Background/objectives: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women globally, and it negatively impacts diet and quality of life, increasing the risk of recurrence. Adhering to World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) and American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) lifestyle guidelines, such as healthy eating habits and nutritional status, can help in primary and secondary cancer prevention. However, no questionnaire was found for self-assessment of these guidelines for the Brazilian population.

Increasing attention has recently been paid to discrepancies between office and ambulatory blood pressure (BP) control in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), but information on mechanisms underlying circadian BP variations in CKD remains scarce. We described circadian BP patterns and their predictors in patients with CKD stages 1 to 5 referred for kidney function testing in a French tertiary hospital: 1122 ambulatory BP measurements from 635 participants. Factors associated with daytime and nighttime systolic BP (SBP) as well as with nocturnal SBP dipping (ratio of average nighttime to daytime SBP) were analyzed with linear mixed regression models.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on masked hypertension in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, where patients have normal office blood pressure (BP) but abnormal out-of-office BP readings.
  • Out of 632 analyzed patients, 67% had controlled office BP, but 56% of them displayed masked hypertension, suggesting a significant undetected risk for cardiovascular issues.
  • Key factors linked to masked hypertension include male sex, being of sub-Saharan African origin, higher BMI, and albuminuria, while higher potassium levels and the use of specific medications were associated with lower chances of masked hypertension.

Rationale & Objective: Conservative kidney management (CKM) is a viable treatment option for many patients with chronic kidney disease. However, CKM practices and resources in the United States are not well described. We undertook this study to gain a better understanding of factors influencing uptake of CKM by describing: (1) characteristics of patients who choose CKM, (2) provider practice patterns relevant to CKM, and (3) CKM resources available to providers.

is a wide-spectrum disease caused by parasites from genus. A well-modulated immune response that is established after the long-lasting clinical cure of leishmaniasis can represent a standard requirement for a vaccine. Previous studies demonstrated that causes benign disease and its antigens induce well-modulated immune responses in vitro.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a neglected disease caused by parasites. Although significant morbidity and mortality in tropical and subtropical regions of the world are associated with VL, the low investment for developing new treatment measures is chronic. Moreover, resistance and treatment failure are increasing for the main medications, but the emergence of resistance phenotypes is poorly understood at the protein level.

In American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis production of cytokines, reactive oxygen species and nitric oxide (NO) by host macrophages normally lead to parasite death. However, some strains exhibit natural NO resistance. NO-resistant strains cause more lesions and are frequently more resistant to antimonial treatment than NO-susceptible ones, suggesting that NO-resistant parasites are endowed with specific mechanisms of survival and persistence.

Background And Aims: Considering the applicability of phase angle (PhA) as a marker of muscle mass and function, we aimed to investigate whether PhA is a predictor of muscle abnormalities and function in patients with cancer.

Methods: In a sample of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC), PhA was obtained from measurements of resistance and reactance from bioelectrical impedance analysis. Computerized tomography imaging at the third lumbar vertebra was used to evaluate muscle abnormalities by quantifying skeletal muscle index (SMI) and skeletal muscle radiodensity (SMD).

Malnutrition is a risk factor for developing visceral leishmaniasis and its severe forms. Our group demonstrated that malnourished animals infected with had severe atrophies in lymphoid organs and T cell subpopulations as well as altered levels of thymic and splenic chemotactic factors, all of which resulted in dysfunctional lymphoid microenvironments that promoted parasite proliferation. Here, we hypothesize that malnutrition preceding parasite infection leads to structural and immunological changes in the gut mucosae, resulting in a failure in the immune response sensed in the intestine.
