A search for the decay of a light Higgs boson (120-140 GeV) to a pair of weakly interacting, long-lived particles in 1.94 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s] = 7 TeV recorded in 2011 by the ATLAS detector is presented. The search strategy requires that both long-lived particles decay inside the muon spectrometer.

This Letter describes a model-independent search for the production of new resonant states in photon+jet events in 2.11 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at √s=7 TeV. We compare the photon+jet mass distribution to a background model derived from data and find consistency with the background-only hypothesis.

This Letter presents a search for pair production of heavy down-type quarks decaying via b' → Wt in the lepton + jets channel, as b'b' → W- tW+ t → bbW+ W- W+ W- → l± νbbqqqqqq. In addition to requiring exactly one lepton, large missing transverse momentum, and at least six jets, the invariant mass of nearby jet pairs is used to identify high transverse momentum W bosons. In data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.

Starch digestion involves the breakdown by α-amylase to small linear and branched malto-oligosaccharides, which are in turn hydrolyzed to glucose by the mucosal α-glucosidases, maltase-glucoamylase (MGAM) and sucrase-isomaltase (SI). MGAM and SI are anchored to the small intestinal brush-border epithelial cells, and each contains a catalytic N- and C-terminal subunit. All four subunits have α-1,4-exohydrolytic glucosidase activity, and the SI N-terminal subunit has an additional exo-debranching activity on the α-1,6-linkage.

The monoclonal antibody SYA/J6 is specific for the O-polysaccharide of the Shigella flexneri Y bacterium. Two haptens, a pentasaccharide and a mimetic octapeptide, bind to SYA/J6 with moderate binding affinities. In a previous attempt to obtain improved binding affinity to SYA/J6, two glycopeptide chimeras (α-glycopeptide and β-glycopeptide) were designed based on the structures of the pentasaccharide and the octapeptide, as well as a molecular docking study.

Enzymes involved in N-glycan processing are targets of interest in the inhibition of host processes for the blockade of dengue virus (DENV) morphogenesis. Of the ten proteins encoded by DENV, three have N-glycosylation sites, namely pre-membrane/membrane protein (prM/M), envelope protein (E) and non-structural protein-1 (NS1). It is known that aberrations in the oligosaccharide portions at these N-glycan sites affect proper folding of these proteins during the translation process that, in turn, affects the morphogenesis of the budding DENV.

The synthesis of glucosamine derivatives of the steroidal sapogenins diosgenin and hecogenin using the N-phthaloyl protected trichloroacetimidate of d-glucosamine as donor and TMSOTf as promoter is reported. The corresponding glycoconjugates were transformed into their acetamido derivatives and the hydrochloride salt (from diosgenin) and tested against HeLa, CaSki, and ViBo cervicouterine cancer cells. These compounds showed low cytotoxicity values on tumor cells and human lymphocytes, indicating that the main cell death process is presumably not necrosis.

The results of a search for pair production of the scalar partners of bottom quarks in 2.05  fb(-1) of pp collisions at sqrt[s]=7  TeV using the ATLAS experiment are reported. Scalar bottom quarks are searched for in events with large missing transverse momentum and two jets in the final state, where both jets are identified as originating from a bottom quark.

The χ(b)(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at sqrt[s] = 7  TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4  fb(-1), these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Υ(1S,2S) with Υ → μ+ μ-.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) causes a common infection in developing countries. HEV infection occurs as outbreaks, as sporadic clinical cases and as large epidemics in endemic areas. The objective of this study was to determine the presence of HEV infection in patients with clinical suspicion of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection, referred to the Instituto Nacional de Higiene "Rafael Rangel" in Venezuela.

The history of the establishment and management philosophies of the mainland Portuguese Protected Areas was reconstructed through the use of written records and oral history interviews. The objectives were to review the main philosophies in the creation and management of these areas, to assess the influence of international PA models, to compare the Portuguese case with other European and international literature concerning PAs and to discuss the value of the oral history in this research. As main results, it was found that the initial management model of "Wilderness (or Yellowstone)" was replaced by the "new paradigm" of PAs when the democracy was re-established.

Background: Young adult cancer survivors face a number of increased medical and psychosocial risks, including an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and emotional distress. Although behavioral strategies, such as exercise, may diminish some of these risks, few behavioral interventions have been developed for this population.

Purpose: As a first step toward developing interventions specifically for young survivors, we conducted a qualitative study of their intervention-related preferences.

In a cell-based assay for novel inhibitors, we have discovered that two glycosides of 5-thiomannose, each containing an interglycosidic nitrogen atom, prevented the correct zymogen processing of the prohormone proopiomelanocortinin (POMC) and the transcription factor sterol-regulatory element-binding protein-2 (SREBP-2) in mouse pituitary cells and Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells, respectively. In the case of SREBP-2, these effects were correlated with the altered N-linked glycosylation of subtilisin/kexin-like isozyme-1 (SKI-1), the protease responsible for SREBP-2 processing under sterol-limiting conditions. Further examination of the effects of these compounds in CHO cells showed that they cause extensive protein hypoglycosylation in a manner similar to type I congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDGs) since the remaining N-glycans in treated cells were complete (normal) structures.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study used a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 2.05 fb at a proton-proton collision energy of 7 TeV, but found no evidence of resonance.
  • * Limits on the production of narrow bosons were established, with 95% credibility level limits showing excluded mass ranges from 500 GeV to 1300 GeV, specifically ruling out a leptophobic topcolor boson below 880 GeV.
