[Caring: a fundamental concept in nursing. A review of literature].

Nursing is a profession based on the interaction with others therefore caring appears as one of its central concepts. The research around the concept is undervalued by the importance given to the technical and instrumental behaviours in nursing practice. A review of literature was undertaken on 20 articles published on a Portuguese nursing journal over ten years (1995-2005).

Resistance of Santa Ines and crossbred ewes to naturally acquired gastrointestinal nematode infections.

This trial was carried out in Piracicaba, São Paulo State, Brazil, to comparatively evaluate the degree of resistance to naturally acquired gastrointestinal nematode infections in sheep of the following genetic groups: purebred Santa Ines (SI), SI crossbred with Dorper (DO x SI), Ile de France (IF x SI), Suffolk (SU x SI), and Texel (TE x SI). Fifteen ewes from each group were raised indoors until 12 months of age. At this age, they were moved to pasture that was naturally contaminated by nematode infective larvae and were evaluated from December to May, 2007.

Early development of Moniliophthora perniciosa basidiomata and developmentally regulated genes.

Background: The hemibiotrophic fungus Moniliophthora perniciosa is the causal agent of Witches' broom, a disease of Theobroma cacao. The pathogen life cycle ends with the production of basidiocarps in dead tissues of the infected host. This structure generates millions of basidiospores that reinfect young tissues of the same or other plants.

[COPD exacerbation or something else? Clinical case].

The authors present the case of a 45 -year -old female patient with Down syndrome, and known past medical history of COPD with multiple hospital admissions in the context of exacerbation of his lung disease. The facts refer to his latest hospitalization, whose motive, prior interpreted as a further exacerbation episode, after careful clinical reassessment and use of appropriate additional means of diagnosis, appeared to be due to an unusual cause. By presenting this case, the authors call the attention to the difficulty presented by particular situations, as well as to the risks of uncritical acceptance of common diagnoses.

[Analysis of fingerstick capillary glycemia versus alternative site: Results and patients preferences].

This paper evaluate the efficacy and patients preferences of glucose monitoring in alternatives sites: ear lobe, forearm and calf against conventional fingerstick. We studied 89 patients (39 M/ 50 F) with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2). Glucose monitoring was measured using a digital glucosimeter (ACCU - CHEK Performa, Roche), and ACCU-CHEK Multiclix lancetador, with grade 5 on the distal phalange on the right hand's third finger, inferior part of right ear lobe, right forearm and right calf.

Low-temperature spin transport in a S = 1 one-dimensional antiferromagnet.

We study spin transport in the insulating antiferromagnet with S = 1 in one dimension. The spin conductivity is calculated, at zero temperature, using a modified spin wave theory and the Kubo formalism, within the ladder approximation. Two-magnon processes provide the dominant contribution to the spin conductivity.

Celecoxib prevents tumor growth in an animal model by a COX-2 independent mechanism.

Purpose: Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been shown to reduce cell growth in several tumors. Among these possible antineoplastic drugs are cyclooxygenase- 2 (COX-2)-selective drugs, such as celecoxib, in which antitumoral mechanisms were evaluated in rats bearing Walker-256 (W256) tumor.

Methods: W256 carcinosarcoma cells were inoculated subcutaneously (10(7) cells/rat) in rats submitted to treatment with celecoxib (25 mg kg(-1)) or vehicle for 14 days.

Effects of acute alcohol consumption and vitamin E co-treatment on oxidative stress parameters in rats tongue.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of acute alcohol consumption and vitamin E co-treatment upon oxidative stress parameters in rats tongue. Thirty-eight, Wistar rats were separated into five groups (alcohol, alcohol/vitamin E, control, Tween, vitamin E). Alcohol and alcohol vitamin E groups had the standard diet, and 40% alcohol on drinking water.

Effects of aging on mouse tongue epithelium focusing on cell proliferation rate and morphological aspects.

The aim of this study was to investigate cell proliferation rate and certain morphological features of mouse epithelium as aging progresses. Tongue biopsies were performed on female mice (Mus domesticus domesticus) at 2, 8, 14 and 20 months of age as indicative of adolescence, adulthood, early senescence and senescence, respectively. Histological sections of tongue were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and subjected to silver staining for active nucleolar organizer region counting.

Cell-line-dependent sorting of recombinant phytase in cell cultures of Medicago truncatula.

Plant cell cultures as platforms for recombinant protein production are favoured over other systems because they combine the benefits of plants (low cost of production, low biosecurity risk, conserved post-translational modifications) with those of controlled cell cultures. However, many factors that affect the correct synthesis and accumulation of the recombinant product still need to be determined; in particular, the trafficking route of the recombinant proteins is poorly understood. Inferring disease mechanisms from epidemiological data in chronic kidney disease: calcium and phosphorus metabolism.

Background/aims: By applying numerical filtering to epidemiological data of 2,512 chronic kidney disease patients, we aimed to identify some of the underlying mechanisms of the calcium/phosphorus metabolism perturbations.

Methods: The measured variables, serum calcitriol, calcidiol, total calcium ([Ca](s)) and phosphorus ([P](s)) and the urinary excretions of calcium and phosphorus, were paired in the same patients with the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) or the serum concentrations of parathormone (i[PTH](s)) (used as independent variables) numerically filtered with a moving average and partitioned into 15-25 frequency classes. All variables exhibited unimodal frequency distributions.

Validation of tissue microarray technology in malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours.

Background: It has been suggested that the donor tissue cores used in tissue microarrays (TMAs) may not be representative of the whole tissue section.

Aim: To validate the use of TMA technology in the study of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours (MPNSTs).

Methods: A TMA was constructed containing five independent core biopsy samples of 14 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded MPNSTs.

Molecular structure in peripheral dog breeds: Portuguese native breeds as a case study.

Genetic variability in purebred dogs is known to be highly structured, with differences among breeds accounting for approximately 30% of the genetic variation. However, analysis of the genetic structure in non-cosmopolitan breeds and local populations is still limited. Nine Portuguese native dog breeds, and other peripheral dog populations (five) with regional affinities, were characterized using 16 microsatellites and 225 amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers, and the pattern of genetic differentiation was investigated.

Enfuvirtide (T-20) resistance-related mutations in HIV type 1 subtypes B, C, and F isolates from Brazilian patients failing HAART.

The synthetic peptide T-20 (enfuvirtide, EFV) represents the first compound approved by the FDA known as entry inhibitors (EIs). The resistance mutations associated with this new class of antiretroviral drug are located in the first heptad repeat (HR1) region of gp41. Amino acid changes in codons G36D/S, I37V, V38A/M/E, Q39H/R, Q40H, N42T, and N43D can confer resistance to EFV.

Effects of adrenomedullin on systolic and diastolic myocardial function.

Adrenomedullin (AM) effects were studied in rabbit papillary muscles by adding increasing concentrations (10(-10) to 10(-6)M) either alone or after pre-treatment with l-NNA, indomethacin, AM22-52 (AM receptor antagonist), CGRP(8-37) (CGRP receptors antagonist), KT5720 (PKA inhibitor), as well as after endocardial endothelium (EE) removal. Passive length-tension relations were constructed before and after a single concentration of AM (10(-6)M). AM concentration-dependently induced negative inotropic and lusitropic effects, and increased resting muscle length (RL).

THE INFLUENCE OF THE SURGICAL APPROACH CONCERNING DISLOCATION IN TOTAL HIP ARTHROPLASTY.

Objectives: Our primary aim was to evaluate the occurrence of dislocation of non-cemented total hip arthroplasty, when using the posterior and the direct lateral approaches.

Methods: We performed a comparative retrospective study with 232 patients submitted to non-cemented total hip arthroplasty, due to the diagnosis of primary or secondary osteoarthritis. The posterior approach was used in 105 patients while direct lateral approach was used in 127 patients.

Urotensin II-induced increase in myocardial distensibility is modulated by angiotensin II and endothelin-1.

Endogenous regulators, such as angiotensin-II (AngII), endothelin-1 (ET-1) and urotensin-II (U-II) are released from various cell types and their plasma levels are elevated in several cardiovascular diseases. The present study evaluated a potential crosstalk between these systems by investigating if the myocardial effects of U-II are modulated by AngII or ET-1. Effects of U-II (10(-8), 10(-7), 10(-6) M) were tested in rabbit papillary muscles in the absence and in the presence of losartan (selective AT(1) receptor antagonist), PD-145065 (nonselective ET-1 receptors antagonist), losartan plus PD-145065, AngII or ET-1.

Current use and future perspectives of diagnostic and therapeutic lasers in Oral Medicine.

Several diagnostic and therapeutic methods are based on the optical properties of lasers. In therapeutic applications, laser light is absorbed in a specific manner, whereas light is scattered, reflected, or transmitted from different structures. Improvements in laser technology allow new procedures and broaden the scope of applications for both diagnosis and therapy.

[Tuberous sclerosis in childhood].

Tuberous sclerosis is an autosomal dominant disease that results from mutations in one of two tumor suppressor genes, TSC1 and TSC2. We are reporting a two-year-old girl who presented with hypopigmented macules (ash leaf) in the skin and small erythematous facial papules (angiofibromas). Her mother was known to have tuberous sclerosis that was diagnosed at age seven.

RTOG criteria to evaluate acute skin reaction and its risk factors in patients with breast cancer submitted to radiotherapy.

Purpose: Evaluate and classify skin reactions through the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) criteria and characterize factors that can intervene in these reactions.

Method: Prospective study, with 86 women submitted to adjuvant breast radiotherapy with a total dose of 5040cGy, in a 6 MeV Linear Accelerator. Personal data were collected and breast size was measured (distance between field separation and breast height).

Mycoplasma pneumoniae-associated mucositis with minimal skin manifestations.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae-associated mucositis is a rarely described complication of M. pneumoniae infection presenting with ocular, oral, and genital involvement but without the typical skin lesions seen in Stevens-Johnson syndrome. A 27-year-old man with a past history of asthma presented at the emergency room with a 1-week history of cough (initially non-productive but subsequently associated with non-bloody mucopurulent sputum), fever, myalgias, headache, and progressive dyspnea.

A plain X-ray vascular calcification score is associated with arterial stiffness and mortality in dialysis patients.

Background: Vascular calcifications are highly prevalent in dialysis patients and are associated with arterial stiffness and mortality. The use of simple and inexpensive methods to evaluate arterial stiffness and vascular calcifications is desired. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship of a simple vascular calcification score (SVCS) with pulse wave velocity (PWV) and pulse pressure (PP) and to evaluate their association with all-cause mortality.
