm faces mechanical instability, which can lead to image blurring and artifacts due to the stage's movement inaccuracies.
  • To address this issue, a new online calibration method was developed using a layer of randomly dispersed micro glass beads or calcium particles on the sample stage.
  • This calibration technique relies on understanding the rigid body motion of the stage with the marker layer and has been shown to be straightforward to produce and effective in improving imaging quality.

Although many emergency departments (EDs) receive telehealth services for psychiatry, or telepsychiatry, to manage acute psychiatric emergencies, national research on the usage of ED telepsychiatry is limited. To investigate ED telepsychiatry usage in the pre-COVID-19 era, we surveyed a sample of EDs receiving telepsychiatry in 2019, as a follow-up to a survey targeted to similar EDs in 2017. All U.
