Eating behaviors of children with intestinal failure and those who achieve enteral autonomy: An observational cross-sectional study.

Background: Children with intestinal failure (IF) receiving prolonged parenteral nutrition (PN) are exposed to risk factors that predispose them to developing disordered eating behavior. This study aimed to assess the food interest patterns of PN-dependent children with IF and those who achieved enteral autonomy (EA).

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in children aged 1-14 years with IF currently receiving PN for >60 days and in children who achieved EA.

2024 Standardization of Polysomnography Reports - A Consensus of the Brazilian Sleep Association.

 The absence of standardized reporting for sleep medicine exams across different laboratories can lead to misinterpretation, diagnostic inconsistencies, and suboptimal treatment strategies. This document seeks to establish guidelines for the development of sleep study reports, covering recordings from studies of types 1 to 4, and represents the official position of Associação Brasileira do Sono (ABS; Brazilian Sleep Association) on the standardization of polysomnography (PSG) and cardiorespiratory polygraphies.  The recommendations for the items to be reported in PSG records were developed by means of a Delphi study, comprised of two voting rounds.

2024 Position Statement on the Use of Different Diagnostic Methods for Sleep Disorders in Adults - Brazilian Sleep Association.

 The current document represents the official position of Associação Brasileira do Sono (ABS; Brazilian Sleep Association) on the application of different sleep studies and provides specific recommendations for the use of different types of polysomnography (PSG) and respiratory polygraphy.  The present document was based on existing guidelines. The steering committee discussed its findings and developed recommendations and contraindications, which were refined in discussions with the advisory committee.

Valproic acid ameliorates morpho-dysfunctional effects triggered by Ischiatic nerve crush injury-induced by compression model in mice: Nerve regeneration and immune-modulatory pathway.

Peripheral nerve injuries are extremely severe and may lead to permanent disability, despite the regenerative capacity of the peripheral nervous system (PNS). To date, there is no established pharmacological therapy capable of predicting functional recovery and alleviation of trauma-related symptoms such as neuropathic pain, inflammation and weakness, which are the main targets for current therapies. In this work we provide new evidence for a therapeutic use of valproic acid (VPA) upon ischiatic nerve injury.

Objective: To perform the translation, cross-cultural adaptation and validation the Physical Activity Scale for Individuals with Physical Disabilities (PASIPD) for the Brazilian Portuguese in a sample of people with lower limb amputation.

Methods: This is a methodological study with cross-sectional design. Translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the scale were initially carried out in accordance with international guidelines.

Neuronal oscillatory patterns are believed to underpin multiple cognitive mechanisms. Accordingly, compromised oscillatory dynamics were shown to be associated with neuropsychiatric conditions. Therefore, the possibility of modulating, or controlling, oscillatory components of brain activity as a therapeutic approach has emerged.

Salmonella in black pepper (Piper nigrum): From farm to processing.

Contamination of black pepper (Piper nigrum) with Salmonella is a frequent problem in retail and imported shipments. However, there is scarce information about the prevalence of the pathogen in the initial stages of black pepper production chain. This study sought to bridge this gap in research by determining the prevalence, as well as quantifying, and identifying the main Salmonella serovars present during black pepper primary production and processing.

Estimating the cost for obstetric fistula repair in hospitals of Mozambique: a low-income country.

Background: Obstetric fistula is incident and prevalent in low-income countries. Globally, about 100,000 women develop fistula annually. In Mozambique, more than 2,000 fistulas are reported annually.

Interpretable representation learning for 3D multi-piece intracellular structures using point clouds.

A key challenge in understanding subcellular organization is quantifying interpretable measurements of intracellular structures with complex multi-piece morphologies in an objective, robust and generalizable manner. Here we introduce a morphology-appropriate representation learning framework that uses 3D rotation invariant autoencoders and point clouds. This framework is used to learn representations of complex multi-piece morphologies that are independent of orientation, compact, and easy to interpret.

Xylem sap residue in cut-open conduits can affect gas discharge in pneumatic experiments.

Considerable attention has been paid to address methodological concerns related to measurements of embolism in conduits of angiosperm xylem. A fast, easy, and cheap method is based on gas extraction measurements from dehydrating samples to obtain pneumatic vulnerability curves (VCs). Here, we tested the assumption that cutting open conduits leads to gas-filled lumina when these are cut in air at fairly high water potentials, which is required to detect embolism in intact conduits.

Differences in the cerebral amyloid angiopathy proteome in Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment.

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is characterized by amyloid beta (Aβ) deposition in cerebrovasculature. It is prevalent with aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD), associated with intracerebral hemorrhage, and contributes to cognitive deficits. To better understand molecular mechanisms, CAA(+) and CAA(-) vessels were microdissected from paraffin-embedded autopsy temporal cortex of age-matched Control (n = 10), mild cognitive impairment (MCI; n = 4), and sporadic AD (n = 6) cases, followed by label-free quantitative mass spectrometry.

The Impact of Sleep: From Ancient Rituals to Modern Challenges.

Although sleep is crucial for mental and physical health, insufficient sleep is a growing problem in our modern society. In general, adults need approximately eight hours of sleep per night, but this is often unfeasible nowadays. This sleep restriction has been observed, and it has worsened, throughout the past two centuries; therefore, it is more attributed to socioeconomic changes than to biological adaptations.

The influence of APOE on the pTau interactome in sporadic Alzheimer's disease.

APOE is the major genetic risk factor for sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although APOE is known to promote Aβ pathology, recent data also support an effect of APOE polymorphism on phosphorylated Tau (pTau) pathology. To elucidate these potential effects, the pTau interactome was analyzed across APOE genotypes in the frontal cortex of 10 advanced AD cases (n = 5 APOE and n = 5 APOE), using a combination of anti-pTau pS396/pS404 (PHF1) immunoprecipitation (IP) and mass spectrometry (MS).

Pharmacological potential of 4-dimethylamino chalcone against acute and neuropathic pain in mice.

Objectives: This work investigated the acute antinociceptive effect of a synthetic chalcone, 4-dimethylamino chalcone (DMAC), as well as its effects on vincristine-induced peripheral neuropathy (VIPN) in mice.

Methods: The inhibitory activity of myeloperoxidase was assessed by measuring HOCl formation. Formalin and hot plate tests were used to study the acute antinociceptive effect of DMAC.

The Use of Fast-Acting Insulin Topical Solution on Skin to Promote Surgical Wound Healing in Cats.

Wound healing is a complex biological process involving a coordinated sequence of events aimed at restoring tissue integrity and function. Recent advancements in wound care have introduced novel therapies, with topical insulin application emerging as a promising strategy for promoting tissue healing. This study, involving 60 female cats ( = 60) undergoing elective spaying, aimed to evaluate the effects of topical fast-acting insulin on the healing process of surgical wounds.

Unlabelled: Cancer cases and survival have increased significantly in recent decades.

Objective: In this study, we sought to evidence whether bone, joint and cartilage neoplasms are increasing with the aging of the Brazilian population, using the analysis of the DATASUS and IBGE databases, between 1979 and 2020.

Methods: We compared the means and the proportion of death in Brazil, to observe the confidence interval overlaps, separated by region.

Is neurodevelopment impaired in Brazilian children with intestinal failure on prolonged parenteral nutrition? A single center study.

Purpose: To assess the neurodevelopment outcomes of children younger than 42 months of age with intestinal failure (IF) using prolonged parenteral nutrition (PN) followed by a Pediatric Multidisciplinary Intestinal Rehabilitation Program from a public tertiary hospital in Brazil.

Methods: Bayley III scale was administered in children aged 2 to 42 months with IF and receiving PN for more than 60 days. Composite scores in cognitive, motor, and language domains were analyzed.

Most research on trinucleotide repeats (TRs) focuses on human diseases, with few on the impact of TR expansions on plant gene expression. This work investigates TRs' effect on global gene expression in Psidium guajava L., a plant species with widespread distribution and significant relevance in the food, pharmacology, and economics sectors.

Sex diferences in serum and synovial fluid C-reactive protein concentration in healthy dogs.

Differences between serum C-reactive protein (SCRP) and synovial fluid C-reactive protein (SFCRP) concentrations in healthy animals may be influenced by the sex of the individual and associated with various factors. The objective of this study was to evaluate the disparities in SCRP and SFCRP concentrations between females and males, as well as within each sex. Sixty healthy dogs (N = 60), comprising both sexes, were enrolled in the study.

Rootstocks affect the vulnerability to embolism and pit membrane thickness in Citrus scions.

Embolism resistance of xylem tissue varies among species and is an important trait related to drought resistance, with anatomical attributes like pit membrane thickness playing an important role in avoiding embolism spread. Grafted Citrus trees are commonly grown in orchards, with the rootstock being able to affect the drought resistance of the whole plant. Here, we evaluated how rootstocks affect the vulnerability to embolism resistance of the scion using several rootstock/scion combinations.

Ebstein anomaly: 3D virtual and physical models from obstetrical ultrasound data.

3D virtual and physical models from ultrasound scan data allow a 3D spatial view of congenital heart anomalies, interactive discussion among a multidisciplinary team, and improved parental counseling. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first description of 3D physical and virtual models of a fetal Ebstein anomaly.

This literature review seeks to understand how motherhood and profession affect women's sleep. After the birth of a child, there is an increase in dissatisfaction with the quantity and quality of sleep. Awakenings and sleep disturbances are more frequent and can lead to increased fatigue and stress to reconcile household activities and work demands.

The Effects of Hormonal Contraceptives on the Sleep of Women of Reproductive Age.

Research about the effects of hormonal contraceptives on sleep has been performed but is subjected to important levels of methodological heterogeneity. Hormonal contraceptives impact sleep, but the direction of this association is not clear. Most studies describe a negative sleep profile among contraceptive users, including increased sleepiness, insomnia symptoms, decreased sleep efficiency, and a reduced overall sleep quality.
