Despite recent progress, bacterial degradation of lignin is not completely understood. To address the mechanisms that bacteria from unknown taxonomic groups use to perform lignin-monomer degradation, functional analysis of bacterial metagenome-assembled genomes from soil-derived consortia enriched for microorganisms capable of degrading lignin was performed. A total of 232 metagenome-assembled genomes were recovered.

Four novel triterpenoid saponins, 1,3,23-trihydroxy-olean-12-en-28-oic acid 28---glycopyranoside ester (), 1,3,23-trihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid 28---glycopyranoside ester (), 3---galloyl-1,23-dihydroxy-olean-12-en-28-oic acid 28---glycopyranoside ester () and 3---galloyl-1,23-dihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid 28---glycopyranoside ester () and two new pentacyclic triterpenoids, 3-----coumaroyl-1-hydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid () and 3-----coumaroyl-1-hydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid (), together with six known compounds were isolated from the ethanolic extracts of leaves and stem bark. Their structures were established by HR-MS, 1D and 2D NMR and comparison with literature data. Additionally, the antimicrobial activity of the leaves and stem bark extracts and fractions was evaluated using the micro broth dilution technique.

In this work two theoretical approximations, the so-called theoretical approach of energy levels and an extension of the modified mean field approach (TAEL and MMFA, respectively) are applied to the study of surface decoration of modified nanostructures like crystalline nanoparticles. The surface of the nanoparticles is modified by the irreversible random deposition of defects consisting in isolated atoms. Such deposition is carried out until a certain surface density is reached, leaving the rest of the sites available for a second species to adsorb.

The present work aims to investigate whether it is possible to identify and quantify the contributions of the interstitial fluid and the solid skeleton to the overall time-dependent behavior of tendons based on a single mechanical test. For this purpose, the capabilities of three different time-dependent models (a viscoelastic, a poroelastic and a poroviscoelastic) were investigated in the modeling of the experimental behavior obtained from semi-confined compression with stress relaxation tests transverse to collagen fibers. The main achieved result points out that the poroviscoelastic model was the only one capable to characterize both the experimental responses of the force and volume changes of the tissue samples.

The mass density of highly hydrated soft tissues is generally assumed to be very close to that of the water, resulting that the fluid mass fraction (water content) being equal to the fluid volume fraction. Within this context, the present study aims to investigate whether such an assumption actually holds for tendon tissues and to what extent it may affect the constitutive characterizations based on biphasic (poroelastic) models. The genome was assembled in 16 scaffolds with a length of 4,751,236 bp, a GC content of 66.5%, and 4,432 predicted genes.

We assessed fungal diversity present in glacial from the Antarctic Peninsula using DNA metabarcoding through high-throughput sequencing (HTS). We detected a total of 353,879 fungal DNA reads, representing 94 genera and 184 taxa, in glacial ice fragments obtained from seven sites in the north-west Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands. As part of the reconstruction of the Brazilian Antarctic Station on King George Island, three areas of moss carpet were transplanted to minimize the impact of the new facilities on the local biodiversity. A total of 650 m of moss carpet was transplanted to neighboring but previously uncolonized locations and has subsequently survived for the last 3 years. Antarctic moss carpets typically comprise low moss species diversity and are often monospecific.
