Hypokalaemic myopathy associated with iatrogenic hypercorticism in a cat.

Case Summary: A 12-year-old castrated male domestic shorthair cat was referred for investigation of lethargy, hindlimb weakness with plantigrade stance and ventroflexion of the neck. The cat was fed a balanced diet and had received methylprednisolone acetate at a dose of 20 mg intramuscularly every 6 months for 6 years. On blood work, severe hypokalaemia and marked elevation of muscle enzymes were noticeable.

Outcome Measures of Open versus Minimally Invasive Surgery for Thoracolumbar Spinal Traumatic Fractures: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

To evaluate the efficacy of open and percutaneous pedicle screw fixation in the treatment of thoracolumbar fractures. Online databases MEDLINE (PubMed), SCOPUS, and Cochrane were searched for English language articles published between January 2001 and December 2023, limited to articles that included the clinical and radiological outcomes of adult patients. The main outcome measures of the study were the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) score, and the Cobb angle.

A case of spermatic cord B-cell lymphoma relapsing to the brain in a dog.

A 13-year-old, intact male mixed-breed dog was referred to our clinic for lethargy and asthenia following an episode of gastroenteritis. As an incidental finding during abdominal ultrasound, a mass on the right spermatic cord was seen. Cytology of the mass revealed a monomorphic population of large, round cells with a lymphoid appearance.

Impact of muscle mass on survival of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma after liver transplantation beyond the Milan criteria.

Background: Access to the liver transplant waitlist for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) depends on tumour presentation, biology, and response to treatments. The Milan Criteria (MC) represent the benchmark for expanded criteria that incorporate additional prognostic factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the added value of skeletal muscle index (SMI) in HCC patients beyond the MC.

Serum creatine kinase isoenzymes and macroenzymes in dogs with different neurologic diseases.

Background: Increased serum activity of CK isoenzymes and macroenzymes, and in particular of the brain isoenzyme (CK-BB) has been reported in dogs with central nervous system (CNS) disorders. However, no studies on the possible differences in serum activities of CK iso- or macroenzymes (Macro-CK1 and Macro-CK2) in different neurologic diseases are available.

Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the electrophoretic distribution of CK iso- and macroenzymes in dogs with CNS disorders in order to assess whether this distribution depends on a specific neurologic disease.

Cytological and histological correlation in diagnosing feline and canine mediastinal masses.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the agreement between cytological and histological diagnosis of canine and feline mediastinal masses to assess the utility of cytological examination in accurately diagnosing and classifying mediastinal lesions.

Methods: A retrospective review of 58 cases of mediastinal masses from 21 dogs and 37 cats were performed. Histopathology was used as the diagnostic reference standard.

Clinicopathological findings in non-human primate recipients of porcine renal xenografts: quantitative and qualitative evaluation of proteinuria.

Background: Immunological and histopathological features in pig-to-primate renal xenotransplantation are widely studied. Only limited data have been reported about clinicopathological findings in primate recipients of life-supporting renal xenografts. In human medicine, proteinuria represents a common complication in kidney transplantation and is associated with impaired graft survival.
