The laser sintering of polymers is an additive manufacturing technology that is becoming increasingly established in the industrial environment. This study investigated the thickness-dependent permeation properties of laser-sintered (LS) polymers as required to design and produce components with a special barrier performance to gaseous substances. Helium and oxygen permeation experiments were carried out on quenched and standard LS polyamide 12 (PA12) sheets generated with two, four, six, and eight layers at a constant powder layer thickness of 100 µm.

Gold nanoparticles are excellent intracellular markers in X-ray imaging. Having shown previously the suitability of gold nanoparticles to detect small groups of cells with the synchrotron-based computed tomography (CT) technique both ex vivo and in vivo, it is now demonstrated that even single-cell resolution can be obtained in the brain at least ex vivo. Working in a small animal model of malignant brain tumour, the image quality obtained with different imaging modalities was compared.

Although a considerable amount is known about molecular dysregulations in later stages of tumor progression, much less is known about the regulated processes supporting initial tumor growth. Insight into such processes can provide a fuller understanding of carcinogenesis, with implications for cancer treatment and risk assessment. One of the core pathological features of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the accumulation of amyloid plaques in the brain. Current efforts of medical imaging research aim at visualizing amyloid plaques in living patients in order to evaluate the progression of the pathology, but also to facilitate the diagnosis of AD at the prodromal stage. X-ray imaging with grating interferometry has previously been regarded as a technique providing information only in direct space. It delivers absorption, phase, and dark-field contrast, which can be viewed as parameters of the underlying but unresolved scattering distribution. Phase retrieval from unidirectional radiographic differential phase contrast images requires integration of noisy data. A method is presented, which aims to suppress stripe artifacts arising from direct image integration. It is purely algorithmic and therefore, compared to alternative approaches, neither additional alignment nor an increased scan time is required.

It is known that the sensitivity of X-ray phase-contrast grating interferometry with regard to electron density variations present in the sample is related to the minimum detectable refraction angle. In this article a numerical framework is developed that allows for a realistic and quantitative determination of the sensitivity. The framework is validated by comparisons with experimental results and then used for the quantification of several influences on the sensitivity, such as spatial coherence or the number of phase step images.

22 patients suffering from exanthematic psoriasis were irradiated with the UV-lamps UVS 65-2 (Narva, Brand-Erbisdorf) or TL-01 (Philips Company, Eindhoven, Niederlande) respectively. The latter one emits a narrow-band UV-spectrum at 311 nm which seems to be most suitable for the treatment of psoriasis. On our condition the clearing rate was higher and the cumulative irradiation dose was significantly lower with the TL-01 lamp.
